Fast preparation of critical ground states using superluminal fronts
We propose a spatio-temporal quench protocol that allows for the fast
preparation of ground states of gapless models with Lorentz invariance.
Assuming the system initially resides in the ground state of a corresponding
massive model, we show that a superluminally-moving `front' that
quenches the mass, leaves behind it (in space) a state
to the ground state of the gapless model.
Importantly, our protocol takes time to produce
the ground state of a system of size ( spatial dimensions), while
a fully adiabatic protocol requires time
to produce a state with exponential accuracy in . The physics of the
dynamical problem can be understood in terms of relativistic rarefaction of
excitations generated by the mass front. We provide proof-of-concept by solving
the proposed quench exactly for a system of free bosons in arbitrary
dimensions, and for free fermions in . We discuss the role of
interactions and UV effects on the free-theory idealization, before numerically
illustrating the usefulness of the approach via simulations on the quantum
Heisenberg spin-chain.Comment: 4.25 + 10 pages, 3 + 2 figure
Aspects of Integrability in N =4 SYM
Various recently developed connections between supersymmetric Yang-Mills
theories in four dimensions and two dimensional integrable systems serve as
crucial ingredients in improving our understanding of the AdS/CFT
correspondence. In this review, we highlight some connections between
superconformal four dimensional Yang-Mills theory and various integrable
systems. In particular, we focus on the role of Yangian symmetries in studying
the gauge theory dual of closed string excitations. We also briefly review how
the gauge theory connects to Calogero models and open quantum spin chains
through the study of the gauge theory duals of D3 branes and open strings
ending on them. This invited review, written for Modern Physics Letters-A, is
based on a seminar given at the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton.Comment: Invited brief review for Mod. Phys. Lett. A based on a talk at I.A.S,

Gauge Theories on Open Lie Algebra Non-Commutative Spaces
It is shown that non-commutative spaces, which are quotients of associative
algebras by ideals generated by non-linear relations of a particular type,
admit extremely simple formulae for deformed or star products. Explicit
construction of these star products is carried out. Quantum gauge theories are
formulated on these spaces, and the Seiberg-Witten map is worked out in detail.Comment: 11 pages, no figures, Some comments and references adde
Collective coherent population trapping in a thermal field
We analyzed the efficiency of coherent population trapping (CPT) in a
superposition of the ground states of three-level atoms under the influence of
the decoherence process induced by a broadband thermal field. We showed that in
a single atom there is no perfect CPT when the atomic transitions are affected
by the thermal field. The perfect CPT may occur when only one of the two atomic
transitions is affected by the thermal field. In the case when both atomic
transitions are affected by the thermal field, we demonstrated that regardless
of the intensity of the thermal field the destructive effect on the CPT can be
circumvented by the collective behavior of the atoms. An analytic expression
was obtained for the populations of the upper atomic levels which can be
considered as a measure of the level of thermal decoherence. The results show
that the collective interaction between the atoms can significantly enhance the
population trapping in that the population of the upper state decreases with
increased number of atoms. The physical origin of this feature was explained by
the semiclassical dressed atom model of the system. We introduced the concept
of multiatom collective coherent population trapping by demonstrating the
existence of collective (entangled) states whose storage capacity is larger
than that of the equivalent states of independent atoms.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Experimental study of two separating turbulent boundary layers
A detailed study of two strong adverse pressure gradient flows, one with a free-stream velocity of 35 m/sec, at throat (producing a Re sub theta of 27000 at detachment) and another with free-stream velocity of 22 m/sec, at throat (producing a Re sub theta of 19000 at detachment) is presented. In these examples flows separate slowly and reattach very rapidly over a very short distance in a streamwise direction. In the backflow region, there appears to be a semi-logarithmically flat region in the streamwise fluctuating velocity component, u', which spreads over a definite range of y/delta. In power spectra, the flow variables phi sub upsilon upsilon (kappa sub 1 delta)/ -uv bar sub max vs. kappa sub 1 delta forms a unique set of scaling parameters for adverse pressure gradient flows. Experimental results show good agreement with previous studies
