Ocorrência de tripanosomas em bovinos e ovinos na Região Amazônica

An unknown disease was observed by the authors, attacking cattle and sheep, in the State of Pará and in Amapá Federal Territory, in Brazil. A description is made of the disease involved. The region was studied as a whole, with particular reference to the farms visited. Reference is made to symptoms observed, to laboratory tests, and to the various treatments tentatively made. The association between climate and other environmental conditions, including the presence of blood-sucking insects, symptoms, reproductions of the disease, response to treatments applied, detection by the authors of trypanosomas in stained bood smears and blood unstained film, and the reference, 1946, by a Veterinarian working for Brazil Federal Ministry of Agriculture to a diagnosis made by him, have permitted the authors to admit, that the disease involved was a trypanosomiasis, possibly caused by Trypanosoma vivax. Recommendation is made in order that systematic research work go on for throwing some light on different trypanosomiasis in animal species having economic importance, with emphasis on cattle, sheep and domestic buffalo, in Amazonian Region, not only in Brazil, but in all ecologically similar regions in the neighbouring countries.Uma doença desconhecida dos criadores foi verificada em bovinos e ovinos no Estado do Pará e Território Federal do Amapá. A associação das condições climáticas com a presença de insetos hematófagos como prováveis vetores, os sintomas, a reprodução da doença por inoculações, as respostas a tratamentos e a verificação em presença de tripanosomas em estiramentos sanguíneos corados e em preparação de sangue a fresco, permitiram admitir ser a doença tripanosomíase, causada possivelmente por Ttypanosoma vivax. É recomendável que se realizem pesquisas sistemáticas para esclarecimento dos aspectos de tripanosomíase em animais de interesse econômico, sobretudo bovinos, ovinos e bubalinos, na Região Amazônica, tanto no Brasil, como nos países vizinhos
