Family functioning but not social capital is associated with better mental health in adolescents affected by violence and displacement by armed conflict in Colombia
Background:
The effect of the Colombian armed conflict on the mental health of adolescents is still poorly understood.
Aims:
Given social interventions are most likely to inform policy, we tested whether two potential intervention targets, family functioning and social capital, were associated with mental health in Colombian adolescents, and whether this was moderated by experience of violence and displacement.
Methods:
We examined the cross-sectional association between family functioning, cognitive social capital, structural social capital and 12-month prevalence of Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) diagnosed psychiatric disorder, using data on 12 to 17-year-old adolescents (N = 1,754) from the 2015 National Mental Health Survey of Colombia, a nationally representative epidemiological study. We tested whether associations survived cumulative adjustment for demographic confounders, experience of non-specific violence and harm and displacement by armed conflict.
Results:
Neither structural nor cognitive social capital were associated with better mental health. Better family functioning was associated with reduced risk of poor mental health in an unadjusted analysis (OR 0.90 [0.85–0.96]), and after cumulative adjustments for demographic confounders (OR 0.91 [0.86–0.97]), non-specific violence and harm (OR 0.91 [0.86–0.97]) and social capital variables (OR 0.91 [0.85–0.97]). In the final model, each additional point on the family APGAR scale was associated with a 9% reduced odds of any CIDI diagnosed disorder in the last 12 months.
Conclusions:
Better family functioning was associated with better mental health outcomes for all adolescents. This effect remained present in those affected by the armed conflict even after accounting for potential confounders
Preliminary Measurements of Be-10/Be-7 Ratio in Rainwater for Atmospheric Transport Analysis
The meteoric cosmogenic beryllium has been used as an essential geophysical tracer in the analysis of atmospheric flows and erosion soils since 1960. The first measurements Be-7 and Be-10 concentrations in rainwater from Mexico, have been carried out by using gamma decay spectroscopy and AMS techniques, respectively for each isotope. With this it was possible to report a preliminar value for the Be-10/Be-7 isotopic ratio in such environmental samples. The present work described preliminary results related to rainwater collected at mountain and metropolitan areas. Results are compared with predictions and previous measurements for both radioisotopes, observing a very sensible behavior particularly for the case of Be-7 activities
Evaluación de calidad de agua en un sistema ribereño utilizado para riego agrícola de subsistencia
En la evaluación del impacto de la contaminación en el ambiente, existen diversas herramientas y técnicas que se aplican para conocer la calidad ambiental de los recursos naturales. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la calidad del agua en un sistema ribereño en San Luis Potosí, México asociado al impacto del uso agrícola, urbano e industrial. Fueron establecidos cinco puntos de muestreo asociado a diversos usos y descargas residuales en donde se evaluaron 28 muestras durante cuatro días de muestro. Estas fueron distribuidas a los 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 y 120 minutos del trayecto determinando con un medidor multiparámetro los sólidos
disueltos totales (SDT), temperatura (T), conductividad eléctrica (CE), pH y oxígeno disuelto (OD). El resultado más destacado de las 28 muestras diarias y del total de 112 que los promedios oxígeno disuelto indican condición hipoxia que indica la desaparición de organismos y especies sensibles, concluyendo que el área ribereña requiere un constante monitoreo y diversificación de parámetros para evaluar su condición para actividades agrícolas.In the assessment of the impact of pollution on the environment, there are various tools and techniques that are applied to know the environmental quality of natural resources. The objective of this work was to evaluate water quality in a river system in San Luis Potosí, Mexico associated with the impact of agricultural, urban and industrial use. Five sampling points associated to various uses and residual discharges were established where 28 samples were evaluated during four days of sampling. The total dissolved solids (SDT), temperature (T), electrical conductivity (CE), pH and dissolved oxygen (OD) were distributed at 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 minutes of the path. The most outstanding result of the 28 daily samples and the total of 112 that dissolved oxygen averages indicate hypoxia condition indicating the disappearance of sensitive organisms and species, concluding that the riparian area requires constant monitoring and diversification of parameters to evaluate agricultural activities.Fil: Alcalá Jáuregui, J. Total and Monomethyl Mercury in Fog Water from the Central California Coast
[1] Total mercury (HgT) and monomethyl mercury (MMHg) concentrations in fog collected from 4 locations in and around Monterey Bay, California during June-August of 2011 were 10.7 ± 6.8 and 3.4 ± 3.8 ng L−1respectively. In contrast, mean HgT and MMHg concentrations in rain water from March-June, 2011 were 1.8 ± 0.9 and 0.1 ± 0.04 ng L−1 respectively. Using estimates of fog water deposition from 6 sites in the region using a standard fog water collector (SFC), depositions of HgT and MMHg via fog were found to range from 42–4600 and 14–1500 ng m−2 y−1, which accounted for 7–42% of HgT and 61–99% of MMHg in total atmospheric deposition (fog, rain, and dry deposition), estimated for the coastal area. These initial measurements suggest that fog precipitation may constitute an important but previously overlooked input of MMHg to coastal environments. Preliminary comparisons of these data with associated chemical, meteorological and oceanic data suggest that biotically formed MMHg from coastal upwelling may contribute to the MMHg in fog water
