    Surface functionalization of vertical graphene significantly enhances the energy storage capability for symmetric supercapacitors

    Vertical graphene (VG) sheets, which consist of few-layer graphene vertically aligned on the substrate with three dimensionally interconnected porous network, make them become one of the most promising energy storage electrodes, especially for SCs. Nevertheless, the intrinsic hydrophobic nature of pristine VG sheets severely limited its application in aqueous SCs. Here, electrochemical oxidation strategy is adopted to increase the hydrophilicity of VG sheets by introducing oxygen functional groups so that the aqueous electrolyte can fully be in contact with the VG sheets to improve charge storage performance. Our work demonstrated that the introduction of oxygen functional groups not only greatly improved the hydrophilicity but also generated a pseudo capacitance to increase the specific capacitance. The resulting capacitance of electrochemically oxidized VG for 7 min (denoted as EOVG-7) exhibited three orders of magnitude higher (1605 mF/cm²) compared to pristine VG sheets. Through assembled two EOVG-7 electrodes, a symmetric supercapacitor demonstrated high specific capacitance of 307.5 mF/cm², high energy density of 138.3 μWh/cm2 as well as excellent cyclic stability (84% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles).     Effect of Sodium Trimetaphosphate on Chitosan-Methylcellulose Composite Films: Physicochemical Properties and Food Packaging Application

    Environmentally friendly food packaging currently attracts much interest. Sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) finds specialized applications in food, but it is rarely used as a crosslinking agent. In this study, STMP was used as a crosslinking agent to prepare chitosan/methylcellulose composite films. Both antibacterial and physicochemical properties of the composite film were improved by crosslinking with STMP. The crosslinked films, with good antibacterial activity (~99%), had increased tensile strength, a higher elongation at break, a lower swelling ratio and solubility, and a lower enzymatic degradation than the non-crosslinked films. Furthermore, the crosslinked films showed an excellent preservative effect on fresh-cut wax gourd after three days at room temperature. The obtained films crosslinked by STMP can be potentially applied to the food industry, such as food functional packaging, providing a novel alternative to traditional plastic packages

    A simple method to extract DNA from hair shafts using enzymatic laundry powder.

    A simple method to extract DNA from hair shafts was developed by using enzymatic laundry powder at the first step of the process. The whole extraction can be finished in less than 2 hours. The simple extraction reagent proposed here contains only two cheap components: ordinary enzymatic laundry powder and PCR buffer. After extraction, an ultra sensitive fluorescent nucleic acid stain, PicoGreen, was used for quantifying trace amount of double-stranded DNA in the solution extracted. For further validation of DNA extraction, four primers were employed to amplify DNA microsatellite loci. Both fluorescence spectroscopy and PCR results suggested that this method can extract DNA from hair shafts with good efficiency and repeatability. The study will greatly facilitate the use of hair shafts in future for DNA analyses on genome-wide scale

Taking 0 degree and 100 degree which can be easily obtained in the nature as the reference standard temperature, the deviation of the testing thermocouples and the reference standard temperature can be determined and the qualification rate of the thermocouples can be obtained. This method can promote the quality control of the laboratory

    A simple and sensitive approach for ochratoxin A detection using a label-free fluorescent aptasensor.

    Ochratoxin A(OTA) is found to be one of the predominant contaminating mycotoxins in a wide variety of food commodities. To avoid the risk of OTA consumption, the detection and quantitation of OTA level are of great significance. Based on the fact that ssDNA aptamer has the ability to form a double-strand structure with its complementary sequence, a simple and rapid aptamer-based label-free approach for highly sensitive and selective fluorescence detection of OTA was developed by using ultra-sensitive double-strand DNA specific dyes PicoGreen. The results showed that as low as 1 ng/mL of OTA could be detected with a dynamic range of more than 5 orders of magnitude which satisfies the requirements for OTA maximum residue limit in various food regulated by European Commission. With the specificity of aptamer, the assay exhibited high selectivity for OTA against two other analogues (N-acetyl-l-phenylalanine and zearalenone). We also tested the aptasensor practicability using real sample of 1% beer spiked with a series of concentration of OTA and the results show good tolerance to matrix effect. All detections could be achieved in less than 30 min, which provides a simple, quick and sensitive detection method for OTA screening in food safety and could be easily extend to other small molecular chemical compounds detection which aptamer has been selected

    Influencing electroclinical features and prognostic factors in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis: a cohort follow-up study in Chinese patients

