A SYLLABUS DESIGN MODEL FOR INDONESIAN SPEAKING COURSE INTENDED FOR NEGOTIATED INDIVIDUAL LEARNING PROGRAM FOR FOREIGN VOLUNTEERS OF INDONESIA INTERNATIONAL WORK CAMP (IIWC)
Indonesia International work Camp (IIWC) is an international organization. The organization facilitates Indonesian course to foreign volunteers who conduct a voluntary project in Indonesia. The course started in 2009 up to now. If there is one lack from the course, it is because the course did not have any syllabus. This Descriptive research study has the main purpose to design a negotiated individual learning model program which is documented to be Indonesian speaking syllabus for IIWC foreign volunteers based on contextual field at a project site.
This is a descriptive research which employs a case study approach. Questionnaires, interviews, notes, a teaching journal, recordings, photographs and videos were taken during the course process. The population of this research is the IIWC foreign volunteers. The sample of this research is Yurie Takahashi, a Japanese foreign volunteer who was the only new foreign volunteer who came in Indonesia at that time. She conducted a social international voluntary service in Indonesia. The major research participants are I as the Indonesian speaking instructor, and the foreign volunteer as the learner. The collected data is analyzed using a process of reflection and interpretation that is categorized and coded.
The findings are first gained from need analysis in order to investigate the learner needs in learning speaking Indonesian. Then the writer was inspired to compose the learning learner’s needs in the course program of speaking Indonesian, which the composition is documented in a form of syllabus. After getting the syllabus, the writer goes to have further investigation by composing the materials mentioned in the syllabus to be created to become a book used for the teaching-learning handout of the course program.
It is suggested to the other IIWC’s Indonesian speaking instructors who will teach foreign volunteers at the orphanage can study and consult the syllabus in advance, so that they know the starting points in surveying the existing situation. It is also suggested to other researchers to take the uninvestigated cases in this research, regarding Indonesian listening and pronunciation problems which later can be contributed as well to knowledge of applied linguistics.

This action research included a basic action research routine: look, think and act. An approach employed in this research is case study. Questionnaires, interviews, notes, a teaching journal, recordings, photographs and videos were taken during the course process. The population of this research is the IIWC foreign volunteers. The sample of this research is Yurie Takahashi, a Japanese foreign volunteer who was the only new foreign volunteer came in Indonesia at that time. She conducted a social international voluntary service in Indonesia. The major research participants are I as the Indonesian speaking instructor, and the foreign volunteer as the learner. The collected data is analyzed using a process of reflection and interpretation that is categorizing and coding. The findings are: the syllabus for Indonesian speaking course, for IIWC foreign volunteers who conducted a project at the project site of Fatimatuzzahro orphanage Semarang central-Java Indonesia. The syllabus employs a learning centered approach. Then the program evaluation revealed the instructor’s teaching and attitudes from the learner’s perspective and the learner’s progresses after joining the course. Eventually, the teaching materials compilation was taught from the syllabus made to be a handout of the course which can support the teaching-learning processes later. It is suggested to other IIWC’s Indonesian speaking instructors who will teach foreign volunteers at the orphanage can look at the syllabus in advance, so that they can know starting points in surveying the existing situation. A Study of Kinesics Category and the Manifestation Towards a Toddler Attitudes
Kinesics, or body language, is one of the most powerful ways that humans can communicate nonverbally. It is used to portray moods and emotions and to emphasize or contradict what is being said. From the kinesics point of view, there are several facial expressions and gestures done to express respond, and do activities toward people around. From the research finding, there are kinesics expressions done from the child. There are several classifications in kinesics; Emblems a substitute for words and phrases. Illustrators go with or reinforce verbal messages. Affect Displays Show emotion. Regulators Control the flow and pace of communication. Adaptors Release physical or emotional tension. This study investigates on how a kid expresses their non-verbal behavior using the kinesics classification and based on them, the kid’s verbal expressions belong to illustrators, affect displays and adaptor
A Material Development of Speech Act as its Contribution For a Vocational High School English Handbook at an Eleven Grade
Theis research has a prominet goal, idenitfying types of speech acts uttered by an English teacher at a vocational high school. This work uses Searle’s theory to discover the dominant kinds of speech act employed by the teacher. The researchers also investigated the additional utterances in showing learning movement. The research methodology is descriptive-qualitative research, where the researcher found three kinds of speech act uttered by the teacher; directive, representative, and expressive. The researchers calculated the data finding and found 297 utterances which comprised of 246 directives utterances or 82,83% of overall data, 45 representative utterances or represented the 15.15% of data, and 6 expressive utterances which covered 2,02%. The most obtrusive was directive speech acts (82.83%) and the less frequent was expressive speech act (2.02%). The most obtrusive was directive speech acts because the teacher often used directives (questioning) to handle the students in the classroom and made sure that the students understand the aims of the English material
Creating an Online Quiz Learning Media Using Flexiquiz to Practice Essential Vocabulary for the TOEFL
The objectives of this research are (1) to explain a tutorial in creating Flexiquiz web application to essential vocabulary learning for the TOEFL, (2) to explain the Flexiquiz web application to essential vocabulary learning for the TOEFL as a learning strategy in combining the user manual with the web application for online learning, (3) to know users’ responses towards the online TOEFL quiz in essential vocabulary learning using Flexiquiz web application. This study is a qualitative research type and it is categorized as descriptive research because it is aimed to describe a learning strategy using Flexiquiz web application that can be manifested as materials integrartion. The practice questions that are available in Flexiquiz web application are taken from a book entitled “Barron’s: Essential Word for the TOEFL”. It means that the writer joined between the book with the Flexiquiz web application. The data gathered in this study are a questionnaire and a test result using Flexiquiz. The results of this study expose that the users of the Flexiquiz web application have interest to use Flexiquiz web application as online strategy to learn. Two features of Flexiquiz web application that can improve learning in vocabulary are; Grading and Review Answer. The conclusion can be drawn in this study shows the result that online learning using Flexiquiz web application is interesting, fun and easy
DEIXIS ON WEDNESDAY: WHAT ARE THEY?
