Sensitive Chemical Compass Assisted by Quantum Criticality
The radical-pair-based chemical reaction could be used by birds for the
navigation via the geomagnetic direction. An inherent physical mechanism is
that the quantum coherent transition from a singlet state to triplet states of
the radical pair could response to the weak magnetic field and be sensitive to
the direction of such a field and then results in different photopigments in
the avian eyes to be sensed. Here, we propose a quantum bionic setup for the
ultra-sensitive probe of a weak magnetic field based on the quantum phase
transition of the environments of the two electrons in the radical pair. We
prove that the yield of the chemical products via the recombination from the
singlet state is determined by the Loschmidt echo of the environments with
interacting nuclear spins. Thus quantum criticality of environments could
enhance the sensitivity of the detection of the weak magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
On the Stability and Structural Dynamics of Metal Nanowires
This article presents a brief review of the nanoscale free-electron model,
which provides a continuum description of metal nanostructures. It is argued
that surface and quantum-size effects are the two dominant factors in the
energetics of metal nanowires, and that much of the phenomenology of nanowire
stability and structural dynamics can be understood based on the interplay of
these two competing factors. A linear stability analysis reveals that metal
nanocylinders with certain magic conductance values G=1, 3, 6, 12, 17, 23, 34,
42, 51, 67, 78, 96, ... times the conductance quantum are exceptionally stable.
A nonlinear dynamical simulation of nanowire structural evolution reveals a
universal equilibrium shape consisting of a magic cylinder suspended between
unduloidal contacts. The lifetimes of these metastable structures are also
computed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
FFT-LB modeling of thermal liquid-vapor systems
We further develop a thermal LB model for multiphase flows. In the improved
model, we propose to use the FFT scheme to calculate both the convection term
and external force term. The usage of FFT scheme is detailed and analyzed. By
using the FFT algorithm spatiotemporal discretization errors are decreased
dramatically and the conservation of total energy is much better preserved. A
direct consequence of the improvement is that the unphysical spurious
velocities at the interfacial regions can be damped to neglectable scale.
Together with the better conservation of total energy, the more accurate flow
velocities lead to the more accurate temperature field which determines the
dynamical and final states of the system. With the new model, the phase diagram
of the liquid-vapor system obtained from simulation is more consistent with
that from theoretical calculation. Very sharp interfaces can be achieved. The
accuracy of simulation results are also verified by the Laplace law. The FFT
scheme can be easily applied to other models for multiphase flows.Comment: 34 pages, 21 figure
Using Megamaser Disks to Probe Black Hole Accretion
We examine the alignment between H_2O megamaser disks on sub-pc scales with
circumnuclear disks and bars on <500 pc scales observed with HST/WFC3. The HST
imaging reveals young stars, indicating the presence of gas. The megamaser
disks are not well aligned with the circumnuclear bars or disks as traced by
stars in the HST images. We speculate on the implications of the observed
misalignments for fueling supermassive black holes in gas-rich spiral galaxies.
In contrast, we find a strong preference for the rotation axes of the megamaser
disks to align with radio continuum jets observed on >50 pc scales, in those
galaxies for which radio continuum detections are available. Sub-arcsecond
observations of molecular gas with ALMA will enable a more complete
understanding of the interplay between circumnuclear structures.Comment: Error in Figure 4 corrected, references added. 7 pages, 4 figures, to

Integrative analyses of transcriptome sequencing identify novel functional lncRNAs in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a critical role in cancer initiation and progression, and thus may mediate oncogenic or tumor suppressing effects, as well as be a new class of cancer therapeutic targets. We performed high-throughput sequencing of RNA (RNA-seq) to investigate the expression level of lncRNAs and protein-coding genes in 30 esophageal samples, comprised of 15 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) samples and their 15 paired non-tumor tissues. We further developed an integrative bioinformatics method, denoted URW-LPE, to identify key functional lncRNAs that regulate expression of downstream protein-coding genes in ESCC. A number of known onco-lncRNA and many putative novel ones were effectively identified by URW-LPE. Importantly, we identified lncRNA625 as a novel regulator of ESCC cell proliferation, invasion and migration. ESCC patients with high lncRNA625 expression had significantly shorter survival time than those with low expression. LncRNA625 also showed specific prognostic value for patients with metastatic ESCC. Finally, we identified E1A-binding protein p300 (EP300) as a downstream executor of lncRNA625-induced transcriptional responses. These findings establish a catalog of novel cancer-associated functional lncRNAs, which will promote our understanding of lncRNA-mediated regulation in this malignancy
