    Diamond-Gardner Syndrome: Autoerythrocyte Sensitization Syndrome

    Get PDF
Diamond-Gardner syndrome (DGS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by painful ecchymoses that develop following emotional stress or trauma. The lesions are observed mostly in the extremities and these lesions are the result of autosensitization to extravasated erythrocytes after trauma. The majority of the patients diagnosed with this disease are composed of young women. In this case report, a teenager who had complaints of recurring painful ecchymoses with no related personal or familial background and later-diagnosed with DGS is presented. Although it is seen less commonly, DGS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous lesions and haemorrhages of the childhood period, especially in adolescence

We read with great interest the paper on ‘A report of Hb Fontainebleau [?21 (B2) Ala > Pro] as a result of founder effect Phenomenon’ that appeared in a recent issue of the journal with great interest by Jalalia et al. However, although they discussed extensively the data on the very rare hemoglobin variant Fontainebleau (a 21(B2) Ala-Pro), they did not mention the existence of this variant in Turkish population

Introduction: We investigated the use of Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) which can be calculated by using platelet and lymphocyte counts from total blood count, for the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis (IM). Materials and methods: Out of 116 patients, 24 of them were diagnosed as IM with regard to serological tests and accepted as patient group. 40 healthy subjects were taken as control group. PLR values of the patient and control groups were calculated and cutoff values were determined using ROC Curve analysis. Results: According to the study data, sensitivity and specificity of PLR value in diagnosing IM is 50% and 95%, respectively. Conclusion: We concluded that low values of PLR can be used to give an idea about the existence of IM. However, high values of PLR may necessitate more evaluation for other differential diagnosis

Objective: The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyse the data of patients with significant bacteriuria pre-diagnosed as urinary tract infection (UTI) and to compare the results with the current literature. Methods: A total of 2842 women, men, children, inpatients or outpatients with significant bacteriuria who were pre-diagnosed as UTI in TOBB University of Economics and Technology Faculty of Medicine Hospital between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017 were included in this study and the data of these patients were analysed retrospectively. Results: Of the patients with significant bacteriuria, 83.5% were female. Escherichia coli was isolated from urine cultures most frequently both in outpatient and inpatient groups regardless of gender. When bacterial growth was evaluated according to the clinics admitted, E. coli was found to be the most common with a ratio of 74.3%. In all age groups, E. coli was the first and Klebsiella spp. were the second most frequent bacteria. Conclusions: In this study, the most commonly isolated agent was found to be E. coli as indicated in the literature regardless of other parameters investigated. Besides, it was observed that ratio of patients from whom E. coli was isolated increased within the years. © 2019, AVES. All rights reserved
