    Association between low thyroid-stimulating hormone, posterior cortical atrophy and nitro-oxidative stress in elderly patients with cognitive dysfunction

    Introduction: Cortical atrophy is known to be a valuable sign of cognitive decline. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between low thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), posterior cortical atrophy (Koedam score – KS) and nitro-oxidative stress in elderly patients. Material and methods: A study (SG) and a control group (CG), each subdivided by gender, were investigated. Subjects older than 59 years with low serum TSH level and with mild cognitive impairment were included in the SG. The CG was formed by subjects free of significant cortical atrophy and free or thyroid dysfunction. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients (Mini Mental State Examination, MMSE), Koedam score on cranial magnetic resonance imaging, and blood parameters (TSH, FT4, and nitric oxide – NOx) were assessed. Results: Subjects in the study group had fewer years of education above the 8th grade compared with the control group (p < 0.0001). A significantly higher percentage of subjects in the study group had a Koedam score of 2 or 3 compared with controls, who had in the majority of cases a Koedam score of zero (p < 0.02). Significantly higher NOx levels were observed when study groups of both genders were compared with corresponding controls (p 0.70). Nitric oxide was found to be significantly associated with TSH (p < 0.03) and KS (p < 0.002) when the whole study group was considered as well as when just the non-smoker study group was investigated. Conclusions : Our study revealed an association between subclinical thyroid hypofunction, nitro-oxidative stress, and posterior cortical atrophy as an early stage of global atrophy

    Preemptive Analgesic and Antioxidative Effect of Curcumin for Experimental Migraine

    Objective. Our study aimed to investigate the analgesic and antioxidative stress effects of Curcumin (CC) in experimental migraine induced by Nitroglycerin (NTG) on rats, compared with Indomethacin (ID) and Propranolol (PP) treatments. Material and Methods. Five groups of 10 rats treated i.p. were investigated: control group (healthy rats) injected with saline solution (0.9%), NTG-control group injected with NTG (1 mg/100 gbw, bw = body weight), and three groups with pretreatment applied 30 min previous to the formalin test (NTG + CC group: Curcumin (10 mg/100 gbw), NTG + PP group: Propranolol (100 μg/100 gbw), and NTG + ID group: Indomethacin (0.5 mg/100 gbw)). Formalin test was performed and number of flinches and shakes were counted. Several oxidative stress parameters were also assessed. Results. The smallest values of malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NOx), and total oxidative status (TOS) were observed on NTG + CC with significant differences as compared with the control group (p<0.0001). The group pretreated with Curcumin proved significantly smaller number of flinches and shakes compared with both NTG + PP and NTG + ID. Conclusion. Our study demonstrates a superior activity of Curcumin not only versus control, but also versus Propranolol and Indomethacin

    Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a disease with unclear etiology or pathogenesis, categorized by the World Health Organization as oral lichenoid lesions (OLL; interface mucositis or lichenoid mucositis) into a group of potentially malignant disorders. The diagnosis of OLP is challenging because the clinical and histopathologic features are frequently seen in OLP, OLL and/or other mucosal diseases with lichenoid characteristics. Furthermore, OLP has a dynamic nature. Finally, an early and precise diagnosis can play a decisive role, allowing timely treatment and thus improving the patient quality of life. This article summarizes the state-of-the-art regarding OLP and OLL and discusses the challenges faced on making an accurate diagnosis, aiming to provide a practical guideline for the postgraduates and oral physicians in reaching the diagnosis of these lesions.Oralni lihen planus (OLP) je bolest nejasne etiologije ili patogeneze. Prema Svjetskoj zdravstvenoj organizaciji kategorizira se kao oralne lihenoidne lezije (OLL; prijelazni mukozitis ili lihenoidni mukozitis) u skupinu potencijalno zloćudnih bolesti. Dijagnosticiranje OLP-a je zahtjevno, jer se klinička i histopatološka obilježja često vide u OLP-u, OLL-u i/ili drugim bolestima sluznice s lihenoidnim značajkama. Nadalje, OLP ima dinamičnu narav. Konačno, rana i precizna dijagnoza može imati odlučnu ulogu i omogućiti pravodobno liječenje te time poboljšati bolesnikovu kvalitetu života. Ovaj pregled sažima današnja saznanja o OLP-u i OLL-u te raspravlja o izazovima kod postavljanja dijagnoze, a cilj je pružiti praktične smjernice za dijagnostiku ovih promjena za postdiplomante i liječnike oralne medicine

    Post retraction citations among manuscripts reporting a radiology-imaging diagnostic method.

    Our study aimed to evaluate the trends of post retraction citations of articles reporting a radiology-imaging diagnostic method and to find if a different pattern exists between manuscripts reporting an ultrasound method and those reporting other radiology diagnostic methods. This study reviewed retractions stored in PubMed on the subject of radiology-imaging diagnosis to identify the motivation, time from publication to retraction, and citations before and after retraction. The PubMed database was searched on June 2017 to retrieve the retracted articles, and the Scopus database was screened to identify the post-retraction citations. The full text was screened to see the type of post-retraction citation (positive/negative) and whether the cited article appears or not as retracted. One hundred and two retractions were identified, representing 3.5% of the retracted articles indexed by PubMed, out of which 54 were included in the analysis. Half of the articles were retracted in the first 24 months after publication, and the number of post retraction citations was higher than the number of citations before retraction in 30 out of 54 cases (US methods: 9/20, other diagnostic methods 21/34, P-value = 0.2312). The plagiarism was the most common reason for retraction (31%), followed by repetitive publication (26%), and errors in data/manuscript (24%). In less than 2% of cases, the retracted articles appear as retracted in the text or reference list, while the negative citation is observed in 4.84% among manuscripts reporting an US diagnostic method and 0.32% among manuscripts reporting a diagnostic method other than US (P-value = 0.0004). No significant differences were observed when post retraction weighted citation index (WCI, no. of citations weighted by citation window) was compared to WCI prior retraction (P-value = 0.5972). In light of the reported results, we enumerated some recommendations that could potentially minimize the referral to retracted studies as valid

    Effects of Curcumin Nanoparticles in Isoproterenol-Induced Myocardial Infarction

    Curcumin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anticarcinogenic, and cardiovascular protective effects. Our study is aimed at evaluating the effects of pretreatment with curcumin nanoparticles (CCNP) compared to conventional curcumin (CC) on isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial infarction (MI) in rats. Fifty-six Wistar-Bratislava white rats were randomly divided into eight groups of seven rats each. Curcumin and curcumin nanoparticles were given by gavage in three different doses (100 mg/kg body weight (bw), 150 mg/kg bw, and 200 mg/kg bw) for 15 days. The MI was induced on day 13 using 100 mg/kg bw ISO administered twice, with the second dose 24 h after the initial dose. The blood samples were taken 24 h after the last dose of ISO. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective effects were evaluated in all groups. All doses of CC and CCNP offered a cardioprotective effect by preventing creatine kinase-MB leakage from cardiomyocytes, with the best result for CCNP. All the oxidative stress parameters were significantly improved after CCNP compared to CC pretreatment. CCNP was more efficient than CC in limiting the increase in inflammatory cytokine levels (such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1α, IL-1β, MCP-1, and RANTES) after MI. MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels decreased more after pretreatment with CCNP than with CC. CCNP better prevented myocardial necrosis and reduced interstitial edema and neutrophil infiltration than CC, on histopathological examination. Therefore, improving the bioactivity of curcumin by nanotechnology may help limit cardiac injury after myocardial infarction
