    Cost efficient carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastics with in-situ polymerization of polyamide

    Lightweight design has gained more and more relevance over the last decades. Especially in automotive industry it is of paramount importance to reduce weight and save fuel. At the same time the demand for safety and performance increases the components' weight. To reach a trade-off between driving comfort and efficiency new lightweight materials have to be developed. One possible solution is the usage of carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTP) as a lightweight substitute material. In contrast to conventional carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP), CFRTPs are cheaper and have a higher impact resistance. Furthermore they are characterized by hot forming ability, weldability and recyclability. However, the impregnation of the textile requires high pressure, because of the melted polymer's high viscosity. A new innovative approach for CFRTP is the usage of in-situ polymerization with is an element of-caprolactam as matrix, which has a much lower viscosity and thus requires much lower pressure for impregnation and consolidation

    Hardware and software framework for an open battery management system in safety-critical applications

    Lithium ion batteries are a common choice for many use cases, ranging from medical devices to automotive and airborne applications. Despite their widespread application, lithium ion batteries still remain an expensive, yet sensitive component within these systems. In order to maintain the operability of the battery system over its designated service life an appropriate battery management system (BMS) is required. The development of such a BMS is a challenging task, as various technological, environmental and application-specific aspects have to be considered. Especially safe and reliable operation of the battery system is an important and critical issue in this context. Besides these safety critical aspects, the BMS also includes extensive non safety related components and functions. Therefore, in order to fulfill safety-critical requirements, it is mandatory to keep the respective hardware and software components isolated. Redundancy, partitioning and the implementation of diagnostic functions at several software layers and different hardware partitions are the mechanisms for ensuring the integrity of the system. For performance and economical reasons, these techniques have to be tailored to the application. Based on a real-time operation system, a flexible and extensible strategy for a software framework with minimal code size, lean interfaces and few dependencies is introduced. The use of a dedicated BMS-Engine with a partitioned database enables the implementation of a stringent safety concept, which is discussed and demonstrated to be feasible

    The role of basic psychological needs satisfaction in the relationship between transformational leadership and innovative work behavior

    The aim of this contribution was to investigate predictors of innovative work behavior (IWB) in nonprofit organizations. For instance, in schools, innovative solutions are crucial as the quality of education and therefore the schools' competitiveness depends on their ability to keep pace with technological, economic, and societal transformations. We addressed this issue in a quantitative study with 130 teachers in Dutch secondary schools employing a time-lag design. In accordance with self-determination theory, we investigated the role of transformational leadership for enhancing IWB and the role of basic psychological needs satisfaction in mediating this relationship. By employing structural equation modeling, we found that transformational leadership was positively related to the satisfaction of the teachers' needs for autonomy and competence. Furthermore, the satisfaction of the need for competence positively predicted teachers' IWB. In addition, perceived competence fully mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and teachers' IWB. Accordingly, persons with leadership responsibilities should adopt a transformational leadership style and motivate their employees by providing individual attention, intellectual stimulation, and encouragement for goal striving. Specifically, leaders may provide feedback on employees' innovative ideas and their strategies for realizing innovative solutions, thus helping them to become increasingly confident about what they can achieve and improve concerning their contributions to innovation development. For human resource development (HRD) professionals, our findings imply that efforts toward leadership training and development (e.g., training, coaching, and mentoring) should incorporate knowledge and practical experiences about transformational leadership as well as its role for employees' IWB and their contributions to organizational and professional development
