Student Errors in Fractions and Possible Causes of These Errors
In this study, it was aimed to determine the errors and misunderstandings of 5th and 6th grade middle school students in fractions and operations with fractions. For this purpose, the case study model, which is a qualitative research design, was used in the research. In the study, maximum diversity sampling, which is a purposeful sampling method, was used. For this reason, this study was conducted in a state and a private secondary school on a voluntary basis with 105 5th graders and 84 6th graders, with a total of 189 secondary school students from different levels of achievement. In order to determine students' errors and misconceptions about fractions, two tests were prepared by researchers, ten open-ended questions for 5th graders and twelve open-ended questions for 6th graders. Before these tests were formed, the related field was scanned and the existing misunderstandings were determined. Content analysis method was used on the analyzing of the data. The answer papers of the students were coded and students’ solving were examined in three categories as correct, wrong and blank. In addition to this the solving belongs to wrong category was examined in detail and mistakes of the students were coded and the reason of these mistakes were dwelled on. It is seen from the result of the study that students have misunderstanding and mistakes about fractions. It is seen that students are not using the modellings on the operations with fractions because of that most of the mistake and misunderstandings are about operations with fractions
A Retrospective Analysis of the Burn Injury Patients Records in the Emergency Department, an Epidemiologic Study
Introduction: Burns can be very destructive, and severely endanger the health and lives of humans. It maybe cause disability and even psychological trauma in individuals. . Such an event can also lead to economic burden on victim’s families and society. The aim of our study is to evaluate epidemiology and outcome of burn patients referring to emergency department. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study was conducted by evaluation of patients’ files and forensic reports of burned patients’ referred to the emergency department (ED) of Akdeniz hospital, Turkey, 2008. Demographic data, the season, place, reason, anatomical sites, total body surface area, degrees, proceeding treatment, and admission time were recorded. Multinomial logistic regression was used to compare frequencies’ differences among single categorized variables. Stepwise logistic regression was applied to develop a predictive model for hospitalization. P<0.05 was defined as a significant level. Results: Two hundred thirty patients were enrolled (53.9% female). The mean of patients' ages was 25.3 ± 22.3 years. The most prevalence of burn were in the 0-6 age group and most of which was hot liquid scalding (71.3%). The most affected parts of the body were the left and right upper extremities. With increasing the severity of triage level (OR=2.2; 95% CI: 1.02-4.66; p=0.046), intentional burn (OR=4.7; 95% CI: 1.03-21.8; p=0.047), referring from other hospitals or clinics (OR=3.4; 95% CI: 1.7-6.6; p=0.001), and percentage of burn (OR=18.1; 95% CI: 5.42-62.6; p<0.001) were independent predictive factor for hospitalization. In addition, odds of hospitalization was lower in patients older than 15 years (OR=0.7; 95% CI: 0.5-0.91; p=0.035). Conclusion: This study revealed the most frequent burns are encountered in the age group of 0-6 years, percentage of <10%, second degree, upper extremities, indoor, and scalding from hot liquids. Increasing ESI severity, intentional burn, referring from other hospitals or clinics, and the percentage of burn were independent predictive factors for hospitalization

Diagnostic and Prognostic Value of SCUBE-1 in COVID-19 Patients
Introduction: The workload of physicians increased due to the number of patients presenting with suspicion of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) and the prolonged wait times in the emergency department during the COVID-19 pandemic. Signal peptide-CUB-EGF domain-containing protein 1 (SCUBE-1) is a protein present in platelets and endothelial cells; it is activated by inflammation from COVID-19 and may be associated with COVID-19’s known thrombotic risk. We aimed to determine whether SCUBE-1 levels are diagnostically correlated in suspected COVID-19 patients, and whether SCUBE-1 correlated with severity of disease and, therefore, might be useful to guide hospitalization/discharge decisions.
Methods: The suspected COVID-19 patients cared for at tertiary healthcare institutions for one year between May 2021–May 2022 were examined in this study. The subjects were both suspected COVID-19 patients not ultimately found to have COVID-19 and those who were diagnosed with COVID-19. By modifying the disease severity scoring systems present in COVID-19 guidelines in 2021, the COVID-19-positive patient group was classified as mild, moderate, severe, and critical, and compared using the SCUBE-1 levels. Moreover, SCUBE-1 levels were compared between the COVID-19 positive group and the COVID-19 negative group.
