    Efficacy of Assertiveness Training in Enhancing Interpersonal Skills among Selected Nurses Attending MCPDP at Osun State School of Nursing, Osogbo: Osun State, Nigeria

    Introduction: Assertiveness is an important behaviour for today’s professional nurse. As nurses move away from traditional subservient roles and perceived stereotypes, it is increasingly being recognized that a nurse needs to behave in an assertive way. The study investigated the influence of Assertiveness Training in enhancing interpersonal skills among selected nurses attending mandatory continuing professional development programme (MCPDP).Methodology: - The sample consisted of one hundred and twenty nurses randomly selected, from the clustered population of nurses attending MCPDP in Osun State, Nigeria. A. 3 x 2 factorial design was adopted. The analysis of covariance was used to test two null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance using SPSS version window 17.Results: - Results indicated that subjects exposed to treatments performed significantly better than the control group on the measures of interpersonal skills i.e. Assertiveness Behaviour inventory; social skill inventory, F (15,304) =  103.41, P<0.0. Conclusion: - It was concluded that the therapeutic technique was effective in enhancing interpersonal skills of the subjects.     Impact of Assertiveness Training on Improving the Coping Skills of Selected Nurses in a Nigeria Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital

    Background: Psychiatric mental health nurses are confronted with daily responsibility of interacting with patients with stress. They need to understand the meaning of their own stress before they could use the strategies to assist the patients with stress under their care. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluate the impact of assertiveness training on coping skills of selected nurses working in Yaba, psychiatric hospital, Lagos. Methodology: The study setting was the psychiatric hospital, Yaba, Lagos. It was among psychiatric nurses with the study population of 60 (2 did not complete the training) therefore the sample size was 58,data were collected using standardized tests of coping skill inventory, Assertiveness inventory and viginettes. Results: The result showed that a significant change was found in level of assertiveness responses and coping responses of the subjects before and after the training.Conclusion: It was concluded that assertiveness training impacted significantly on coping level of the subjects. It was revealed that the assertiveness training helped nurses to communicate and be more tolerant to their patients in different situations.     Differential efficacy of two psychosocial therapies in the treatment of psychopathology associated with epilepsy among selected patients at federal medical centre, Owo, Nigeria

    Introduction:Epilepsy is a common medical and social disorder or group of disorders with unique characteristics. It has been postulated that there is a relationship between behavioural, physiological and psychological states and probability of seizure occurrence. Therefore, this study examined the efficacy of Rational Emotive Therapy and cognitive restructuring on the reduction of psychopathology associated with Epilepsy. Methodology: A 3 x 2 factorial experimental design was adopted in testing two (2) null hypotheses. Ninety (90) Epileptic patients were randomly selected and administered with the therapeutic packages for a period of 7weeks. The respondents were divided into 2 experimental and one control groups. Washington Psychosocial seizure inventory (WPSI) was the only instrument used. Result:Results indicated that subjects exposed to treatment performed significantly better than control group on the reduction of Psychopathology associated with Epilepsy. The two treatment strategies were equally effective in fostering the reduction of Psychopathology associated with epilepsy. Female subjects in the two treatment condition excelled better than their male counterparts on the reduction of psychopathology of Epilepsy. Conclusion: It was concluded that mental health/psychiatrics nurses should always remember to accompany the use of drugs with psychotherapy so that the patient will be aware of psychopathology associated with the illness. This will prevent them from developing serious psychopathology

    Effectiveness of a nurse-led cognitive behavioural therapy intervention in the management of substance abuse amongst selected secondary school students in Ejigbo local government area, Osun state, Nigeria

    Background: The world today is witnessing an upsurge of issues that are of global dimension, one of which substance abuse is one. Drug abuse which include alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and heroine has turned many families apart and destroyed lives, corrupted the societal value and prevented many youth from fulfilling their hopes and aspirations.Therefore, the study is to examine the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy intervention in the management of substance abuse among selected secondary students. Methodology: The universe of study consisted of 232 subjects out of which only 129 that were selected randomly completed the programme, it consisted of 70 males and 58 females selected from secondary schools in Ejigbo Local government area through multistage sampling technique. Simple randomization was used in selecting four secondary schools and respondents were selected randomly from the registers of the school selected. The study adopted a quasi- experimental, non- equivalent control group pretest/post-test design with the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Intervention as the therapeutic package and an instrument tagged Cognitive Behavioural Intervention Scale (CBIS) consisting of 53 items was used. Data were analyzed using means test and analysis of covariance (ANOVA). Results: Findings revealed that cognitive behavioural therapy significantly affects substance abuse cessation among the subjects. The therapeutic intervention was of greater efficacy along the gender lines. Conclusion: It was concluded that Psychiatric Nurses should endeavor to accompany the medical regimen with cognitive behavioural therapy in the management of substance abuse to prevent relapse. It was recommended that educational authorities should employ the services of clinical psychologists