Estudio Preliminar Sobre La Decoloración Del Residual Líquido De La Producción De Papel Mediante Ozonización
Preliminarily, the relationship between Color Reduction (%RC), Total Suspended Solids concentration (SST), and as independent variable, the time of Ozone Oxidation Process, was evaluated with reference values of DQO of the black liquor adjusting its concentration from SST to 300 and 50mg/dm3. A batch reactor of 12,60dm3, an effective height of 3,2dm and an ozone generating device from SEFILTRA company (air flow of 2dm3/min, c(O3) of 9,50mg/dm3 with a O3(g) production 19mg/min) was used. The polynomic correlation was determined from 192 data sets with satisfactory adjustment level (R=0,92; p <0,001). Although, preliminarily, the DQO reduction (%RDQO) was not included in the polynomial relationship, it can be concluded that: a) The %RC and %RDQO is reduced when color and DQO increases from the ozonized sample at same time intervals; this reduction is greater when the SST levels of the ozonized sample increases. b) The %RC and %RDQO decrease when the SST level of the ozonized sample increases. c) Depending on the initial color, of the DQO and of the SST level of the sample, values from 10 to 53 %Rc were obtained after 10 min, and of 66 to 94 %Rc after 60 min

EL ENTORNO VIRTUAL PARA LA INVESTIGACIÓN CIENTÍFICA Y SUS DIMENSIONES. APUNTES PARA LA FORMACIÓN DE HABILIDADES INVESTIGATIVAS
In the virtualization of university educational processes is analyzed by the Technology Education or Educational Technology, because it includes professional training using ICTs. Among its directions is the formation of investigative skills in virtual environments. In this paper a characterization of the Virtual Environments for the Scientific Investigation is made and it is approached which aspects have to be taken into account to structure it in function of the formation of investigative abilities in university students.La virtualización de los procesos educativos universitarios es objeto de análisis de la Tecnología de la Educación o Tecnología Educativa, pues comprende la formación del profesional mediante el uso de las TICs. En este sentido, entre sus direcciones se encuentran, la formación de habilidades investigativas en ambientes virtuales. En el artículo se realiza una caracterización de los Entornos Virtuales para la Investigación Científica y se aborda que aspectos han de tenerse en cuenta para estructurarlo en función de la formación de habilidades investigativas en estudiantes universitarios
Evaluation of chemical resistance inducers in maradol papaya against Phytophthora nicotianae var. parasitica
Objective: To test the efficiency of four chemical resistance inducers in Maradol papaya, to reduce the infections of Phytophthora nicotianae var. parasitica in rainfed crops.
Design / methodology / approach: Three doses of each of four resistance inducers were tested in 60-day-old papaya plants in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design, with four replications and 10 plants as experimental plot. The inoculations with mycelium discs were made three days after the application of the treatments with the inducers, including negative and positive control treatments to evaluate the efficiency applying the Abbott formula.
Results: The four chemical inducers (sodium silicate (SS), potassium silicate (SP), potassium phosphite (FP) and acibenzolar-s-methyl (ASM)) presented statistically differences to the negative control (P <0.0001 **). The inductors SS at 1%, SP 1%, FP 0.35% and ASM 0.1 mM showed greater effectiveness (81.2, 75.9, 74.7 and 74.0%, respectively).
Study limitations/implications: The effective concentrations retained were tested in a single application, and their durability is not known, so it should be expanded on this point, but it can be an alternative for repeated use after transplantation.
Findings/conclusions: the optimal concentrations of PS, SS, PF and ASM which respond against Phytopthora, which must to reduce damage in rainfed planting.Objective: To test the efficiency of four chemical resistance inducers on Maradol papaya to reduce Phytopthora nicotianae var. parasitica infections in rainfed crops at Chontalpa, Tabasco, Mexico.

Predictors of Compliance with COVID-19 Guidelines Across Countries: The role of social norms, moral values, trust, stress, and demographic factors
Despite the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, it provided the opportunity to investigate factors associated with compliance with public health measures that could inform responses to future pandemics. We analysed cross-country data (k = 121, N = 15,740) collected one year into the COVID-19 pandemic to investigate factors related to compliance with COVID-19 guidelines. These factors include social norms, moral values, trust, stress, and demographic factors. We found that social norms to follow preventive measures were positively correlated with compliance with local prevention guidelines. Compliance was also predicted by concern about the moral value of harm and care, trust in government and the scientific community, stress, and demographic factors. Finally, we discuss country-level differences in the associations between predictors and compliance. Overall, results indicate that the harm/care dimension of moral foundations and trust are critical to the development of programs and policies aimed at increasing compliance with measures to reduce the spread of disease
