Investigation of Electroweak Production of the Top Quark at the LHC

This thesis presents a study of the prospects of measuring electroweak production of the top quark at the LHC. The study of the top quark is a highly topical subject as we expect significant numbers of top quarks at the LHC which will enable us to conduct precision measurements of the properties of the top. The t-channel "single top" is a relatively rare mode of top production but with it we can probe the spin structure of the Wtb vertex in the weak interaction at an unprecedented energy scale through the measurement of the top polarisation. Analysis strategies and computing tools were developed and tested extensively. The study was performed using the signal and background events modelled with Monte Carlo generators, many of which have been newly developed for the LHC analyses. Full and fast simulation of the ATLAS detector was performed to obtain realistic estimates of the sensitivity of the measurements. A new fully fledged analysis framework, "EventView" was developed for the ATLAS collaboration to process these data at the first level of analysis. Parameterised vertex tagging was developed to estimate the level of background for this analysis and a maximum likelihood fit was used for the precise extraction of the top polarisation. In the high energy hadronic environment at the LHC, the estimation of possible systematic errors, both experimental and theoretical, needs to be carefully considered. Important elements of the systematic errors were investigated and the main contributions were evaluated.Comment: 176 page

An overview of the prospects of top quark physics at the LHC is presented. The ATLAS and the CMS detectors are about to produce a large amount of data with high top quark contents from the LHC proton-proton collisions. A wide variet y of physics analyses is planned in both experiments, and a number of useful insights have already been obtained regarding their detector performance and physics potential. This summary is based on the talk presented at the Hadron C ollider Physics Symposium 2008, Galena, Illinois, May 27-31, 2008.Comment: Invited talk at the Hadron Collider Physics Symposium (HCP2008), Galena, Illinois, USA, May 27-31, 2008; 10 pages, PDFLaTeX, 17 pdf figure

Over the past few decades, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on the communication for persons with Hard of hearing and Deaf in Japan. But little attention has been given to the take advantage of Information Technology devices to support the communication for Hard of hearing children. \ \ By the way, the present study analyses in greater detail the survey results summarized in the importance of the “Tablet-Media”. We discuss our communication assist software to express texts and images by Android application for children with Hard of hearing. In this paper, this app is analyzed using the “Capability theory” with emphasis on the power of self-expression and the right to self-determination of persons with disabilities. \ \ The results of our performance tests showed that our system was very helpful in order to provide their “Capability” for Hard of hearing children. We suggest the potential to combine our App is what we should call “Media for Capability” of communication in children with hard of hearing

On functor points of affine supergroups

To construct an affine supergroup from a Harish-Chandra pair, Gavarini [2] invented a natural method, which first constructs a group functor and then proves that it is representable. We give a simpler and more conceptual presentation of his construction in a generalized situation, using Hopf superalgebras over a superalgebra. As an application of the construction, given a closed super-subgroup of an algebraic supergroup, we describe the normalizer and the centralizer, using Harish-Chandra pairs. We also prove a tensor product decomposition theorem for Hopf superalgebras, and describe explicitly by cocycle deformation, the difference which results from the two choices of dualities found in literature

Despite the excellence in bringing about reactions, there are still many difficulties and discrepancies in the use of neotetrazolium chloride for measuring the activity of succinic dehydrogenase system of tissue homogenate. Therefore, with the purpose to find out a measuring method simpler and more accurate, the authors performed some experimets, first on the enzymic reactions of tissue homogenate and then after stopping these reactions by using various agents, tested the ease with which reduction products are extracted with various solvents, and finally compared the absorption spectra of these liquid extracts with those of the products reduced chemically by sodium hydrosulfite. As the results, the extraction of the reduction products with acetone-ether (mixed in equal proprtion v/v) after stopping the reaction with 10 per cent formalin solution was found to be the simplest and best method, and moreover, the absorption spectra of extracts of the products obtained by enzymatical or chemical reduction proved to he uniform and the both of which showed the maximum absorption at the wave length of 520 mμ. In addition, the concentrations of sodium succinate and neotetrazolium chloride, the content and kinds of tissues, pH values and concentration of phosphate buffer solutions, the duration of reaction, aerobic or anaerobic conditions, various factors either enhancing or in hibitory to reaction, were all regulated absolutely or relatively; and by drawing absorption curves of the reduction products, these enzymatic reactions were analyzed and scrutinyzed Then the authors established a method which is general, simple and accurate in measuring the enzymatic activities of a small quantity of fresh tissues in contrast with those of hist chemically stained specimens
