Houston, Texas—A recent public opinion poll developed by Michael O. Adams, Ph.D.conducted by YouGov asked Texans their views on the overall performance of the state and a number of issues of importance including; cost of living, taxes on goods and services, support for immigration and support for diversity in the public and private sectors. The survey results provide valuable insights on what issues are most important across various demographic markers including age, race/ethnicity and party identification. As Texas gears up for the May 24, 2022 runoff election, these results help bring a deeper understanding to what Texans believe the candidates should focus on during the remainder of the campaign trail and what issues might need more attention and/or communication effort towards Texans to better understand how the state is actually approaching said issues. The 9-question public opinion poll surveyed 434 respondents between February 16-18, 2022. The survey margin of error is ±4.7%. Policy Implications Of The War In Iraq And Its Influence On The Global Market: A Public Affairs Perspective

    Get PDF
United States coalition force invaded Iraq after months of failed negotiation with the United Nation Security Council and the Iraqi government.  Many of the nations that opposed the invasion were important trading partners with the U.S.  As such, global trade relationships have been damaged in the short run.  This paper examines the impact of Iraqi war on the global market economy.  The global market performance was sluggish in the weeks preceding the war and including the cessation of the war in Iraq.  This was due to uncertainty in the price of oil and the ultimate outcome of the war.  However, markets rebounded as oil prices normalized due to the quick overthrow of Baghdad.  Furthermore, the U.S. dollar had been steadily weakening against the Euro in the months preceding the war.  Therefore, a successful completion of the Iraq war will help prevent further devaluation of the dollar

Drugs Company Profits In The United States: Are They Excessive? Evidence From Public Administration Perspectives

    Get PDF
Historically, the drug industry has been one of the most profitable in the United States of America and has been attributed to the relatively high cost of drugs compared to other developed countries. The call on drug companies to reduce the costs has increased tremendously with the industry strongly resisting, claiming costs are justified to support research and development of newer and better drugs. This debate is currently ongoing in the legislature with strong lobbying from both sides of the divide.  Hence, the main objective of this research is to determine the reasons for the high cost of prescription drugs in the United States compared to other countries and suggest ways to make drugs more affordable. The solution to the problem will most likely come from a compromise by both sides involving government funded research and production of generic drugs by companies. This would bring down the cost of drugs while ensuring continuation of research and development and guarantee reasonable profits for the drug industry

New Public Management And Service Science: Preparing Students For The 21st Century

    Get PDF
This effort will seek to discover the foundations of public management and how it relates to information technology, specifically understanding E-government and other technologies in the public domain. Public Management is the development or application of methodical and systematic techniques, often employing comparison quantification, and measurement, that are designed to make the operations of public organizations more efficient, effective and increasingly responsive. This is a considerably crisper, concise, and narrow definition compared to other definitions of public administration, and its sharper focus is attributable to the larger fields encompassing of values in addition to those of efficiency, effectiveness and responsiveness

Impact Of Race, Ethnicity, And Immigration Policy: A Politico-Economic Perspective

Recent proposals for a comprehensive immigration bill in the Senate may be based on political expediency.  Sound bites about border security, worksite enforcement, and the status of about 12 million people who are currently in the United States illegally are salient issues to many politicians and various ethnic groups.  There are over 12 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally and the majority of them are from Mexico due to their connected borders, thus making it easier access.  The government wants to form new policies and laws to control the immigration to the United States. The House of Congress passed a bill that would make illegal immigration a criminal offense and would also make it a crime to help illegal immigrants migrate to the United States. For years now, the government has been trying to form new ways to improve immigration laws and assist illegal immigrants on gaining citizenship in the United States

Risk Management In Developing Countries: Evidence From Multinational And Country Financial Risk Analysis

    Get PDF
Much better access to international financial markets has granted many benefits to developing countries, but at the same time this approach has also exposed them to the unpredictable changes of these markets.  However, the amount that can be hedged is limited because the other parties are usually given a ceiling to the total debt that they can get into with another country.  Unlike borrowers, developing countries have limited possibilities of exploiting market niches to develop their investor base. The objective of this research paper is to look at different countries such as Russia and Mexico, and also realize how economic, political, and social risks account for these developing countries foreign and public debts; and how the management of these risks are necessary to combat the overall exposures these countries come across. With a fiscal view the primary cause of monetary growth in developing economies is usually found in large financial imbalances.  The effect of inflation itself on the actual value of these countries financial deficits indicates the link between fiscal deficits, money growth, and inflation

Urban Education Reform- Case Study: North Forest Independent School District

    Get PDF
Education reformers and advocates have conducted extensive studies and produced significant research around various models of school turnaround and reform. As a case study for policy in relation to models for school district turnaround, we will explore Houston’s North Forest Independent School District (NFISD). The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, as a study of policy we will retroactively explore the key factors that led to the proposed closure of NFISD. Second, using existing strategies of school turnaround, we will explore potential models of reform that may be applied to NFISD. Third, we will discuss biases and recommendations concerning a proposed annexation of NFISD by the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and how those biases and recommendations could potentially influence policy and ultimately increase student achievement

The Consequences And Public Policy Implications Of Welfare Reform: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Welfare Reform Policy

    Get PDF
Welfare reform has been the recurrent subject of heated debate in the United States, culminating in far-reaching legislation in 1996.  Taking the measure of that legislation requires attention both to the broader context of which welfare policy is a part and to the merits of the 1996 law itself.  Ultimately, the success or failure of welfare reform, which evoked a great deal of partisan rhetoric, will be assessed on empirical rather than partisan grounds.  It cannot be determined merely by changes in the size of welfare caseloads.  It is crucial to any piece of legislation to analyze the cost in relations to its benefits.  Most importantly, we must ask: What has happened to the families and children who have left the welfare system?  Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 is a successful legislation that needs a little troubleshooting, so it will not be the failed anti-poverty prescriptio

Anemia as a risk factor and therapeutic target in heart failure

    Get PDF
Anemia has recently been recognized as an important comorbid condition and potentially novel therapeutic target in patients with heart failure (HF). Anemia is common in HF patients, with a prevalence ranging from 4% to 55% depending on the population studied. Multiple potential mechanisms of interaction exist between anemia and the clinical syndrome of HF, including hemodilution, inflammatory activation, renal insufficiency, and malnutrition. A growing body of literature from observational databases and clinical trials suggests that anemia is an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes in patients with HF. Although preliminary data suggest that treatment of anemia may result in significant symptomatic improvement in HF, aggressive treatment of anemia may also be associated with increased risk of hypertension or thrombosis. Multiple ongoing studies will provide definitive data on the balance of risks and benefits of anemia treatment in chronic HF

On Witten's Instability and Winding Tachyons

We investigate, from a spacetime perspective, some aspects of Horowitz's recent conjecture that black strings may catalyze the decay of Kaluza-Klein spacetimes into a bubble of nothing. We identify classical configurations that interpolate between flat space and the bubble, and discuss the energetics of the transition. We investigate the effects of winding tachyons on the size and shape of the barrier and find no evidence at large compactification radius that tachyons enhance the tunneling rate. For the interesting radii, of order the string scale, the question is difficult to answer due to the failure of the α′\alpha^\prime expansion.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, Late
