Silicon nanoparticles and interstellar extinction
To examine a recently proposed hypothesis that silicon nanoparticles are the
source of extended red emission (ERE) in the interstellar medium, we performed
a detailed modeling of the mean Galactic extinction in the presence of silicon
nanoparticles. For this goal we used the appropriate optical constants of
nanosized Si, essentially different from those of bulk Si due to quantum
confinement. It was found that a dust mixture of silicon nanoparticles, bare
graphite grains, silicate core-organic refractory mantle grains and three-layer
silicate-water ice-organic refractory grains works well in explaining the
extinction and, in addition, results in the acceptable fractions of UV/visible
photons absorbed by silicon nanoparticles: 0.071-0.081. Since these fractions
barely agree with the fraction of UV/visible photons needed to excite the
observed ERE, we conclude that the intrinsic photon conversion efficiency of
the photoluminescence by silicon nanoparticles must be near 100%, if they are

BAC-FISH assays delineate complex chromosomal rearrangements in a case of post-Chernobyl childhood thyroid cancer
Structural chromosome aberrations are known hallmarks of many solid tumors. In the papillary form of thyroid
cancer (PTC), for example, activation of the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) genes, RET and neurotrophic tyrosine kinase
receptor type I (NTRK1) by intra- and interchromosomal rearrangements has been suggested as a cause of the disease. However,
many phenotypically similar tumors do not carry an activated RET or NTRK-1 gene or express abnormal ret or NTRK-
1 transcripts. Thus, we hypothesize that other cellular RTK-type genes are aberrantly expressed in these tumors. Using fluorescence
in situ hybridization-based methods, we are studying karyotype changes in a relatively rare subgroup of PTCs,
i.e., tumors that arose in children following the 1986 nuclear accident in Chernobyl, Ukraine. Here, we report our technical
developments and progress in deciphering complex chromosome aberrations in case S48TK, an aggressively growing PTC
cell line, which shows an unusual high number of unbalanced translocations
Rapid mapping of chromosomal breakpoints: from blood to BAC in 20 days
Structural chromosome aberrations and associated segmental or chromosomal aneusomies are major causes of
reproductive failure in humans. Despite the fact that carriers of reciprocal balanced translocation often have no other clinical
symptoms or disease, impaired chromosome homologue pairing in meiosis and karyokinesis errors lead to over-representation
of translocations carriers in the infertile population and in recurrent pregnancy loss patients. At present, clinicians have no
means to select healthy germ cells or balanced zygotes in vivo, but in vitro fertilization (IVF) followed by preimplantation
genetic diagnosis (PGD) offers translocation carriers a chance to select balanced or normal embryos for transfer. Although a
combination of telomeric and centromeric probes can differentiate embryos that are unbalanced from normal or unbalanced
ones, a seemingly random position of breakpoints in these IVF-patients poses a serious obstacle to differentiating between normal
and balanced embryos, which for most translocation couples, is desirable. Using a carrier with reciprocal translocation
t(4;13) as an example, we describe our state-of-the-art approach to the preparation of patient-specific DNA probes that span or
'extent' the breakpoints. With the techniques and resources described here, most breakpoints can be accurately mapped in a matter
of days using carrier lymphocytes, and a few extra days are allowed for PGD-probe optimization. The optimized probes will
then be suitable for interphase cell analysis, a prerequisite for PGD since blastomeres are biopsied from normally growing day
3 – embryos regardless of their position in the mitotic cell cycle. Furthermore, routine application of these rapid methods
should make PGD even more affordable for translocation carriers enrolled in IVF programs

