    A cross sectional study to assess the prevalence of malocclusion in 08-12 years old school age children of the selected urban & rural community of Bangladesh

    Objective: To determine the prevalence of malocclusion in school-age children from a selective area of the urban and rural community of Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted among 748 children aged 08-12 years old were examined from October 2019 to September 2020 in Sylhet Sardar Upazila, Bangladesh. Angle”s classification was used for recording molar relationship with malocclusion traits. The study participants were examined by disposable dental tools (calibrated probs and mirror) including torchlight. After the collection of all data, it was compiled and analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Windows version 23. Chi-square test was used for categorical variables. P values <0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Result: The prevalence of malocclusion in urban school-age children was 237(63.4%) and in rural 213(57.0%).In urban area, the prevalence of malocclusion was 109(58.3%) in boys and 128(68.4%) in girls group. The majority (70.5%) were found Angle’s class I in urban group and 148(69.5%) in rural. One forty three (60.3%) patients were found increased overbite with malocclusion in urban group and 124(58.2%) in rural. Angle’s class-I malocclusion and Increased overbite were the most commonly occurring malocclusion. Conclusion: Prevalence of malocclusion was more in urban school age children when compared with rural. Malocclusion was significantly more in girls than boys in both urban and rural area. Angle’s class-I malocclusion and Increased overbite were the most commonly occurring malocclusion of school age children from a selected urban and rural community of Bangladesh

    Screening for cervical cancer (By VIA Test) among selected garments worker in Chattogram, Bangladesh

    Background: Bangladesh is a densely populated country of South East Asia with low resource setting where cervical cancer is the 2nd leading cause of female cancer. In more than 80% cases are diagnosed at advanced and inoperable stage. Regarding socio demographic context of this country VIA has been introduced as a screening method for cervical cancer which is most simple, cost effective, and acceptable test for all women. In Bangladesh among 3 million garment workers more than 80% are women. The objective of this study was to identify prevalence of VIA positive cases among garment workers. So that it can reduce the incidence of cervical cancer in Bangladesh. Methods: It was a cross–sectional observational study conducted in some selected garment factories in Chattogram city of Bangladesh from January 2021 to July 2021, where we enrolled 534 female workers for VIA test. Results: Among all the respondents 56% were 30 years or younger, 38% were aged between 31 to 40 years. Among 534 participants, 44.9% completed primary education, 37.3% were smoker and 34.5% had their children at early age. Majority (86.7%) had excessive whitish discharge. Post coital bleeding and irregular bleeding was 2.6% and 2.2% respectively. Considering awareness, 61.8% had idea about cervical cancer, only 1.1% had undergone VIA test in the past. In our study we found 2.4% of participants were VIA positive cases. Conclusions: It is important to include the garment workers, while making public health policies and implementation of cervical cancer control program

    Cephalometric Norms of Bangladeshi Young Children Based on McNamara’s Analysis

    Objective: To evaluate the cephalometric norms of Bangladeshi young children using McNamara’s analysis. Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out in the Department of Orthodontics, BSMMU among the dental patients visiting Dental OPD of BSMMU. The test sample was 40 Cephalometric radiographs of patients of which 20 were boys (group I) and 20 were girls (group II). The study respondents were of Bangladeshi origin, aged between 11 and 18 years at the time of cephalometric radiograph taken. A randomized sampling technique was followed to collect samples. Results: The mean cephalometric values of McNamara variables were measured and compared with the Caucasian children and Bangladeshi adults. The p values of all variables for Group I (boys) and Group II (girls) were more than 0.05 which was not significant. So it was interpreted that there was no significant difference in the values of McNamara variables between Bangladeshi boys and girls. But in comparison to Caucasian children the p-value of all the variables was significant (<0.05) except Pogonion to Nasion perpendicular. This result suggested that the McNamara variables for Bangladeshi children were significantly different from Caucasian children. Conclusion: The values observed by this study can be used in Bangladeshi children irrespective of gender because there is no statistically significant gender difference. It was also observed that the maxilla of the Bangladeshi children was slightly protrusive but the mandible was retrusive than the Caucasian children and both upper and lower incisors were found proclined

