Single-crystal growth of underdoped Bi-2223
To investigate the origin of the enhanced Tc ({\approx} 110 K) of the
trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+{\delta} (Bi-2223), its
underdoped single crystals are a critical requirement. Here, we demonstrate the
first successful in-plane resistivity measurements of heavily underdoped
Bi-2223 (zero-resistivity temperatures {\approx} 20~35 K). Detailed crystal
growth methods, the annealing process, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and
magnetic susceptibility measurement results are also reported.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 27th International Symposium on

Incommensurate spin correlations induced by magnetic Fe ions substituted into overdoped Bi1.75Pb0.35Sr1.90CuO6+z
Spin correlations in the overdoped region of Bi1.75Pb0.35Sr1.90CuO6+z have
been explored with Fe-doped single crystals characterized by neutron
scattering, muon-spin-rotation (muSR) spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility
measurements. Static incommensurate spin correlations induced by the Fe spins
are revealed by elastic neutron scattering. The resultant incommensurability
delta is unexpectedly large (~0.2 r.l.u.), as compared with delta ~ 1/8 in
overdoped superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4. Intriguingly, the large delta in this
overdoped region is close to the hole concentration p. This result is
reminiscent of the delta ~ p trend observed in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4;
however, it is inconsistent with the saturation of delta in the latter compound
in the overdoped regime. While our findings in Fe-doped
Bi1.75Pb0.35Sr1.90CuO6+z support the commonality of incommensurate spin
correlations in high-Tc cuprate superconductors, they also suggest that the
magnetic response might be dominated by a distinct mechanism in the overdoped
region.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Revision in introduction, discussion, and

Hidden itinerant-spin phase in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 revealed by dilute Fe doping: A combined neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission study
We demonstrated experimentally a direct way to probe a hidden propensity to
the formation of spin density wave (SDW) in a non-magnetic metal with strong
Fermi surface nesting. Substituting Fe for a tiny amount of Cu (1%) induced an
incommensurate magnetic order below 20 K in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4
(LSCO). Elastic neutron scattering suggested that this order cannot be ascribed
to the localized spins on Cu or doped Fe. Angle-resolved photoemission
spectroscopy (ARPES), combined with numerical calculations, revealed a strong
Fermi surface nesting inherent in the pristine LSCO that likely drives this
order. The heavily-overdoped Fe-doped LSCO thus represents the first plausible
example of the long-sought "itinerant-spin extreme" of cuprates, where the
spins of itinerant doped holes define the magnetic ordering ground state. This
finding complements the current picture of cuprate spin physics that highlights
the predominant role of localized spins at lower dopings. The demonstrated set
of methods could potentially apply to studying hidden density-wave
instabilities of other "nested" materials on the verge of density wave
ordering.Comment: Abstract and discussion revised; to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Charge excitations associated with charge stripe order in the 214-type nickelate and superconducting cuprate
Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds,
LaSrNiO and 1/8-doped La(Ba, Sr)CuO
using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have
observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum
transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the
diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can
be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a
stripe-related in-gap state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Itinerant ferromagnetism in half-metallic CoS_2
We have investigated electronic and magnetic properties of the pyrite-type
CoS_2 using the linearized muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) band method. We have
obtained the ferromagnetic ground state with nearly half-metallic nature. The
half-metallic stability is studied by using the fixed spin moment method. The
non-negligible orbital magnetic moment of Co 3d electrons is obtained as in the local spin density approximation (LSDA). The calculated
ratio of the orbital to spin angular momenta / = 0.15 is
consistent with experiment. The effect of the Coulomb correlation between Co 3d
electrons is also explored with the LSDA + U method. The Coulomb correlation at
Co sites is not so large, eV, and so CoS_2 is possibly
categorized as an itinerant ferromagnet. It is found that the observed
electronic and magnetic behaviors of CoS_2 can be described better by the LSDA
than by the LSDA + U.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figure
