Managing Resources by Grazing in Grasslands Dominated by Dominant Shrub Species
The European natural grasslands are attracting new attention because of their environmental value as habitats for threatened fauna and flora species and their contribution to the diversity of landscapes. Those responsible for the implementation of the European agri-environmental policy are hence encouraging livestock farmers to adopt grazing practices that contribute to the conservation of grassland biodiversity especially by limiting encroachment by dominant shrubs. However, current scientific knowledge and technical information are often insufficient to connect flock feeding and the impact of grazing on shrub dynamics and livestock farmers are not very enthusiastic about restoring or conserving “plant mosaics” including shrubs that support biodiversity in their fields. This paper presents results of an interdisciplinary study on interactions between small ruminant feeding strategy and population dynamics of dominant shrub species with the objective of managing by grazing the structure of plant community and thus to provide the renewal of resources on a multi-year scale

National audienceThis is a synthetical and critical presentation of the papers of the session n°5 of the European Grassland Congress (La Rochelle, 27-30 May 2002). This session was devoted to the handling and discussion of the questions linked to the multi-functionality of grasslands. The speakers of the plenary session (a sociologist, a phyto-ecologist and an ecologist) proposed strategies reaching from the maintenance of the traditional agricultural practices to the adoption of policies aiming at the creation or the preservation of a large bio-diversity on limited territories. The shorter papers showed how difficult it was to conciliate agricultural and ecological objectives ; a certain opening can however be perceived : some traditional experimental lay-outs (trials on fertilization, over-seeding, grazing, sward dynamics, etc.) include the environmental factor, while other studies improve our knowledge of the ecology of plant and animal grassland species or deal with the perception of animal rearing by the users of the rural areas. This session will have stressed the importance of grasslands as regards the environment, and the inadequacy of the present scientific and technical information as a foundation for conservation policies and for operations of management (the social processes involved should be taken into account and the mechanisms acting on bio-diversity on man-made environment investigated) ; lastly, the importance of space is recognized, albeit accounted for in very recent times only.

question des pratiques appropriées demeure.