Harmonic mappings have been recently investigated from the perspective of geometric function theory. These mappings are important in the study of minimal surfaces. Although harmonic mappings need not be analytic, they have been studied as generalizations of conformal mappings. The seminal works of Clunie and Sheil-Small [4] and Sheil-Small [B] showed that while certain classical results for conformal mappings have analogues for harmonic mappings, many other basic questions remain unsolved
Knowledge and Attitudes of GPs in Saxony-Anhalt concerning the Psychological Aspects of Bronchial Asthma: A Questionnaire Study
Bronchial Asthma is a worldwide condition with particularly high prevalence in first world countries. The reasons are multifactorial but a neglected area is the psychological domain. It is well known that heavy emotions can trigger attacks and that depression negatively affects treatment outcomes. It is also known that personality type has a greater effect on disease prevalence than in many other conditions. However, many potential psychological treatments are hardly considered, neither in treatment guidelines nor in reviews by asthma specialists. Moreover, there is very little research concerning the beliefs and practices of doctors regarding psychological treatments. Using a questionnaire survey we ascertained that local GPs in Saxony-Anhalt have reasonably good knowledge about the psychological elements of asthma; a third consider it to be some of the influence (20-40% aetiology) and a further third consider it to be even more important than that (at least 40% total aetiology). Our GPs use psychosomatic counseling sometimes or usually in the areas of sport and smoking (circa 85% GPs), although less so regarding breathing techniques and relaxation (c40% usually or sometimes do this) However despite this knowledge they refer to the relevant clinicians very rarely (98% sometimes, usually or always refer to a respiratory physician compared with only 11% referring for psychological help)
Modeling the Effects of Doliolids on the Plankton Community Structure of the Southeastern US Continental Shelf
A model of the lower trophic levels that consists of a system of coupled ordinary differential equations was developed to investigate the time-dependent behavior of doliolid populations associated with upwelling features on the outer southeastern US continental shelf. Model equations describe the interactions of doliolids with two phytoplankton size fractions, five copepod developmental stages and a detrital pool. Additional equations describe nitrate and ammonia. Model dynamics are based primarily upon data obtained from field and laboratory experiments for southeastern US continental shelf plankton populations. Variations on a reference simulation, which represents average upwelling conditions without doliolids, were carried out to determine the effect of inclusion of doliolids, temperature and nutrient variations, and variations in ambient food concentrations on the basic plankton community structure. These simulations provide a measure of the role of environmental versus biological interactions in structuring the planktonic food web on the southeastern US continental shelf. Simulations show that the copepod population is significantly reduced when doliolids are present. This happens primarily as a result of direct predation of the doliolids on copepod eggs and juveniles as opposed to an increase in competition for phytoplankton, the primary food source. Additional simulations show that the cooler temperatures associated with the newly upwelled water temporarily decrease the growth rates of the doliolids and copepods, bestowing an even greater advantage on the rapidly reproducing doliolids
Ultraviolet Imaging of the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae
We have used the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope to obtain deep far-UV (1620
Angstrom), 40' diameter images of the prototypical metal-rich globular cluster
47 Tucanae. We find a population of about 20 hot (Teff > 9000 K) objects near
or above the predicted UV luminosity of the hot horizontal branch (HB) and
lying within two half-light radii of the cluster center. We believe these are
normal hot HB or post-HB objects rather than interacting binaries or blue
stragglers. IUE spectra of two are consistent with post-HB phases. These
observations, and recent HST photometry of two other metal-rich clusters,
demonstrate that populations with rich, cool HB's can nonetheless produce hot
HB and post-HB stars. The cluster center also contains an unusual diffuse
far-UV source which is more extended than its V-band light. It is possible that
this is associated with an intracluster medium, for which there was earlier
infrared and X-ray evidence, and is produced by C IV emission or scattered

The Ammount of Interstellar Carbon Locked in Solid Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon
We review the literature and present new experimental data to determine the
amount of carbon likely to be locked in form of solid hydrogenated amorphous
carbon (HAC) grains. We conclude on the basis of a thorough analysis of the
intrinsic strength of the C-H stretching band at 3.4 micron that between 10 and
80 ppM H of carbon is in the form of HAC grains. We show that it is necessary
to know the level of hydrogenation (H/C) of the interstellar HAC to determine
more precisely the amount of carbon it ties up. We present optical constants,
photoluminescence spectroscopy, and IR absorption spectroscopy for a particular
HAC sample that is shown to have a 3.4 micron absorption feature that is
quantatively consistent with that observed in the diffuse interstellar medium.Comment: This paper is 14 pages long with 5 figures and will appear in the 1
