    Transdiaphragmatic Liver Hernia in Adults

Right sided transdiaphragmatic liver herniation is a rare type of diaphragmatic hernia. Three such cases in adults are reported. A localized hepatic herniation (type III) masquerading as pulmonary neoplasm was revealed in one, while in the other two cases liver herniation was accompanied by herniation of bowel (type III). A history of trauma was present in all three patients with a latent period between injury and discovery of diaphragmatic hernia ranging from 10–20 years. The role of current imaging modalities in arriving at the correct diagnosis is emphasized.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72709/1/j.1440-1673.1985.tb01654.x.pd

Transmesocolic Herniation of Small Bowel Following Colonic Interposition

This report focuses on iatrogenic transmesocolic hernia causing small bowel obstruction following colonic interposition. Of 45 patients undergoing visceral esophageal substitution using colon, three developed small bowel obstruc-. tion due to internal herniation of a loop of small bowel through a defect in the mesocolon. Awareness of this unique cause of small bowel obstruction following colonic interposition and institution of early surgical treatment will prevent irreparable intestinal damage associated with internal Hernias.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72099/1/j.1440-1673.1985.tb01678.x.pd

Esophageal involvement in pemphigoid: Clinical and roentgen manifestations

Esophageal involvement in pemphigoid is rare. Review of 32 cases of pemphigoid seen at West Virginia University Hospital between January 1970 and December 1980 revealed 3 patients with esophageal involvement. These cases and review of reported cases of bullous and mucous membrane pemphigoid showed distinct radiographic features of esophageal involvement. These were diffuse inflammatory changes, adhesions, transverse and circumferential webs, and various sizes of strictures. Symptoms of dysphagia may precede radiographic findings by several months or years.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/48151/1/261_2005_Article_BF01887620.pd

Transient intraluminal diverticulum of the esophagus: A significant flow artifact

Esophagography in 12 patients showed a characteristic oval-to oblong-shaped barium collection surrounded by a thin radiolucent margin. The collection closely resembled an intraluminal diverticulum. Twelve patients demonstrated these findings, 6 on single-contrast and 6 on double-contrast examinations. These findings were not reproducible on repeat barium swallows, and endoscopy failed to demonstrate an intraluminal diverticulum. Nine of the patients underwent esophagectomy and esophageal substitution. Pathologic examination of the gross specimen did not reveal evidence of intraluminal diverticula. The association of this radiologic appearance in patients with moderately severe motility disorder of the esophagus is emphasized.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/48158/1/261_2005_Article_BF01887813.pd
