    NIGERIA’S ENERGY CHALLENGE AND POWER DEVELOPMENT: THE WAY FORWARD

    The ever increasing demand and meager supply of energy in Nigeria has been a great challenge to her development. This situation is becoming critical, with increasing population not balanced by an adequate energy development programme. The incessant power generation failure has grossly affected the economy, seriously slowing down development in rural and sub-rural settlements, with present energy policy mainly benefiting urban dwellers. Globally, energy projections stipulate that between 2002 and 2025, global energy needs may rise by over 34%, with that of developing nations doubling this percentage. A robust solution must be found to end the nation’s energy crises. This Viewpoint compares the energy potential of Nigeria with the challenges faced. Nigeria receives a huge amount of solar radiation, has abundant wind energy resources, and large deposits of fossil fuel, as well as enormous hydro-power resources from Niger and Benue Rivers. However, of these about 80% of hydro-power remains untapped, the total 5.5KW-hr/m2/day of solar radiation is not utilized and wind energy resources remain unexploited. The solution lies in creating a mixed supply of energy in which as yet untapped renewable resources are combined with abundant nonrenewable fossil fuel, including the massive quantities of gas wasted from crude oil exploitation

    Heavy Metal Analysis of Industrial Discharges in Lagos, Nigeria

    Waste water samples from three different industrial areas in Lagos state (Ikeja, Apapa and Victoria Island) spanning the dry and wet seasons, were analyzed for Pb, Cu, Cd, Mn and Fe using the atomic absorption spectroscopic method. The mean values of Fe were within the FMEnV and WHO limits used as standard while the mean values of Cd, Cu, Pb and Mn exceeded these limits indicating that these industries constitute source of pollution to the human lives and ecosystem in the areas involved. Utilization of improved method of treatment and frequent awareness to the compliance of the industries were recommended

    The use of Donryu rats as a model for the humans in the formulation of dietary protein

    The effects of brewery spent grain formulated diet on the performance of Donryu rats were investigated. The rats were allocated into 6 dietary treatment groups of 6 rats each and fed with diet containing graded levels of BSG 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 100%. The experimental feeding lasted for fifteen days. The BSG formulated diet was found to have a positive effect on the growth performance of the rats up to levels of 12% including the control(0%). The histopathological evaluation shows that 3–9% BSG could be used as protein supplement in human foods

    The concentartions of some heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Pb) in soil samples at a battery-manufacturing company were determined bt atomic absorption spectrometry. It was found taht the toxicity level of Zn, Cu and Ni was not exceede while the concentrations of Cd and Pb were beyond the critical range above which toxicity can be said to occur. The Cd content had a mean of 15.7 ug/g which is above the critical range of 3 to 8 ug/g. The Pb content had a mean of 36242.6 ug/g as compared to the critical range of 100 to 400 ug/g in soil

    Environment Induced Failure of Mild Steel in 2 M Sulphuric Acid Using Chromolaena odorata

    Failure investigation of mild steel sample in 2 M sulphuric acid solution in the presence of Chromolaena odorata extract was conducted using the gasometric method. Mild steel coupons, each measuring 4 cm by 1.5 cm were completely immersed in test solutions of free acid and also those containing extract quantities of 60, 100 and 140 cm3 at a temperature of 333K for 60 minutes. The volumes of hydrogen gas evolved from the experiment were recorded and analyzed. The result showed that maximum inhibitor efficiency which has a relationship with lowest corrosion rate was obtained at the highest inhibitor concentration of 140 cm3, with reduction in the corrosion rate observed to follow in order of increasing extract volume. Temkin isotherm best described the metal surface interaction adsorption mechanism. Once concentration of the acid is known, an expression for estimating corrosion rate values in the presence of the extract was obtained. Also, the photomicrograph study showed a direct relationship between the extract quantity and the extent of corrosion. Sample immersed in the 140 cm3 extract quantity showed no trace of the third phase but rather the presence of a finely distributed pearlite phase indicating that increased inhibitor concentration led to a reduction in the deterioration of the metal

    PROCESSING OF TRIGLYCERIDES TO DIESEL RANGE HYDROCARBON FUELS: EASILY PRACTICABLE SMALL SCALE APPROACH

    Lipid fraction of biomass has been identified as carbon neutral substitution to fuels from fossil sources in the transportation sector. Although, the diesel engine, invented by Rudolph Diesel over a century ago first ran on peanut oil, the current combustion engines are designed to run on hydrocarbon fuels derived from petroleum. Therefore, a substitute for diesel fuel from renewable source will need to have identical or closely similar properties. The most popular of the existing technology for processing vegetable or animal oils is based on the conversion of the triglycerides constituents to fatty acids methyl esters (FAME). FAME technology does not produce diesel fuel with identical properties as petro-diesel. Other alternative processing routes are dilution of the vegetable oils, emulsification, pyrolysis and hydrotreating. These routes are discussed in this paper. Appropriate technologies for small scale production of diesel range hydrocarbon fuel from vegetable oil without the need for co-reactants such methanol or hydrogen as part of the feedstock is emphased. Also alternative catalyst systems in place of the expensive precious metal supported catalysts are suggested

    Functional and Nutritive Properties of Spent Grain Enhanced Cookies

    The generation of large tonnages of spent grains as byproduct has become major disposal problem in brewing industry. This necessitate sourcing utilization alternatives to complement present use as animal feeds. The incorporation of this brewery spent grain, BSG, into cookie formulations to 15% maximum levels and its effects on the nutritional and functional properties of cookies was investigated. About 6.14% dried and 610 μm milled BSG were added to cookie formulation mix at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15% levels. Other recipes added include: wheat flour, salt, sodium carbonate, water, non-fatty milk and additives. The trace metal content of the blended products were also compared with local and imported cookies. The results obtained indicated free fatty acid, moisture content, extracted fat and sensory evaluation of the final cookies were limited to 6% optimum inclusion while the spread ratio analysis suggested 3% BSG usage. The undesirable flavor of BSG as additives influenced the taste of the cookies to a great extent and did not change the nutritional status of the samples from 6% BSG inclusion. The trace metals statistical analysis of the BSG supplemented cookies compared well with both locally baked and imported cookies (p≤0.05). However, addition of brewery spent grains significantly increased the nutritional properties of the cookies up to 6% level of BSG addition

    The adsorption of [(4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-oxo-2H-pyran-3-yl)-(4-methoxy-phenyl)- methyl]-urea on iron in phosphoric media was studied by using electrochemical technique. The adsorption mechanism was investigated using adsorption isotherms. The experimental data fit localized adsorption models. The values for free energy of adsorption, o DGads , were also calculated at each surface coverage, �, of the studied compound by applying the mathematical model of Bockris – Swinkels adsorption isotherm. The variation of free energy of adsorption o ads DG with surface coverage, �, was interpreted in terms of deviation from ideal condition assumed in Langmuir model. A possible adsorption model of HPU2 molecules on to the metal surface was suggested