    Monitoring Movements of Ataxia Patient by Using UWB Technology

    Internet of multimedia things (IoMT) driving innovative product development in health care applications. IoMT requires delay-sensitive and higher bandwidth devices. Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is a promising solution to improve communication between devices, tracking and monitoring of patients. In the future, this technology has the capability to expand the IoMT world with new capabilities and more devices can be integrated. At the present time, some people face different types of physiological problems because of the damage in different areas of the central nervous system. Thus, they lose their balance coordination. One of these types of coordination problems is named Ataxia, in which patients are unable to control their body movements. This kind of coordination disorder needs a proper supervision system for the caretaker. Previous Ataxia assessment methods are cumbersome and cannot handle regular monitoring and tracking of patients. One of the most challenging tasks is to detect different walking abnormalities of Ataxia patients. In our paper, we present a technique for monitoring and tracking of a patient with the help of UWB technology. This method expands the real-time location systems (RTLS) in the indoor environment by placing wearable receiving tags on the body of Ataxia patients. The location and four different walking movement data are collected by UWB transceiver for the classification and prediction in the two-dimensional path. For accurate classification, we use a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to clarify the movement variations. Our proposed examined result successfully achieved and the accuracy is above 95%

    Hypertension prevalence and its trend in Bangladesh: evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Abstract Background Hypertension, itself being a major chronic condition, is one of the most significant risk factors for premature cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Hypertension is responsible for 13% of global deaths and three-quarters of the world’s hypertensive population reside in low- and middle-income countries. Bangladesh is one of those countries that experiencing an epidemiological transition from communicable to non-communicable diseases, a nutritional transition from a traditional diet to process and fast food, and an increase in a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in increased hypertension prevalence. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify existing research on hypertension prevalence in Bangladesh, summarize findings and assess its temporal change. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed and relevant references to identify studies on the prevalence of hypertension in Bangladesh. We used Random-effects meta-analysis to pool the prevalence estimates and performed subgroup analyses. We assessed heterogeneity, a trend in prevalence of hypertension and publication bias in selected studies. Results Our search initially identified 735 articles and after removing duplicates, reviewing titles and abstracts, and screening full texts, 53 studies were finally selected. The studies comprised 305,432 subjects and reported overall, gender-specific, geographical location specific and criteria specific prevalence of hypertension. We identified the range of hypertension prevalence is from 1.10% to 75.0% and the overall weighted pooled prevalence of hypertension is 20.0%. An extremely high heterogeneity (I2 = 99.53%; Cochran Q-statistic p < 0.001) was observed in the prevalence of hypertension. Consequently, we performed subgroup analysis based on gender, age group and geographical location of the study participants, the cut-off level used to define hypertension, and the types of hypertension reported and presented our findings accordingly. An overall increasing trend of hypertension prevalence is also observed. Conclusions The prevalence of hypertension is high and rising in Bangladesh. Strategies targeting prevention are required to mitigate a further increase in the prevalence and reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with it

    Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Bangladesh: a systematic review and meta-analysis of the studies

    Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of health problems that set the stage for serious health conditions and places individuals at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke. The worldwide prevalence of MS in the adult population is on the rise and Bangladesh is no exception. According to some epidemiological study, MS is highly prevalent in Bangladesh and has increased dramatically in last few decades. To provide a clear picture of the current situation, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis with an objective to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the Bangladeshi population using data already published in the scientific literature. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed and manually checked references of all identified relevant publications that described the prevalence of MS in Bangladesh. Random effects meta-analysis was used to pool the prevalence. Heterogeneity was explored using formal tests and subgroup analyses. Study quality and publication bias was also explored. Results Electronic and grey literature search retrieved 491 potentially relevant papers. After removing duplicates, reviewing titles and abstracts and screening full texts, 10 studies were finally selected. Most of the studies were conducted in rural populations and study participants were mostly females. The weighted pooled prevalence of metabolic syndrome regardless of gender and criteria used to define metabolic syndrome, was 30.0% with high heterogeneity observed. Weighted pooled prevalence of metabolic syndrome is higher in females (32%) compared to males (25%) though not statistically significant (p = 0.434). Prevalence was highest (37%) when Modified NCEP ATP III criteria was used to define MS, while it was lowest (20%) when WHO criteria was used. In most cases, geographical area (urban/rural) was identified as a source of heterogeneity between the studies. Most of the studies met study quality assessment criteria’s except adequate sample size criteria and evidence of small study effect was also detected. Conclusions The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is high and rising in Bangladesh. Strategies aimed at primary prevention are required to mitigate a further increase in the prevalence and for the reduction of the morbidity and mortality associated with metabolic syndrome
