    Ventilation of the North Atlantic Ocean during the Last Glacial Maximum: A comparison between simulated and observed radiocarbon ages

    The distribution of radiocarbon during simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum with a coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice model is compared with sediment core measurements from the equatorial Atlantic Ceara Rise, Blake Ridge, Caribbean Sea, and South China Sea. During these simulations we introduce a perturbation of North Atlantic freshwater fluxes leading to varying strengths of the Atlantic meridional overturning. The best fit with the observations is obtained for an overturning weakened by 40% compared with today. Further, we simulate the phenomenon of an “age reversal” found in deep sea corals, but we suggest that this indicates rather a sudden interruption of deep water formation instead of an increase in ventilation, which was suggested earlier

    A search for massive neutral bosons in orthopositronium decay

    We have searched for an exotic decay of orthopositronium into a single photon and a short-lived neutral boson in the hitherto unexplored mass region above 900 keV/c2{\rm keV}/{\it c}^{2}, by noting that this decay is one of few remaining candidates which could explain the discrepancy of the orthopositronium decay-rate. A high-resolution measurement of the associated photon energy spectrum was carried out with a germanium detector to search for a sharp peak from this two-body decay. Our negative result provides the upper-limits of\mbox{ }2.0×10−42.0 \times 10^{-4} on the branching ratio of such a decay in the mass region from 847 to 1013 keV/c2{\rm keV}/{\it c}^{2}, and excludes the possibility of this decay mode explaining the discrepancy in the orthopositronium decay-rate.Comment: a LaTeX file (text 7 pages) and a uuencoded gz-compressed PostScript file (text 7 pages + figures 4 pages

    Two-loop corrections to the decay rate of parapositronium

    Order α2\alpha^2 corrections to the decay rate of parapositronium are calculated. A QED scattering calculation of the amplitude for electron-positron annihilation into two photons at threshold is combined with the technique of effective field theory to determine an NRQED Hamiltonian, which is then used in a bound state calculation to determine the decay rate. Our result for the two-loop correction is 5.1243(33)5.1243(33) in units of (α/π)2(\alpha/\pi)^2 times the lowest order rate. This is consistent with but more precise than the result 5.1(3)5.1(3) of a previous calculation.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figure

    Pricing Bodies: A Feminist New Materialist Approach to the Relations Between the Economic and Socio-Cultural

    Arguments that the economic and socio-cultural should be understood as relational and intertwined, and that price involves a reciprocal relationship between the economic and socio-cultural, are increasingly prevalent in the social sciences. I develop these notions of relationality and reciprocation through a feminist new materialist perspective, which emphasises the entanglement of and intra-action between what might usually be seen as independent and autonomous entities. To do this, I focus on a range of recent body-image initiatives, led by government, corporate and non-profit organisations, which aim to improve girls’ and young women’s levels of confidence and self-esteem. I explore how feminist theory tends to see such initiatives in terms of the expansion of the economic sphere into the socio-cultural, which involves a tainting or contamination of embodiment and feeling. Rather than dispute these arguments, I take seriously theories and practices from cultural economy that see the economic and socio-cultural as co-constitutive. I augment these ideas with a feminist new materialist approach and argue that the economic and socio-cultural are in intra-active relations: they do not precede or exist apart from each other. In doing so, I consider how body-image initiatives can be understood as phenomena produced through these entangled intra-active relations, and offer an understanding of pricing as a simultaneously socio-cultural and economic process, where value and values become. I also raise questions regarding how, ethically and politically, boundary making and unmaking can be conceived, and how despite being in entangled relations, asymmetries between economic and socio-cultural relations may be approached

    Semi-classical equation of state and specific heats for neutron-star inner crust with proton shell corrections

    An approach to the equation of state for the inner crust of neutron stars based on Skyrme-type forces is presented. Working within the Wigner-Seitz picture, the energy is calculated by the TETF (temperature-dependent extended Thomas-Fermi) method, with proton shell corrections added self-consistently by the Strutinsky-integral method. Using a Skyrme force that has been fitted to both neutron matter and to essentially all the nuclear mass data, we find strong proton shell effects: proton numbers ZZ = 50, 40 and 20 are the only values possible in the inner crust, assuming that nuclear equilibrium is maintained in the cooling neutron star right down to the ambient temperature. Convergence problems with the TETF expansion for the entropy, and our way of handling them, are discussed. Full TETF expressions for the specific heat of inhomogeneous nuclear matter are presented. Our treatment of the electron gas, including its specific heat, is essentially exact, and is described in detail.Comment: 41 pages, 6 figure

    The "recoil" correction of order mα6m \alpha^6 to hyperfine splitting of positronium ground state

    The "recoil" correction of order mα6m \alpha^6 to the hyperfine splitting of positronium ground state was found. The formalism employed is based on the noncovariant perturbation theory in QED. Equation for two-particle component of full (many-body) wave function is used, in which effective Hamiltonian depends on the energy of a system. The effective Hamiltonian is not restricted to the nonrelativistic region, so there is no need in any regularization. To evaluate integrals over loop momenta, they are divided into "hard" and "soft" parts, coming from large and small momenta respectively. Soft contributions were found analytically, and hard ones are evaluated by numerical integration. Some soft terms due to the retardation cancel each other. To calculate the "hard" contributions, a great number of noncovariant graphs is replaced by only a few covariant ones. The hard contribution was found in two ways. The first way is to evaluate contributions of separate graphs, using the Coulomb gauge. The second one is to calculate full hard contribution as a whole using the Feynman gauge. The final result for the "recoil" correction is 0.381(6) m\al^6 and agrees with those of previous papers. Diagram-to-diagram comparison with the revised results of Adkins&Sapirstein was done. All the results agree, so the "recoil" correction is now firmly established. This means a considerable disagreement with the experimental data.Comment: 28 pages, latex including latex figure
