    VERIFICATION OF THE JCAP ROADSIDE AIR QUALITY SIMULATION MODEL

    By the reinforcement of the vehicle emission reduction requirement, NOX concentration in a roadside atmosphere reduced clearly recently. However, the ambient NO2 concentration does not show a variation. For the purpose of provision of data contributing to environmental policy making through development of high accuracy Air Quality Model and impact prediction of improved air quality, the Japan Clean Air Program had started. A commercial CFD model of Star-CD was used as the roadside air quality model. The chemical reactions of NO oxidation with ozone, photodissociation of NO2, and ozone formation are going to introduce in this model. Involving a spatial distribution of ozone concentration measurement, temporal and spatial variation of NO and NO2 was measured by the devices of chemiluminescence method which were prepared by each chemical species. Concentration-change was measured at the same time in four sites every one second to pay attention to a percentage of NO2/NOX which varied from route neighborhood to lee side way. The air flow of each sites were monitored by the ultrasonic 3D anemometer. The effect of NO2 concentration change due to the air stagnation or background ozone concentration was evaluated

    Applications of a novel biodetection system to saliva using protein fingerprints with data processing

    A fundamental method has been developed focusing on a facile and rapid examination of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an oral disease thought to affect 80% of adults, and early detection with treatment is desirable for the improvement of the quality of life. Unfortunately conventional methods are not consistent as the disease is caused by a number of bacteria and detection relies on the skills of the dentist. Thus an objective detection system is required. We have performed an experiment on saliva using a novel biodetection system, designated PepTenChip®. A disease model for saliva was prepared using a specimen from a healthy subject and a mixture of hemoglobin (f-Hb) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), which is used as a periodontal disease marker protein with healthy saliva. PepTenChip® is a peptide microarray in which fluorescent labelled structured peptides are immobilized on a novel amorphous carbon substrate. Since the peptides used as capture molecules are fluorescently labelled, labeling of analytes is not necessary. The fluorescence intensity change before and after application of analytes are detected rather than the ON/OFF detection common to conventional microarrays using a set of antigen-antibody. The fluorescence intensity value changes according to the concentration of captured protein allowing the generation of protein fingerprint (PFP) and dendrograms. The present method does not rely on a "one to one" interaction, unlike conventional biodetection, and advantages can be envisaged in the case of an undefined or unknown cause of disease. The statistical analyses, such as multivariate analyses, allow classification of the type of proteins added in saliva as mimetics of disease.     Ultrastrong tunable coupler between superconducting LC resonators

    We investigate the ultrastrong tunable coupler for coupling of superconducting resonators. Obtained coupling constant exceeds 1 GHz, and the wide range tunability is achieved both antiferromagnetics and ferromagnetics from 1086-1086 MHz to 604 MHz. The ultrastrong coupler is composed of rf-SQUID and dc-SQUID as tunable junctions, which connected to resonators via shared aluminum thin film meander lines enabling such a huge coupling constant. The spectrum of the coupler obviously shows the breaking of the rotating wave approximation, and our circuit model treating the Josephson junction as a tunable inductance reproduces the experimental results well. The ultrastrong coupler is expected to be utilized in quantum annealing circuits and/or NISQ devices with dense connections between qubits.Comment: 12pages, 7 figure

    Prevalence and risk factors for low back pain among professional cooks working in school lunch services

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The prevalence of self-reported low back pain among professional cooks was estimated to examine the effects of daily life conditions, job-related factors, and psychological factors on this disorder.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data was collected using a mailed self-administered questionnaire.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 7100 cooks, 5835 (82%) replied to the questionnaire, including 1010 men and 4825 women. The mean age was 41.4 for men and 47.5 for women. The prevalence of low back pain during a 1-month period was 72.2% among men and 74.7% among women, with no significant differences between groups. By logistic regression analyses, factors significantly associated with the prevalence of low back pain in 1 month were female gender (prevalence ratio [PR] 1.32; 95% CI, 1.03–1.68), current smoking (PR 1.57; 95% CI, 1.24–1.98), and past smoking (PR 1.35; 95% CI, 1.01–1.79). As for job-related factors, the number of cooked lunches per person (PR 1.28; 95% CI, 1.05–1.56), breaks in the morning session (PR 1.33; 95% CI, 1.13–1.56), kitchen environment (PR 1.09; 95%, CI, 1.03–1.15), and height of cooking equipment (PR 1.13; 95% CI, 1.08–1.19) were associated with the prevalence of low back pain. As for psychological factors, job satisfaction (PR 1.22; 95% CI, 1.03–1.45), stress at work (PR 1.68; 95% CI, 1.42–1.99), financial constraints (PR 1.23; 95% CI, 1.03–1.47), health-related stress (PR 1.31; 95% CI, 1.08–1.59) and worries about the future (PR 1.24; 95% CI, 1.01–1.52) were similarly associated.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Daily life conditions, job-related factors, and psychological factors are associated with the occurrence of low back pain. It is important to take comprehensive preventive measures to address a range of work and life conditions that can be improved to decrease the incidence of low back pain for professional cooks.</p

