    Catalytic production of petrochemical products from bio-alcohols

    Large-scale petrochemicals are typically produced using petroleum olefins as a feedstock. The desire to move toward a sustainable and environmentally friendly chemical industry has lead to interest in the use of bio-derived feedstocks such as alcohols which are currently being produced on an increasingly large scale by fermentation or from synthesis gas. The research investigated the direct catalytic production of ethylene, acetaldehyde, ethylene dichloride (EDC), and ethylene oxide (EO) from ethanol. Two approaches were considered: a) the use of a bi-functional catalyst that combines the dehydration capability with ethylene conversion and b) the use of a double catalytic bed system where ethanol was dehydrated over the 1st bed and the product ethylene was converted over the 2nd bed to yield the desired petrochemical product. The dehydration of ethanol was carried out over several zeolites at different operating temperatures, producing mainly ethylene and diethyl ether. The catalytic selective oxidation of ethanol was tested over silver and/or copper compounds supported on several zeolites. The effects of operating conditions, metal loading, and zeolite acidity were determined. High selectivity to acetaldehyde was achieved. Unfortunately, the direct production of EO from ethanol could not be achieved. The catalytic oxychlorination of ethanol was investigated using CuCl2 as the active compound and zeolites were used as either a support or as a pre-bed. EDC was produced via ethylene oxychlorination as well as the oxychlorination and disproportionation of ethyl chloride. The effects of operating conditions and CuCl2 loading were determined. Higher EDC yield was achieved over the dual-bed system compared to the bi-functional catalyst

    iPhone mobile devices are rapidly overtaking the new generation of mobile phones market, especially among the young generation. It is also gaining a lot of popularity among security specialists and fancy gadgets for collectors. The device is considered as a “special” mobile phone due to its ability to perform multi-operations if not multitasking. It can therefore be used as a entertainment media device, a camera, a GPS, Internet surfing via Wi-Fi technology, Internet Mobile Edge Services, personal organizer, and finally performing as a cell phone with all the usual services including sms, and so forth. However, the difference between the iPhone and the other conventional phones vendors is its ability to store and process huge volume of data which is supported by decent computing capabilities of the iPhone processor. As part of every technology, such a device can be used for legal and illegal activities. Therefore the potential risks from such “special” technology are not limited to the possibility of containing illegal materials, such as audios and visuals, including explicit materials, images, documents and the possibility of propagating malicious activities rapidly. Such modification can breach or tamper with the telecommunications network authorities and regulations. The goal of this paper is to focus on both the logical and the physical extraction of the iPhone generation one through the extraction of the iPhone flash drive NAND memory chip and also the logical extraction of data onto the second generation of iPhone using various techniques and methods at our disposal

    Power optimization for a hydrocarbon industrial plant using a genetic algorithm

    In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA) is considered for optimizing electrical power loss for a real hydrocarbon industrial plant as a single objective problem. The subject plant electrical system consists of 275 buses, two gas turbine generators, two steam turbine generators, large synchronous motors, and other rotational and static loads. The minimization of power losses (J1) objective is used to guide the optimization process, and, consequently, the injected power into the grid (PRInject) is increased. The results obtained demonstrate the potential and effectiveness of the proposed approach to optimize the power consumption. Also, in this paper a cost appraisal for the potential daily, monthly and annual cost saving will be addressed

    Technology transfer is highly regarded in business circles and it is one of the vital business strategies. Any developed country seeks to own a new technology and to be transformed from technology receiver to technology transmitter became one of the few Industrial countries to affect its economy positively. For a Technology that meant to be transferred successfully, several factors should be recognized. The essential objective of this research work is to provide the factors that can lead to a successful transfer of technology in the oil and gas sector and investigate the situation here in Qatar State by applying a survey. The result obtained from the survey analysis shows that researcher’s role that is considered to one of the most recognized factor for the success of technology transfer has not been utilized in Qatar as it should, also some factors with less Importance scale with high availability such as Administration support compared to other factor that has less availability and higher importance scale just to redirect factors funds based on importance scale and this study must be repeated on a regular base to reflect the current situation regarding the same matter

    A Cerebellar High-Grade Neuroepithelial Tumour with BCOR Alteration in a five-year-old Child: A case report.

    New groups of high-grade neuroepithelial tumours (HGNET) have emerged from the reclassification of central nervous system (CNS) embryonal tumours that have recognised CNS HGNET with BCOR alteration (CNS HGNET-BCOR). We report a two-year, nine-month-old Omani boy who presented to the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2015 with subacute head tilting and neck pain. A well-defined cerebellar lesion was found and he was treated with standard chemoradiotherapy. After a relapse at the age of five years, molecular testing revealed a BCOR alteration. He was treated with further surgery and high-dose chemotherapy; unfortunately, he relapsed and died three years after he was diagnosed

    The Impact of Simulation-Based Learning on Undergraduate Nursing Students’ Satisfaction and Self-Confidence at the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman

    Simulation-based learning has been implemented in nursing education to help students experience the real world of nursing, increase their self-confidence, and allow them to practice safely. Through simulation practice, students can be exposed to different patient care situations without waiting for opportunities to arise at their clinical placement. This study aims to explore students’ satisfaction and self-confidence as learning outcomes associated with the simulation experience through the lens of the Jeffries theoretical framework. A descriptive correlation study was conducted from October to December 2020 at the College of Nursing in Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. A convenience sample of 52 nursing students in their fourth and fifth academic year were recruited for the study. Student satisfaction and self-confidence in learning instrument was adopted from the National League for Nursing (NLN, 2006). The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 was used to analyze the data. Overall, the respondents from both academic years were satisfied with simulation practice as a learning method, and students’ self-confidence was found to improve by learning through simulation practice. No significant relationship was found between students’ satisfaction and demographic data, including age and gender. Students’ self-confidence was found to have a significant relationship with students’ age only. The results of this study indicate that simulation-based learning is an effective method in nursing education.