Results: A total of 507 patients were considered for the present study. After excluding 175 patients for incomplete data and alternate comorbid organ failure. we report on 332 patients (65.5%). Of these 332 patients, 80 (24.0%) were COVID-19 negative, and 252 (76.0%) were COVID-19 positive. Of 252 (100%) patients diagnosed with COVID-19, 74 (29.4%) were classified as mild, 95 (37.7%) moderate, 45 (17.8%) severe, and 38 (15.1%) critical. The SCUBE-1 levels were statistically different between COVID-19 positive (8.48 ± 7.42 nanograms per milliliter [ng/mL]) and COVID-19 negative (1.86 ± 0.92 ng/mL) patients (P < 0.001). In the COVID-19 positive group, SCUBE-1 levels increased with disease severity (mild = 3.20 ± 1.65 ng/mL, moderate = 4.78 ± 2.26 ng/mL, severe = 13.68 ± 3.95 ng/mL, and critical = 21.87 ± 5.39 ng/mL) (P < 0.001). The initial SCUBE-1 levels of discharged patients were significantly lower than those requiring hospitalization (discharged = 2.89 ng/mL [0.55–8.60 ng/mL]; ward admitted = 7.13 ng/mL [1.38–21.29 ng/mL], and ICU admitted = 21.19 ng/mL [10.58–37.86 ng/mL]) (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: The SCUBE-1 levels were found to be differentiated between patients with and without COVID-19 and to be correlated with the severity of illness
A nationwide multicentre study in Turkey for establishing reference intervals of haematological parameters with novel use of a panel of whole blood
IntroductionA nationwide multicentre study was conducted to establish well-defined reference intervals (RIs) of haematological parameters for the Turkish population in consideration of sources of variation in reference values (RVs). Materials and methodsK2-EDTA whole blood samples (total of 3363) were collected from 12 laboratories. Sera were also collected for measurements of iron, UIBC, TIBC, and ferritin for use in the latent abnormal values exclusion (LAVE) method. The blood samples were analysed within 2 hours in each laboratory using Cell Dyn and Ruby (Abbott), LH780 (Beckman Coulter), or XT-2000i (Sysmex). A panel of freshly prepared blood from 40 healthy volunteers was measured in common to assess any analyser-dependent bias in the measurements. The SD ratio (SDR) based on ANOVA was used to judge the need for partitioning RVs. RIs were computed by the parametric method with/without applying the LAVE method. ResultsAnalyser-dependent bias was found for basophils (Bas), MCHC, RDW and MPV from the panel test results and thus those RIs were derived for each manufacturer. RIs were determined from all volunteers’ results for WBC, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, MCV, MCH and platelets. Gender-specific RIs were required for RBC, haemoglobin, haematocrit, iron, UIBC and ferritin. Region-specific RIs were required for RBC, haemoglobin, haematocrit, UIBC, and TIBC. ConclusionsWith the novel use of a freshly prepared blood panel, manufacturer-specific RIs’ were derived for Bas, Bas%, MCHC, RDW and MPV. Regional differences in RIs were observed among the 7 regions of Turkey, which may be attributed to nutritional or environmental factors, including altitude
Inflammatory Markers in Patients Using Domiciliary Non-invasive Mechanical Ventilation: C Reactive Protein, Procalcitonin, Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio
Aim: Early identification and treatment of infections in patients using domiciliary non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) due to chronic respiratory failure (CRF) can reduce hospital admissions. We assessed C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin, and neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as indicators of infection/inflammation.Methods: The study was designed as a retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study, and was performed in 2016 in an intensive care unit outpatient clinic in patients using NIMV. Patients who came to the outpatient clinic with dyspnea, increased sputum, increased prothrombin, and who had hemogram, procalcitonin, and serum CRP, NLR, and PLT/MPV levels assessed, were enrolled into the study. Demographic characteristics, co-morbid diseases, respiratory symptoms, hemogram, biochemistry, CRP, and procalcitonin values in stable and acute attack patients were recorded from patient files. The descriptive statistics and CRP, NLR, and procalcitonin values were assessed.Results: During the study period, 49 patients (24 female) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, n = 24), obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS, n = 15), or interstitial lung disease, n = 10), and having had three inflammatory markers assessed, were included in the study. Their mean age was 67 (SD ± 12). Stable patients vs. those who had an acute attack was 41 vs. eight, and within 7 days of outpatient admission four patients were hospitalized. CRP, NLR, and PLT/MPV values were similar in patients' who had sputum purulence, and an increase in dyspnea and sputum, but procalcitonin was significantly higher in patients who had an acute attack. Procalcitonin was not correlated with CRP, NLR, and PLT/MPV.Conclusions: Patients with CRF had similar levels of CRP and NLR during a stable and acute attack state. Procalcitonin may be a better marker for therapeutic decisions in advanced chronic inflammatory diseases
Prosthetic Rehabilitation of A Child with Transfemoral Amputation Who Had Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis
Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder characterized by systemic anhidrosis, insensitivity to pain, mental retardation, osteomyelitis, and joint deformities which could result in amputations. Prosthetic rehabilitation is important in patients who had congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis associated with amputation. Soft bottom mollusc assemblages (gastropoda-bivalvia) in marine shallow waters of the western turkey coast
