    Dueling Nationalities: Dual Citizenship, Dominant and Effective Nationality, and the Case of Anwar al-Aulaqi

    This Comment argues that when hearing a case involving a suspected terrorist who holds dual citizenship, a domestic court should first determine, as a threshold matter, the dominant and effective nationality of the accused. This determination is significant because a dominant foreign national can essentially be treated as a non-citizen, for the purposes of adjudication, and may not be entitled to the full rights and protections of domestic citizenship

    The Pierre Auger Observatory: Results on Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

    The focus of this article is on recent results on ultra-high energy cosmic rays obtained with the Pierre Auger Observatory. The world's largest instrument of this type and its performance are described. The observations presented here include the energy spectrum, the primary particle composition, limits on the fluxes of photons and neutrinos and a discussion of the anisotropic distribution of the arrival directions of the most energetic particles.     The objective of this study was to assess the effect of heating a mixture of grain legumes based on sweet lupins, faba beans, and peas (1:1:1, toasted “LEGUMItherm ®”; untreated: “LEGUMI-mix”) on the content of metabolisable energy (ME) and precaecal digestible (pc) amino acids for broilers. The mean of amino acid digestibility of LEGUMI-mix and LEGUMI-therm was 88 and 87 %. The ME content of the mixture ranged between 11.9 (LEGUMI-therm) and 12.1 MJ/kg DM (LEGUMI-mix).     Detecting the Earliest Galaxies Through Two New Sources of 21cm Fluctuations

    The first galaxies that formed at a redshift ~20-30 emitted continuum photons with energies between the Lyman-alpha and Lyman limit wavelengths of hydrogen, to which the neutral universe was transparent except at the Lyman-series resonances. As these photons redshifted or scattered into the Lyman-alpha resonance they coupled the spin temperature of the 21cm transition of hydrogen to the gas temperature, allowing it to deviate from the microwave background temperature. We show that the fluctuations in the radiation emitted by the first galaxies produced strong fluctuations in the 21cm flux before the Lyman-alpha coupling became saturated. The fluctuations were caused by biased inhomogeneities in the density of galaxies, along with Poisson fluctuations in the number of galaxies. Observing the power-spectra of these two sources would probe the number density of the earliest galaxies and the typical mass of their host dark matter halos. The enhanced amplitude of the 21cm fluctuations from the era of Lyman-alpha coupling improves considerably the practical prospects for their detection.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, ApJ, published.     Deep far infrared ISOPHOT survey in "Selected Area 57", I. Observations and source counts

    We present here the results of a deep survey in a 0.4 sq.deg. blank field in Selected Area 57 conducted with the ISOPHOT instrument aboard ESAs Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at both 60 um and 90 um. The resulting sky maps have a spatial resolution of 15 x 23 sq.arcsec. per pixel which is much higher than the 90 x 90 sq.arcsec. pixels of the IRAS All Sky Survey. We describe the main instrumental effects encountered in our data, outline our data reduction and analysis scheme and present astrometry and photometry of the detected point sources. With a formal signal to noise ratio of 6.75 we have source detection limits of 90 mJy at 60 um and 50 mJy at 90 um. To these limits we find cumulated number densities of 5+-3.5 per sq.deg. at 60 um and 14.8+-5.0 per sq.deg.at 90 um. These number densities of sources are found to be lower than previously reported results from ISO but the data do not allow us to discriminate between no-evolution scenarios and various evolutionary models.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Constraints on holographic dark energy models using the differential ages of passively evolving galaxies

    Using the absolute ages of passively evolving galaxies observed at different redshifts, one can obtain the differential ages, the derivative of redshift zz with respect to the cosmic time tt (i.e. dz/dt{\rm d} z/{\rm d}t). Thus, the Hubble parameter H(z)H(z) can be measured through the relation H(z)=(dz/dt)/(1+z)H(z)=-({\rm d} z/{\rm d}t)/(1+z). By comparing the measured Hubble parameter at different redshifts with the theoretical one containing free cosmological parameters, one can constrain current cosmological models. In this paper, we use this method to present the constraint on a spatially flat Friedman-Robert-Walker Universe with a matter component and a holographic dark energy component, in which the parameter cc plays a significant role in this dark energy model. Firstly we consider three fixed values of cc=0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 in the fitting of data. If we set cc free, the best fitting values are c=0.26c=0.26, Ωm0=0.16\Omega_{\rm m0}=0.16, h=0.9998h=0.9998. It is shown that the holographic dark energy behaves like a quintom-type at the 1σ1\sigma level. This result is consistent with some other independent cosmological constrains, which imply that c<1.0c<1.0 is favored. We also test the results derived from the differential ages using another independent method based on the lookback time to galaxy clusters and the age of the universe.     Saturation in heteronuclear photoassociation of 6Li7Li

    We report heteronuclear photoassociation spectroscopy in a mixture of magneto-optically trapped 6Li and 7Li. Hyperfine resolved spectra of the vibrational level v=83 of the singlet state have been taken up to intensities of 1000 W/cm^2. Saturation of the photoassociation rate has been observed for two hyperfine transitions, which can be shown to be due to saturation of the rate coefficient near the unitarity limit.
