    Effects of Salinity on Leaf and Grain Protein in Some Genotypes of Oat (Avena sativa L.)

    The protein content in oat, like in the other cereal species, is much influenced by the environmental conditions as well as by the variety. This investigation was carried out on the effect of salinity on protein content in leaves and grains of four genotypes of oat (JHO-822, JHO-851, Kent and UPO-94). The plants were irrigated with different saline waters (3, 6, 7.2, 10, 12 and 14 dSm-1) in the field. Protein in leaf was analyzed at 90 days after sowing. Cv. JHO-822 and JHO-851 contained higher leaf protein at 3 and 6 dSm-1 but lower at 7.2 to 14 dSm-1. Kent and UPO-94 registered an increase in leaf protein only at 3 dSm-1 but declined at all salinities. Grain protein of cultivars of oat also registered significant enhancement at 3 dSm-1 but significant reductions at other salinities. The higher protein content in leaves and grains in cv. JHO-822 may be due to higher photosynthetic rate of plants due to higher total leaf area

    Proposal and Validation of Usability Model for Component Based Software System

    Increasing demand of rapid and cost effective development of software system has increased the demand of Component Based Software Engineering (CBSE). In CBSE, software system is developed by using existing components. These components can be in-house components or third party components. To develop a Component Based Software System (CBSS), it is important to select the suitable component in such a manner that the components of the software system do not affect each other. To increase the acceptance of the CBSS among the users and the market value of the software industries, it is important to increase the usability of the CBSS. Several usability models have been proposed for traditional and object-oriented software system (OOSS), but there is no usability model for CBSS. Existing traditional and object-oriented models can’t be perfectly suitable for CBSS because of the unique characteristics of the components. This paper presents a usability model (UMCBSS) for CBSS. The proposed usability model is based on most significant usability factors. These factors are analysed from CBSS quality models. With the help of proposed model, usability is evaluated by using two different techniques i.e., centroid method and bisector method in MATLAB. Experimental results are also validated by using Center of Gravity (COG) and Mean-Max method. With the help of the proposed model, developers of the CBSS will be able to measure the usability of CBSS and to remove the usability flaws from the software system

    A study to know the serum total testosterone levels in type II diabetes mellitus male patients from North India

    Background: Diabetes mellitus is major public health issue facing the world in present century and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing explosively.  There are various diabetes related complications, one of which is low testosterone levels in men. This study was designed to estimate the serum testosterone level in male patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods: The patients of type -2 diabetes mellitus were picked up from out-patient and in-patients section of the hospital at random.Results: Seventy male  patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were enrolled during the study period. The mean age of study population was 56.36±10.26 years (range 36-70), while that of control group patients was found to be 39.80±7.92years. Family history of diabetes was present in 14 (22.2%) patients. The mean HbA1c in study group was 8.83±1.95 %, which was significantly higher as compared to control group with HbA1c 4.82±0.40 %. Among study group, lower serum total testosterone level was observed in 85.7 % cases and normal level in 14.3 % cases. Among control group, lower serum total testosterone level was observed in 6.7 % cases and normal level in 93.3 % cases.Conclusions: The present study highlighted that significant difference in serum total testosterone level has been observed between cases and control groups (X2 =55.7, P=0.0001)

    Association of Epicardial Fat with Metabolic Syndrome in Indian Population

    Introduction: Visceral obesity and dyslipidemia are the two most commonly occurring components of the metabolic syndrome. Epicardial fat is a true visceral adipose tissue deposited around the heart and has characteristics of a high insulin-resistant tissue. Material and methods: The study included 66 subjects (33 cases and 33 controls). Epicardial fat thickness was measured by echocardiography on the free wall of the right ventricle from both parasternal long- and short-axis views and anthropometric and biochemical parameters were recorded. Results: Range of epicardial fat thickness varied between 0.8 to 7.3 mm. The normal cutoff value is considered to be between 1 to 4 mm. The mean epicardial fat thickness was found to be 4.3 ± 1.83 mm (mean ± standard deviation) in females and 3.5 ± 1.18 mm in males amongst the cases, and 2.4 ± 1.33 mm in females and 2.2 ± 1.02 mm in males in the control group. Epicardial fat thickness was higher in the patients with metabolic syndrome as compared to controls. There was a statistical significant correlation between epicardial adipose tissue and body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides and homeostasis model for assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA IR). Conclusion: Our data showed that epicardial adipose tissue measured by echocardiography is related to the main anthropometric and clinical parameters of metabolic syndrome which was the objective of our study. Epicardial adipose tissue measurement could be an important tool to increase the knowledge of metabolic syndrome on epidemiological basis