    Abstract The clinical manifestations of patients with anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis in East China and factors associated with prognosis were analyzed. A retrospective study of 106 patients (58 females; 48 males) with anti-NMDAR encephalitis in East China was carried out from June 2015 to February 2019. Clinical features and factors influencing outcomes were reviewed. Behavioral changes were observed in 74.5% (79/106) of patients, and comprised the initial symptoms in 61.3% (65/106). Seizures were observed in 67% (71/106) of patients, and served as initial symptoms in 31.1% (33/106). A total of 54.9% (39/71) of seizures were focal seizures. More clinical symptoms were observed in female patients than in male patients (P = 0.000). Similarly, background activity (BA) with high cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) antibody titers at the peak stage was more severe in female patients than in male patients (P = 0.000). The Binary logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses revealed the factors associated with poor outcomes included consciousness disturbance (OR 4.907, 95% CI 1.653–14.562, P = 0.004; area: 65.4%, sensitivity: 44.2%, specificity: 86.5%, P = 0.014), EEG BA (OR 3.743, 95% CI 1.766–7.932, P = 0.001; area: 76.6%, sensitivity: 73%, specificity: 75%, P = 0.000), number of symptoms (OR 2.911, 95% CI 1.811–4.679, P = 0.000; area: 77.1%, sensitivity: 59.5%, specificity: 78.6%, P = 0.000) and CSF antibody titer (OR 31.778, 95% CI 8.891–113.57, P = 0.000; area: 83.9%, sensitivity: 89.2%, specificity: 78.6%, P = 0.000). EEG BA and number of symptoms were associated with CSF antibody titers. Consciousness disturbances, EEG BA, number of symptoms and CSF antibody titers served as predictors of poor outcomes

    Structural Abnormalities in Childhood Absence Epilepsy: Voxel-Based Analysis Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging

    Purpose: Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) is a common syndrome of idiopathic generalized epilepsy. However, little is known about the brain structural changes in this type of epilepsy, especially in the default mode network (DMN) regions. This study aims at using the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) technique to quantify structural abnormalities of DMN nodes in CAE patients. Method: DTI data were acquired in 14 CAE patients (aged 8.64±2.59 years, 7 females and 7 males) and 16 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The data were analyzed using voxel-based analysis (VBA) and statistically compared between patients and controls. Pearson correlation was explored between altered DTI metrics and clinical parameters. The difference of brain volumes between patients and controls were also tested using unpaired t-test. Results: Patients showed significant increase of mean diffusivity (MD) and radial diffusivity (RD) in left medial prefrontal cortex, and decrease of fractional anisotropy (FA) in left precuneus and axial diffusivity (AD) in both left medial prefrontal cortex and precuneus. In correlation analysis, MD value from left medial prefrontal cortex was positively associated with duration of epilepsy. Neither the disease duration nor the seizure frequency showed significant correlation with FA values. Between-group comparison of brain volumes got no significant difference. Conclusion: The findings indicate that structural impairments exist in DMN regions in children suffering from absence epilepsy and MD values positively correlate with epilepsy duration. This may contribute to understanding the pathological mechanisms of chronic neurological deficits and promote the development of new therapies for this disorder

    Fstl1 Promotes Glioma Growth Through the BMP4/Smad1/5/8 Signaling Pathway

    Background: Gliomas result in the highest morbidity and mortality rates of intracranial primary central nervous system tumors because of their aggressive growth characteristics and high postoperative recurrence. They are characterized by genetic instability, intratumoral histopathological variability and unpredictable clinical behavior in patients. Proliferation is a key aspect of the clinical progression of malignant gliomas, complicating complete surgical resection and enabling tumor regrowth and further proliferation of the surviving tumor cells. Methods: The expression of Fstl1 was detected by western blotting and qRT-PCR. We used cell proliferation and colony formation assays to measure proliferation. Then, flow cytometry was used to analyze cell cycle progression. The expression of Fstl1, p-Smad1/5/8 and p21 in GBM tissue sections was evaluated using immunohistochemical staining. Furthermore, we used coimmunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and immunoprecipitation to validate the relationship between Fstl1, BMP4 and BMPR2. Finally, we used orthotopic xenograft studies to measure the growth of tumors in vivo. Results: We found that follistatin-like 1 (Fstl1) was upregulated in high-grade glioma specimens and that its levels correlated with poor prognosis. Fstl1 upregulation increased cell proliferation, colony formation and cell cycle progression, while its knockdown inhibited these processes. Moreover, Fstl1 interacted with bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) 4, but not BMP receptor (BMPR) 2, and competitively inhibited their association. Furthermore, Fstl1 overexpression suppressed the activation of the BMP4/Smad1/5/8 signaling pathway, while BMP4 overexpression reversed this effect. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that Fstl1 promoted glioma growth through the BMP4/Smad1/5/8 signaling pathway, and these findings suggest potential new glioblastoma treatment strategies