2296-2304The most dominant family was found to be Rissoidae with 10 species. Of the 105 species obtained stations, the most dominant species was Bittium reticulatum (26%) with 2226 specimens, followed by Mytilus galloprovincialis (11%) with 1022 specimens and Rissoa membranacea (8%) with 713 specimens, respectively. Shannon-Weaver’s Diversity Index (H'), Pielou’s Evenness Index (J’), Soyer’s Frequency Index (F), Bray-Curtis Similarity Index and Pearson's Correlation Analysis were applied to the benthic mollusc fauna. Diversity index values (between 1.71 and 4.43) and evenness index values (between 0.38 and 0.82) were determined in the area. According to Bray Curtis similarity analysis there were 3 distinct species assemblages in the area. The number of individuals, diversity index value, gastropoda and bivalvia species were also positively correlated with temperature
The Performance of Nesfatin-1 in Distinguishing Irritable Bowel Syndrome Presenting Predominantly with Diarrhea from Celiac Disease
WOS:000545455100028PubMed: 32162872Background: We hypothesized that nesfatin-1, an anti-inflammatory peptide, could be used as a non-invasive diagnostic tool in the identification of celiac disease (CD) and irritable bowel syndrome presenting predominantly with diarrhea (IBS-D). Methods: Thirty-five patients with IBS-D who met the Rome III criteria, 28 patients with celiac disease who met the diagnostic criteria of the Marsh-Oberhuber classification, and 30 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were included in this cross-sectional study. All subjects responded to the IBS Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS) questionnaire that was used to determine pain severity, pain frequency, bloating, dissatisfaction with bowel habits, and life interference. Results: Nesfatin-1 levels were significantly higher in the CD group compared to the IBS-D group and healthy controls. Nesfatin-1 was also higher in the IBS-D group compared to controls. Nesfatin-1 levels were correlated with IBS-SSS (r = 0.884, p 98.1 pg/mL for nesfatin-1 could discriminate subjects with CD from those with IBS-D and also healthy controls with a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 80%. Conclusions: The results of this study show that subjects with CD have higher nesfatin-1 levels compared to those with IBS-D or to the healthy controls. Moreover, nesfatin-1 can discriminate subjects with CD from those with IBS-D and also healthy controls, with high sensitivity and specificity. Further studies with histopathological evaluation are required to clearly address the role of nesfatin-1 in the diagnosis of CD
The effect of stress management training on perceived stress, anxiety and hopelessness levels of women with high-risk pregnancy
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of stress management training on the perceived stress, anxiety and hopelessness levels of women with high-risk pregnancy. The sample of this experimental study consisted of 206 high-risk pregnant women (intervention = 103; control = 103). Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. In the second follow-up after the training, there was a statistically significant difference amongst the Perceived Stress Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory mean scores in the intervention and control groups (p < .05). Perceived stress scores of the control group who did not receive training during discharge increased. The state and trait anxiety scores and hopelessness scores of the intervention group received training decreased compared with the control group.IMPACT STATEMENT What is already known on this subject? Mental problems such as anxiety and stress are more common in high-risk pregnancies compared with healthy pregnancies. What do the results of this study add? After the training 51.4% of women in the intervention group, 75.7% of women in the control group had stress. The state and trait anxiety and hopelessness scores of the intervention group having training decreased compared to the control group. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Health professionals should provide stress management training in high-risk pregnant women to reducing perceived stress, anxiety and hopelessness levels
A case report of sudden-onset auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder associated with Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere syndrome (riboflavin transporter deficiency)
Objective The purpose of this paper is to describe a child with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) associated with Brown-Vialetto-Van Laere (BVVL) syndrome, which is a rare, inherited, neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by defects in riboflavin transporter genes. Design We report the audiological and clinical profile of a child who presented with a complaint of sudden loss of speech understanding associated with an atypical form of ANSD. He was later diagnosed with BVVL. Study Sample An 11-year-old boy with ANSD associated with BVVL. Results The patient's severe neurological symptoms improved within a year of supplementation with high doses of riboflavin. His fluctuating hearing loss and 0% WDS remained unchanged. The patient was able to use hearing aids without any discomfort after treatment initiation, but he stopped using them again due to a lack of benefit in speech understanding. Although cochlear implantation was recommended, the patient and his family decided not to consider it for another year since they still had hope for complete recovery. Conclusions Sudden-onset ANSD can be the earliest sign of undetected BVVL syndrome. Early detection of BVVL is crucial since all symptoms can be reversible with an early intervention of high doses of riboflavin supplementation