    A case of complete decapitation

    Complete decapitation due to suicide by hanging is rare. We report the case of a decapitated man who was found in the sea near an estuary. A polyethylene rope was tied to the handrail of the bridge across a strait near the site of the body. The rope was 12 mm in diameter and 19 m in length from the handrail. It ended with a slip knot noose, and skin and mustache-like hair fragments were attached to it. The decapitated head was not found. The deceased weighed 82 kg and was 152 cm long without the head. The autopsy revealed coarse abrasions and intramuscular hemorrhage around the severed edge. The third cervical spine was not fractured. We reviewed the literature and suggested the conditions of body weight, fall height, rope diameter, and number of rolls in cases of decapitation by hanging. We calculated the hanging decapitation index (HDI) as the fall height (m) multiplied by the body weight (kg), divided by the rope diameter (mm), divided by the number of rolls ; and discussed the differences between complete and incomplete decapitation cases

    The effect of G-CSF in a myocardial ischemia reperfusion model rat

    Purpose : It has been reported that G-CSF administration improves cardiac function by reducing the area of the infarct in a myocardial infarction model rat. In the present study, myocardial infarction model rats, produced by ligation of the left anterior coronary artery, were prepared. The G-CSF effect for treating cardiac muscle cell disorders by ischemia reperfusion was studied. Methods : Myocardial infarction model rats were produced by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery in 12-week-old Wistar rats. G-CSF was administered subcutaneously daily at a dose of 100 μg/kg/day for 5 days to rats with a complete ligation (MI-G group, n=6) and rats in which the ligated coronary artery was reperfused 30 minutes after the ligation (R-G group, n=6). Physiological saline was subcutaneously administered to rats with a complete ligation and reperfusion (MI-C and R-C groups, respectively, n=6 each), as controls. After 4 weeks, the infarct area ratio (%), cardiac function on echocardiography (left ventricular ejection fraction), and a myocardial histopathological diagnosis were carried out and the results compared among the groups. Results : No significant differences were found in the proportion of the residual heart muscle in the infarct lesion, myocardial wall thickness, or left ventricular ejection fraction between the MI-G and MI-C groups. In contrast, the infarct area, myocardial wall thickness, and left ventricular ejection fraction were significantly improved in the R-G group compared to the R-C group (p<0.05). Conclusions : Any inhibitory effect of G-CSF on the infarct lesion was found in the myocardial infarction reperfusion model rat, but only a small effect was found in rats with a complete ligation-induced myocardial infarction. The findings in the present study, therefore, suggest that G-CSF is effective for treating cardiac muscle cell disorders by ischemia reperfusion

    Mechanism of decrease of oral bioavailability of cyclosporin a during immunotherapy upon coadministration of amphotericin B

    金沢大学附属病院薬剤部The trough level of blood concentration of cyclosporin A (CyA) in a patient receiving immunotherapy was observed to decrease following coadministration of amphotericin B (AMB). This clinical observation was confirmed experimentally in Wistar rats intravenously given AMB (1.5 or 3.0 mg/kg) or saline (control) for 4 days, followed by CyA (10 mg/kg). The blood concentration of CyA after i.v. or p.o. administration in both AMB groups was significantly decreased compared with the control. The oral bioavailability of CyA after 1.5 or 3.0 mg/kg AMB treatment was decreased to 67% or 46%, respectively, of that of the control group. AMB treatment increased the expression levels of mdr1a and mdr1b mRNAs in the duodenum to about three times the control, and expression of CYP3A2 mRNA in the liver was increased to about twice the control. The P-gp and CYP3A2 proteins were increased significantly. These findings suggest that the oral bioavailability of CyA is reduced as a result of both increased efflux transport via P-glycoprotein in the duodenum and an increased first-pass effect of CYP3A2-mediated hepatic metabolic activity, induced by AMB. It is suggested that careful monitoring of CyA levels is necessary in the event of AMB administration to patients receiving immunotherapy with CyA. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