Enhancing laser sideband cooling in one-dimensional optical lattices via the dipole interaction
We study resolved sideband laser cooling of a one-dimensional optical lattice
with one atom per site, and in particular the effect of the dipole interaction
between radiating atoms. For simplicity, we consider the case where only a
single cooling laser is applied. We derive a master equation, and solve it in
the limit of a deep lattice and weak laser driving. We find that the dipole
interaction significantly changes the final temperature of the particles,
increasing it for some phonon wavevectors and decreasing it for others. The
total phonon energy over all modes is typically higher than in the
non-interacting case, but can be made lower by the right choice of parameters
Competition between Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Raman Processes
We present a theoretical formulation of competition among electromagnetically
induced transparency (EIT) and Raman processes. The latter become important
when the medium can no longer be considered to be dilute. Unlike the standard
formulation of EIT, we consider all fields applied and generated as interacting
with both the transitions of the scheme. We solve Maxwell equations
for the net generated field using a fast-Fourier-transform technique and obtain
predictions for the probe, control and Raman fields. We show how the intensity
of the probe field is depleted at higher atomic number densities due to the
build up of multiple Raman fields.Comment: 3.5 pages, 7 figure
Single-strand selective monofunctional uracil-DNA glycosylase (SMUG1) deficiency is linked to aggressive breast cancer and predicts response to adjuvant therapy
Uracil in DNA is an important cause of mutagenesis. SMUG1 is a uracil DNA glycosylase that removes uracil through base excision repair. SMUG1 also processes radiation induced oxidative base damage as well as 5-fluorouracil incorporated into DNA during chemotherapy. We investigated SMUG1 mRNA expression in 249 primary breast cancers. SMUG1 protein expression was investigated in 1165 breast tumours randomised into two cohorts [training set (n=583) and test set (n=582)]. SMUG1 and chemotherapy response was also investigated in a series of 315 ER negative tumours (n=315). For mechanistic insights, SMUG1 was correlated to biomarkers of aggressive phenotype, DNA repair, cell cycle and apoptosis. Low SMUG1 mRNA expression was associated with adverse disease specific survival (p=0.008) and disease free survival (p=0.008). Low SMUG1 protein expression (25%) was associated with high histological grade (p<0.0001), high mitotic index (p<0.0001), pleomorphism (p<0.0001), glandular de-differentiation (p=0.0001), absence of hormonal receptors (ER-/PgR-/AR) (p<0.0001), presence of basal-like (p<0.0001) and triple negative phenotypes (p<0.0001). Low SMUG1 protein expression was associated with loss of BRCA1 (p<0.0001), ATM (p<0.0001) and XRCC1 (p<0.0001). Low p27 (p<0.0001), low p21 (p=0.023), mutant p53 (p=0.037), low MDM2 (p<0.0001), low MDM4 (p=0.004), low Bcl-2 (p=0.001), low Bax (p=0.003) and high MIB1 (p<0.0001) were likely in low SMUG1 tumours. Low SMUG1 protein expression was associated with poor prognosis in univariate (p<0.001) and multivariate analysis (p<0.01). In ER+ cohort that received adjuvant endocrine therapy, low SMUG1 protein expression remains associated with poor survival (p<0.01). In ER- cohort that received adjuvant chemotherapy, low SMUG1 protein expression is associated with improved survival (p=0.043). Our study suggests that low SMUG1 expression may correlate to adverse clinicopathological features and predict response to adjuvant therapy in breast cancer
Higher Charges in Dynamical Spin Chains for SYM Theory
We construct, to the first two non-trivial orders, the next conserved charge
in the su(2|3) sector of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. This represents a test of
integrability in a sector where the interactions change the number of sites of
the chain. The expression for the charge is completely determined by the
algebra and can be written in a diagrammatic form in terms of the interactions
already present in the Hamiltonian. It appears likely that this diagrammatic
expression remains valid in the full theory and can be generalized to higher
loops and higher charges thus helping in establishing complete integrability
for these dynamical chains.Comment: 14 pages; V2: Appendix added with diagrammatic expression for H_{3,2
