In this paper we analyze the objectivity of the peer review process of research performance by research groups in the scientific and technological Valencian system, over the period 1998–2002. For that purpose, we use qualitative and quantitative indicators to assess which of them are the most important to determine a research group as excellent one, based on peer review evaluation methodology. The results show that excellence appears to be driven only by publications in SCI/SSCI and the number of sexenios, and suggest that the peer review process is not as objective as we expected.Peer reviewe

    Get PDF

13 pages, 7 tablesIn this paper we assessed the evaluation process of research groups’ performance in the region of Valencia over the period 1998-2002, and the efficiency of such groups. The efficiency is assessed through the method of data envelopment analysis (DEA). Our findings show that publications in SCI/SSCI and the number of sexenios are the most determinant indicators of excellence in a research group. In terms of efficiency, we find that excellent research groups belonging to universities, in particular those in natural science, and R&D public organizations are the most efficiency.Peer reviewe

Transition to the reference standard UNE-EN ISO 6579-1: 2017.

Motivation: Nowadays the determination of the food quality is an indispensable requirement at global level. This work focus on how the presence of microorganisms in food can be detected and verify that they ensure the minimum requirements stablished by the law. To acomplish that, government entities like ENAC (Entidad Nacional de Acreditación y Certificados) promulgate standards developed by the ISO (International Organization for Standarization). One of the most important microorganism related with foodborne diseases is Salmonella. This work aims to adapt the laboratory protocol for the detection of the former microorganism to the new standards. Methods:According to the RD 2073/2005, laboratories must adapt the research assay UNE-EN ISO 6579:2003 ,which was modified in 2017, to accomplish the reference standard for the detection of Salmonella. Those changes are not significant, as result it is not necessary to make a complete validation of our protocol; that will make the transition to the new method much easier. The schedule for this transition will be: (1) Find out the changes between the older and newer standard method, such as culture mediums, incubate periods, and changes at bioquimical and serological tests. (2) Define the confirmation test. (3) Conducting verification tests of the method in parallel with the procedure based on the old standard. (4) Perform an evaluation based on the results of the test. (5) Modification of the internal test procedure. Results and conclusion: Even though a validation has not been carried out, the analysis of a wide variety of foods for the detection of Salmonella has been performed throughout the internship. These verification tests have been carried out according to the old ISO using reference strains such as S. thyphimurium (ATCC 14028) and S. enteritidis (ATCC 13076). The procedure consists of inoculating a food sample with the target sample at a concentration of the microorganism close to the limit of detection obtained by the laboratory in its validation, being this limit below 10 CFU / 25g. Currently the laboratory is in phase no. 1. Our expectation is adapt the procedure to the new ISO before the end of the course

Adherence to the Western, Prudent and Mediterranean Dietary Patterns and Colorectal Cancer Risk: Findings from the Spanish Cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Spain)

The aim of this study was to explore the association between three previously identified dietary patterns (Western, Prudent, and Mediterranean) and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk by sex and cancer subtype. The Spanish cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study provided dietary and epidemiological information from 15,629 men and 25,808 women recruited between 1992 and 1996. Among them, 568 CRC cases and 3289 deaths were identified during a median follow-up of 16.98 years. The associations between adherence to the three dietary patterns and CRC risk (overall, by sex, and by tumour location: proximal and distal colon and rectum) were investigated by fitting multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models stratified by study centre and age. Possible heterogeneity of the effects by sex and follow-up time (1–10 vs. 10 years) was also explored. While no clear effect of the Prudent dietary pattern on CRC risk was found, a suggestive detrimental effect of the Western dietary pattern was observed, especially during the first 10 years of follow-up (HR1SD-increase (95% CI): 1.17 (0.99–1.37)), among females (HR1SD-increase (95% CI): 1.31 (1.06–1.61)), and for rectal cancer (HR1SD-increase (95% CI): 1.38 (1.03–1.84)). In addition, high adherence to the Mediterranean pattern seemed to protect against CRC, especially when restricting the analyses to the first 10 years of follow-up (HR1SD-increase (95% CI): 0.84 (0.73–0.98)), among males (HR1SD-increase (95% CI): 0.80 (0.65–0.98)), and specifically against distal colon cancer (HR1SD-increase (95% CI): 0.81 (0.63–1.03)). In conclusion, low adherence to theWestern diet and high adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern could prevent CRC, especially distal colon and rectal cancer.Autonomous community of Madrid CM/JIN/2019-042World Health OrganizationDepartment of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Imperial College LondonNIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)Health Research Fund (FIS)-Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII)Junta de AndaluciaPrincipality of AsturiasBasque GovernmentRegional Government of MurciaRegional Government of NavarraCatalan Institute of Oncology-ICO (Spain)Alcala de Henare

This final degree dissertation is a project proposal for the island of El Hierro and it is directly connected with both healthy eating habits and acquiring knowledge about eating disorders. The goal behind this project is to spread awareness among 6th grade boys from the island about the importance of healthy habits. This is important in order to avoid any possible food disorder such as anorexia and bulimia or obesity and overweight. This project will take place in the Physical Education subject in schools and during school hours. It will be divided in three modules or three educational units that the teacher of the subject will carry out. The first unit is related with diet, the second one with physical activity, and the third one with eating disorders. The students will be evaluated by both their teachers and the coordinators of the project in order to prove that they have successfully acquired the contents. They will also do self-evaluations. If the project obtains good results, it will probably continue in the years to follow

Purpose and method of study: In the present study, zinc oxide nanobars were synthesized by electrochemical method and poly(3-hexylthiophene) by template-assisted method, as well as gold nanoparticles by microwave. The three components were incorporated as part of a hybrid plasmonic solar cell, in two configurations: inverted ITO/ZnO/P3HT/Au and conventional ITO/P3HT/ZnO/Au. The nanobars and nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering. The solar cells were characterized with the use of a solar simulator and a picoammeter. Conclusions and contributions: A methodology was developed to adhere polymer nanorods, vertically aligned, on ITO glass; subsequently, ZnO nanobars were formed on the polymer matrix. Two hybrid plasmonic solar cells were fabricated in which gold nanoparticles were used as cathode; the nanoparticles were incorporated into the hybrid layer of ZnO and P3HT by electrophoretic deposition, which is presented as an alternative to the deposit of conductive metals by thermal evaporation. The basic parameters of the conventional solar cell were Voc = 200 mV, Jsc = 1.09x10-7 mA/cm2 , FF of 30%, while those of the inverted solar cell were Voc = 400 mV, Jsc = 6.95x10- 8 mA/cm2 , FF of 28%, however, the efficiencies of both were null (in the order of 10-7), due to the little contact between the different components of the cell
