Preclinical Aspects on Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles and Their Interventions as Anticancer Agents: Enucleation, Apoptosis and Other Mechanism
The broad area of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (M-IONP) applications and their exclusive physico-chemical characteristics (superparamagnetic properties per se, solubility and stability in aqueous solutions, and high bioavailability in vivo) make these nanoparticles suitable candidates for biomedical uses. The most employed magnetic iron oxides in the biomedical field are magnetite and maghemite. Cancer represents a complex pathology that implies multiple mechanisms and signaling pathways, this complexity being responsible for the increased resistance to therapy and the lack of an effective curative treatment. A potential useful alternative was considered to be the use of magnetic iron nanoparticles. The M-IONPs proved to be effective as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging, as drug delivery carriers for different therapeutic agents, in magnetic cell separation assays, and are suitable to be engineered in terms of size, targeted delivery and substance release. Moreover, their in vivo administration was considered safe, and recent studies indicated their efficiency as anticancer agents. This chapter aims to furnish an overview regarding the physico-chemical properties of M-IONPs (mainly magnetite, maghemite and hematite), the synthesis methods and their in vitro biological impact on healthy and cancer cell lines, by describing their potential mechanism of actionâenucleation, apoptosis or other mechanisms

Comparisons Between Tridentate Bis(benzazoles)-pyridine and Bis(benzazoles)triazine Ligands: a Theoretical Study
Twelve bis(benzazole) structures with potential ligand character were investigated by means of computational chemistry. Global and local reactivity descriptors within DFT (Density Functional Theory) theory (Fukui functions, chemical potential, hardness, electrophilicity index) have been computed at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. NICS(0) (Nucleus Independent Chemical Shift) index computations were employed for the evaluation of the local aromatic character of each heterocyclic moiety. Best results have been reported for the bis(benzimidazole) derivatives. Copper and zinc complexes of the investigated tridentate ligands have been proposed

Assigning the Geographical Origin of Meat and Animal Rearing System Using Isotopic and Elemental Fingerprints
In this study, the stable isotope, and elemental fingerprints of 120 meat samples were determined. The Partial Last Squares-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) method was applied to build classification models for chicken and pork meat samples according to the geographical origin (different Romanian regions) and the animal growing system (animals coming from yard rearing systems versus animals coming from industrial farms). The accuracy of the geographical origin differentiation model was 93.8% for chicken and 71.8% for pork meat. The principal discrimination markers for this classification were: B, Na, K, V, As, Se, Rb, Nb, Cd, Sn, δ13C, δ2H, and δ18O (for chicken meat) and B, Na, Mg, K, Ca, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Sb, Ba, Pb, δ13C, δ2H, and δ18O (for pork meat). The PLS-DA models were able to differentiate the meat samples according to the animal rearing system with 100% accuracy (for pork meat) and 98% accuracy (for chicken meat), based on the main predictors: B, K, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Nb, Sn, δ13C, and δ2H (for chicken meat) and Se, Rb, Nb, Sb, Ba, Pb, and δ13C (for pork meat)
Isotopic and Elemental Determination in Some Romanian Apple Fruit Juices
H, C, O stable isotope ratios and the content of some heavy elements of 31 Romanian single-strength organic apple juices collected from four Transylvanian areas are discussed in this study. The aim of this study was to measure the 2H/1H, 18O/16O, 13C/12C ratios of these juices and their elemental profile and to establish a database of authentic values to be used for adulteration and authenticity testing. Our results have shown mean values of δ18O=-4.2â° and δDδ-46.5â°, respectively, for apples from Transylvania and at the same time the mean value of δ13C=-28.2â°. The content of Cd, Pb, U, Zn, As was below the acceptable limits stipulated in US-EPA standard for drinking water. Cu and Cr limits exceeded for one single juice; Ni content for some apple juices from Maramures, Alba, and Cluj was higher than the acceptable value
Sex-Related Differences in Pharmacological Response to CNS Drugs: A Narrative Review
In the last decades, both animal and human studies have neglected female subjects with the aim of evading a theorized intricacy of feminine hormonal status. However, clinical experience proves that pharmacological response may vary between the two sexes since pathophysiological dissimilarities between men and women significantly influence the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs. Sex-related differences in central nervous system (CNS) medication are particularly challenging to assess due to the complexity of disease manifestation, drugsâ intricate mechanisms of action, and lack of trustworthy means of evaluating the clinical response to medication. Although many studies showed contrary results, it appears to be a general tendency towards a certain sex-related difference in each pharmacological class. Broadly, opioids seem to produce better analgesia in women especially when they are administered for a prolonged period of time. On the other hand, respiratory and gastrointestinal adverse drug reactions (ADRs) following morphine therapy are more prevalent among female patients. Regarding antidepressants, studies suggest that males might respond better to tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), whereas females prefer selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), probably due to their tolerance to particular ADRs. In general, studies missed spotting any significant sex-related differences in the therapeutic effect of antiepileptic drugs (AED), but ADRs have sex variations in conjunction with sex hormonesâ metabolism. On the subject of antipsychotic therapy, women appear to have a superior response to this pharmacological class, although there are also studies claiming the opposite. However, it seems that reported sex-related differences regarding ADRs are steadier: women are more at risk of developing various side effects, such as metabolic dysfunctions, cardiovascular disorders, and hyperprolactinemia. Taking all of the above into account, it seems that response to CNS drugs might be occasionally influenced by sex as a biological variable. Nonetheless, although for each pharmacological class, studies generally converge to a certain pattern, opposite outcomes are standing in the way of a clear consensus. Hence, the fact that so many studies are yielding conflicting results emphasizes once again the need to address sex-related differences in pharmacological response to drugs
Phytochemical Screening and Biological Activity of MenthaâĂâpiperita L. and Lavandula angustifolia Mill. Extracts
The present study aimed to investigate the phytochemical composition of MenthaâĂâpiperita L. (MP) and Lavandula angustifolia Mill. (LA) extracts in terms of hydroxycinnamic acid (HCAs) content, in particular, caffeic (CA), p-cumaric (CU), ferulic (FE), and rosmarinic (RS) acids using LC-MS. Also, the in vitro antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and the antiproliferative activity against two cancerous cell lines (A375 and MDA-MB-231) using the MTT assay were tested. The extracts were prepared using aromatic water which resulted from the extraction of oils from plants as extraction medium, with/without acid. The results showed that RS and FE represent the majority of HCAs compounds; the highest content of FE is found in LA (7.47âmg¡gâ1d.m.), and the maximum content of RS in MP (6.36âmg¡gâ1d.m.). Regarding the antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, the two extracts showed a simulative role on the growth rate of Staphyloccocus aureus, but a slightly inhibitory effect (69.12%) can be attributed to the acidic environment. In terms of biological activity against MDA-MB-231 breast carcinoma cell line, and A375 human melanoma cell line, at the highest employed concentration, 150âÎźg¡mLâ1, the tested extracts present a weak antiproliferative effect
