The Role of Sexual Communication in Committed Relationships
In this Masterâs thesis, I describe a study to understand the role that sexual communication plays within committed couple relationships. I collected data from 142 couples who completed an online survey consisting of a battery of quantitative assessments measuring relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, communication processes, and sexual communication. Using dyadic data analysis within path analysis, I observed the significant paths of influence that different types of sexual communication has within couple relationships. Findings revealed that couples who discussed sex more were more likely to be relationally and sexually satisfied. I also observed the differences in sexual communication and general communication due to the differences in their associations with sexual and relationship satisfaction, respectively. With these analyses I expand the current literature to broaden and deepen our understanding of the role that sexual communication plays in committed relationships
Studentsâ Attributions of Instructor Credibility as a Function of Instructorsâ Out-of-Class Support
This investigation examined the impact that instructor out-of-class support (OCS) and sex differences have on studentsâ perceptions of instructor credibility. Participants (N = 634) were randomly assigned to one of six experimental conditions manipulating the degree to which an instructor responds with a highly supportive, moderately supportive, or non-supportive message following a hypothetically stressful situation. Multivariate analyses revealed a two-way interaction effect of instructor OCS by student sex on perceptions of instructor credibility. Significant and meaningful main effects for instructor OCS on all three dimensions of credibility (i.e., competence, trustworthiness, and caring) were also obtained, with students attributing more credibility to highly supportive instructors than to instructors who provide only moderate or no messages of support
Undergraduate Teaching Assistants and their Use of Nonverbal Immediacy Behaviors in the Basic Communication Course
Over the past two decades, perhaps no instructional communication topic has been researched as thoroughly as teacher immediacy. However, one important area of the existing teacher immediacy literature that remains underdeveloped is how undergraduate teaching assistants enact immediacy behaviors, and how, if at all, students respond to these teaching assistants differently based on the enactment of these behaviors. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to gain a clearer understanding as to what, if any, immediacy behaviors are used by undergraduate teaching assistants in the basic communication course at a large Midwestern university. The researchers conducted 50 hours of observation in an attempt to determine the different types of immediacy behaviors being displayed by undergraduate teaching assistants in the instructional context as well as examine the effects those behaviors have on students. The results of this analysis are discussed
The 2MASS Wide-Field T Dwarf Search. IV Unting out T dwarfs with Methane Imaging
We present first results from a major program of methane filter photometry
for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. The definition of a new methane filter
photometric system is described. A recipe is provided for the differential
calibration of methane imaging data using existing 2MASS photometry. We show
that these filters are effective in discriminating T dwarfs from other types of
stars, and demonstrate this with Anglo-Australian Telescope observations using
the IRIS2 imager. Methane imaging data and proper motions are presented for ten
T dwarfs identified as part of the 2MASS "Wide Field T Dwarf Search" -- seven
of them initially identified as T dwarfs using methane imaging.
We also present near-infrared moderate resolution spectra for five T dwarfs,
newly discovered by this technique. Spectral types obtained from these spectra
are compared to those derived from both our methane filter observations, and
spectral types derived by other observers. Finally, we suggest a range of
future programs to which these filters are clearly well suited: the winnowing
of T dwarf and Y dwarf candidate objects coming from the next generation of
near-infrared sky surveys; the robust detection of candidate planetary-mass
brown dwarfs in clusters; the detection of T dwarf companions to known L and T
dwarfs via deep methane imaging; and the search for rotationally-modulated

Nematic cells with defect-patterned alignment layers
Using Monte Carlo simulations of the Lebwohl--Lasher model we study the
director ordering in a nematic cell where the top and bottom surfaces are
patterned with a lattice of point topological defects of lattice
spacing . We find that the nematic order depends crucially on the ratio of
the height of the cell to . When the system is very
well--ordered and the frustration induced by the lattice of defects is relieved
by a network of half--integer defect lines which emerge from the point defects
and hug the top and bottom surfaces of the cell. When the
system is disordered and the half--integer defect lines thread through the cell
joining point defects on the top and bottom surfaces. We present a simple
physical argument in terms of the length of the defect lines to explain these
results. To facilitate eventual comparison with experimental systems we also
simulate optical textures and study the switching behavior in the presence of
an electric field
National Outreach Programming for LandownersâNatural Resource Enterprises
We conducted a survey of Mississippi landowners to determine revenues collected and expenditures incurred during 1996-1998 for fee hunting on their properties (inflated to 2011 estimates). Study findings revealed that respondents diversified incomes derived through fee hunting enterprises on their lands. This information has been used to design a series of multi-state landowner workshops about natural resource enterprises development and conservation practices on private lands. With state and local collaborator assistance, we have conducted over 50 landowner workshops in nine U.S. states and Sweden and have received requests to expand outreach programming to other U.S. states