Deep motion tracking from multiview angiographic image sequences for synchronization of cardiac phases
In the diagnosis and interventional treatment of coronary artery disease, the 3D+time reconstruction of the coronary artery on the basis of x-ray angiographic image sequences can provide dynamic structural information. The synchronization of cardiac phases in the sequences is
essential for minimizing the influence of cardiorespiratory motion and realizing precise 3D+time reconstruction. Key points are initially extracted from the first image of a sequence. Matching grid points between consecutive images in the sequence are extracted by a multi-layer matching strategy. Then deep motion tracking (DMT) of key points is achieved by local deformation based on the neighboring grid points of key points. The local deformation is optimized by the Random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm. Then, a simple harmonic motion (SHM) model is utilized to distinguish cardiac motion from other motion sources (e.g. respiratory, patient movement, etc). Next, the signal which is composed of cardiac motions is filtered by a band-pass filter to reconstruct the cardiac phases. Finally, the synchronization of cardiac phases from different imaging angles is realized by a piece-wise linear transformation. The proposed method was evaluated using clinical x-ray angiographic image sequences from 13 patients. 85% matching points can be accurately computed by the DMT method. The mean peak temporal distance (MPTD) between the reconstructed cardiac phases and the electrocardiograph signal is 0.027 s. The correlation between the cardiac phases of the same patient is over 89%. Compared with three other state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method accurately reconstructs and synchronizes the cardiac phases from different sequences of the same patient. The proposed DMT method is robust and highly effective in synchronizing cardiac phases of angiographic image sequences captured from different imaging angles
Creation of Entanglement between Two Electron Spins Induced by Many Spin Ensemble Excitations
We theoretically explore the possibility of creating spin entanglement by
simultaneously coupling two electronic spins to a nuclear ensemble. By
microscopically modeling the spin ensemble with a single mode boson field, we
use the time-dependent Fr\"{o}hlich transformation (TDFT) method developed most
recently [Yong Li, C. Bruder, and C. P. Sun, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{75}, 032302
(2007)] to calculate the effective coupling between the two spins. Our
investigation shows that the total system realizes a solid state based
architecture for cavity QED. Exchanging such kind effective boson in a virtual
process can result in an effective interaction between two spins. It is
discovered that a maximum entangled state can be obtained when the velocity of
the electrons matches the initial distance between them in a suitable way.
Moreover, we also study how the number of collective excitations influences the
entanglement. It is shown that the larger the number of excitation is, the less
the two spins entangle each other.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
A Combination of Recombinant Mycobacterium bovis BCG Strains Expressing Pneumococcal Proteins Induces Cellular and Humoral Immune Responses and Protects against Pneumococcal Colonization and Sepsis.
Pneumococcal diseases remain a substantial cause of mortality in young children in developing countries. The development of potentially serotype-transcending vaccines has been extensively studied; ideally, such a vaccine should include antigens that are able to induce protection against colonization (likely mediated by interleukin-17A [IL-17A]) and invasive disease (likely mediated by antibody). The use of strong adjuvants or alternative delivery systems that are able to improve the immunological response of recombinant proteins has been proposed but poses potential safety and practical concerns in children. We have previously constructed a recombinant Mycobacterium bovis BCG strain expressing a pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA)-PdT fusion protein (rBCG PspA-PdT) that was able to induce an effective immune response and protection against sepsis in a prime-boost strategy. Here, we constructed two new rBCG strains expressing the pneumococcal proteins SP 0148 and SP 2108, which confer IL-17A-dependent protection against pneumococcal colonization in mouse models. Immunization of mice with rBCG 0148 or rBCG 2108 in a prime-boost strategy induced IL-17A and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) production. The combination of these rBCG strains with rBCG PspA-PdT (rBCG Mix), followed by a booster dose of the combined recombinant proteins (rMix) induced an IL-17A response against SP 0148 and SP 2108 and a humoral response characterized by increased levels of IgG2c against PspA and functional antibodies against pneumolysin. Furthermore, immunization with the rBCG Mix prime/rMix booster (rBCG Mix/rMix) provides protection against pneumococcal colonization and sepsis. These results suggest the use of combined rBCG strains as a potentially serotype-transcending pneumococcal vaccine in a prime-boost strategy, which could provide protection against pneumococcal colonization and sepsis