This research aims to classify the kinds of deixis and identify the most dominant deixis used in the Wednesday serial movie. It also analyzes to whom, what, and where the actresses are addressed based on the deixis used in the utterances in the Wednesday serial movie. The method used in this research is the descriptive-qualitative method. The researcher applied Levinson’s theory to identify and classify the kinds of deixis in the Wednesday serial movie. The data used in this research are utterances spoken by the main character in the Wednesday serial movie. In analyzing the research, the researcher found 1.805 deictic words included in the kinds of deixis. According to the findings of this research, there are five kinds of deixis contained in the Wednesday serial movie from chapters I -VIII, namely person deixis with a percentage of 83,4%, time deixis with a percentage of 4,4%, place deixis with a percentage of 2,6%, social deixis with a percentage of 4,7%, and discourse deixis with a percentage of 4,9%. The most dominant deixis used in the Wednesday serial movie is person deixis. In general, person deixis shows the person as a speaker, listener, or someone who is addressed in a speech event. Time deixis indicates the time period when an utterance is spoken; place deixis indicates the relative location of participants in a speech event; social deixis indicates the social relationship between the speaker and the listener; and discourse deixis is concerned as if it is used to relate to other parts of the discourse
Pejorative Words Indicating Indonesian Hate Speech
The study aims to identify the pejorative words in @detiknews’ comments and hate speech targets. This study was qualitative research, specifically descriptive content analysis. The researchers took the data from Indonesian comments in eighteen news of @detiknews’ Instagram account. The researchers used MAXQDA to show the results of the coding process. The study has found seven categories of Thurlow: social personality, uncategorized, top-5, racist, homophobic, phallocentric, and physicality. In this study, pejorative words were in the standard and non-standard Indonesian, local languages (Javanese, Betawi), vulgar slang, and animal metaphors. The study has classified pejorative words (Thurlow, 2001) as directed or generalized hate speech (Elsherief et al., 2018). The findings show that directed speech was a personal matter. To sum up, pejorative words indicating hate speech in Indonesia are not randomly used; it intends to show the users’ disagreement toward the publisher or another user’s comment: it is addressed explicitly to either directed or generalized targets
Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Darmasiswa International Students in Central Java Indonesia
The research probed the cross-cultural adaptation of international students who participated in the Darmasiswa program in Indonesia. They have various cultural backgrounds; they lived in Java and interacted with Javanese cultures. The Darmasiswa students’ varied experiences brought particular attention to their competence to adapt to a host country. This study aims to discover how Darmasiswa students overcome the assimilation process, embrace the psychological elements of intercultural communication, and how they handle the adaptation process. It also seeks to discover the efforts to make this program successful and recognise how the participants deal with the challenges of adapting to the local culture. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and employed an in-depth interview to approach the research participants. The participants came from Myanmar, Japan, Singapore, India, Hungaria, Timor Leste, and Thailand. They joined the Darmasiswa program in 2019 to study and learn bahasa Indonesia, the arts, and the cultures. They studied at four universities in Semarang for one year in Central Java Province, Indonesia. Findings showed that the Darmasiswa students’ adaptation and interaction processes were varied. The culture shock experienced by the students were influenced by their family value from their home countries. Internal and external factors played an essential role in influencing the success of the Darmasiswa students’ adaptation. The factors include; communication system, symbolic interaction, social life, personal mindset, the host society's motivation, and the Darmasiswa students’ involvement with the host country’s cultural activities. Those factors affected the students' adaptation levels and learning achievement in the program
The Challenges and Opportunities of Teaching EFL in Revolution 4.0 Era
This research aims to investigate the challenges and opportunities to teach English in the fourth industrial revolution, and improved the researcher's understanding and expertise about teaching English in the 4.0 industry revolution and researched issues educators face while teaching English of EFL. This study using qualitative method. 3 Englsih teachers as the participants in this research from level of school SD/MI, SMP/MTs, SMA/K/MA especially in BBC Tlogosari. Interviews and questionnaires were used as collecting data techniques. Twenty questions from the questionnaires were used, and three questions from the interview were about the opportunities and difficulties of teaching EFL in the context of Revolution 4.0. In addition, difficulties in the process of teaching and learning exist, especially with modern technology and more innovation. Mostly students will access the internet without assistance, which will have positive or even negative impact, for this reason the role and strategy of educators and facilitators is important
The Analysis Of Illocutionary Acts In Artemis Fowl Movie And Its Contribution In Teaching Speaking
This research is investigates the illocutionary acts in Artemis Fowl movie and its contribution to teaching speaking in a junior high school. It focuses on finding the most dominant type of illocutionary acts. It used a descriptive qualitative research where the data was collected from the main character’s utterances in the Artemis Fowl movie.The result of this research, showed that: first, the researcher found four types of illocutionary act which are assertive (117 utterances) with presents 58.5%, directive (57 utterances) with 28.5%, commissive (15 utterances) with 7.5%, and expressive (11 utterances) with 5.5% and the declarative is not found in this research. Through the contribution of illocutionary acts, the students can learn the expression of giving commands in the teaching-learning process in speaking class using Artemis Fowl movie