The Measurement of Sexual Selection Using Bateman's Principles: An Experimental Test in the Sex-Role-Reversed Pipefish Syngnathus typhle.
Angus J. Bateman's classic study of sexual selection in Drosophila melanogaster has had a major influence on the development of sexual selection theory. In some ways, Bateman's study has served a catalytic role by stimulating debate on sex roles, sexual conflict and other topics in sexual selection. However, there is still considerable disagreement regarding whether or not "Bateman's principles" are helpful in the study of sexual selection. Here, we test the idea that Bateman's principles provide the basis for a useful method to quantify and compare mating systems. In this study, we focus on the sex-role-reversed pipefish Syngnathus typhle as a model system to study the measurement of sexual selection. We set up artificial breeding assemblages of pipefish in the laboratory and used microsatellite markers to resolve parentage. Three different sex-ratio treatments (female-biased, even and male-biased) were used to manipulate the expected intensity of sexual selection. Measures of the mating system based on Bateman's principles were calculated and compared to the expected changes in the intensity of sexual selection. We also compare the results of this study to the results of a similar study of Bateman's principles in the rough-skinned newt, a species with conventional sex roles. The results of this experiment show that measures of the mating system based on Bateman's principles do accurately capture the relative intensities of sexual selection in the different treatments and species. Thus, widespread use of Bateman's principles to quantify mating systems in nature would facilitate comparative studies of sexual selection and mating system evolution
The MHD Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability III: The Role of Sheared Magnetic Field in Planar Flows
We have carried out simulations of the nonlinear evolution of the
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability for compressible
fluids in -dimensions, extending our previous work by Frank et al
(1996) and Jones \etal (1997). In the present work we have simulated flows in
the x-y plane in which a ``sheared'' magnetic field of uniform strength
``smoothly'' rotates across a thin velocity shear layer from the z direction to
the x direction, aligned with the flow field. We focus on dynamical evolution
of fluid features, kinetic energy dissipation, and mixing of the fluid between
the two layers, considering their dependence on magnetic field strength for
this geometry. The introduction of magnetic shear can allow a Cat's Eye-like
vortex to form, even when the field is stronger than the nominal linear
instability limit given above. For strong fields that vortex is asymmetric with
respect to the preliminary shear layer, however, so the subsequent dissipation
is enhanced over the uniform field cases of comparable field strength. In fact,
so long as the magnetic field achieves some level of dynamical importance
during an eddy turnover time, the asymmetries introduced through the magnetic
shear will increase flow complexity, and, with that, dissipation and mixing.
The degree of the fluid mixing between the two layers is strongly influenced by
the magnetic field strength. Mixing of the fluid is most effective when the
vortex is disrupted by magnetic tension during transient reconnection, through

Epithelial cellâderived secreted and transmembrane 1a signals to activated neutrophils during pneumococcal pneumonia
Airway epithelial cell responses are critical to the outcome of lung infection. In this study, we aimed to identify unique contributions of epithelial cells during lung infection. To differentiate genes induced selectively in epithelial cells during pneumonia, we compared genome-wide expression profiles from three sorted cell populations: epithelial cells from uninfected mouse lungs, epithelial cells from mouse lungs with pneumococcal pneumonia, and nonepithelial cells from those same infected lungs. Of 1,166 transcripts that were more abundant in epithelial cells from infected lungs compared with nonepithelial cells from the same lungs or from epithelial cells of uninfected lungs, 32 genes were identified as highly expressed secreted products. Especially strong signals included two related secreted and transmembrane (Sectm) 1 genes, Sectm1a and Sectm1b. Refinement of sorting strategies suggested that both Sectm1 products were induced predominantly in conducting airway epithelial cells. Sectm1 was induced during the early stages of pneumococcal pneumonia, and mutation of NF-kB RelA in epithelial cells did not diminish its expression. Instead, type I IFN signaling was necessary and sufficient for Sectm1 induction in lung epithelial cells, mediated by signal transducer and activator of transcription 1. For target cells, Sectm1a bound to myeloid cells preferentially, in particular Ly6GbrightCD11bbright neutrophils in the infected lung. In contrast, Sectm1a did not bind to neutrophils from uninfected lungs. Sectm1a increased expression of the neutrophil-attracting chemokine CXCL2 by neutrophils from the infected lung. We propose that Sectm1a is an epithelial product that sustains a positive feedback loop amplifying neutrophilic inflammation during pneumococcal pneumonia
