Foreign Direct Investment and Labour: The Case of Indian Manufacturing

    Get PDF
This paper makes an attempt to evaluate the employment and wage effects of FDI in Indian manufacturing. The findings suggest that foreign firms do not have any adverse effects on the manufacturing employment in India as compared to their domestic counterparts while they significantly pay relatively higher to their workers. Therefore this study tends to imply that labour in fact had benefited from foreign investment in India.FDI; Labour; Wages; Employment

Tuberculosis and metastatic carcinoma coexistence in axillary lymph node: A case report

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Coexistence of cancer and tuberculosis in axillary lymph nodes is rare. Only seven cases have been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We report here a case of infiltrating ductal carcinoma breast metastasizing to the axillary lymph node along with tubercular granuloma in the same lymph node without primary mammary or pulmonary tuberculosis. CONCLUSION: Primary tuberculosis coexisting with carcinoma is of rare occurrence. A possibility should always be borne in mind especially in patients from endemic areas

International Journal Of Information Management, 68(February), 1-17. [102569]. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijinfomgt.2022.102569. Funding: This work was supported by national funds through FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) under the project - UIDB/04152/2020 - Centro de Investigação em Gestão de Informação (MagIC).Videoconferencing (VC) applications (apps) have surged in popularity as an alternative to face-to-face communications especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although VC apps offer myriad benefits, it has caught much media attention owing to concerns of privacy infringements. This study examines the key determinants of working professional’s intentions to use VC apps in the backdrop of this conflicting duality. A conceptual research model is proposed that is based on theoretical foundations of privacy calculus and extended with conceptualizations of mobile users’ information privacy concerns (MUIPC), trust, technicality, ubiquity, as well as theoretical underpinnings of social presence theory. Structural equation modelling (SEM) is used to empirically test the model using data collected from 487 working professionals. For researchers, the study offers insights on the extent to which social richness and technological capabilities afforded by the virtual environment serve as predictors of the continuance intentions of using VC apps. Researchers may also find the model applicable to other studies of surveillance-based technologies. For practitioners, key recommendations pivotal to the design and development mobile video-conferencing apps are presented to ensure higher acceptance and continued usage of VC apps in professional settings.preprintauthorsversionepub_ahead_of_prin

Silhouette of cardiac impairment in diabetic patients at a medical college in Rewa district

Background: The modern technology (TMT) had helped to detect cardiac impairment in diabetes patients relative to past. This study had attempted to use modern tools for detection of cardiac impairment in patients who attended OPD in a medical college of Rewa district. Objectives of the study was to evaluate cardiac dysfunction and factors associated with cardiac dysfunction (using values of TMT) in diabetic patients. Methods: A descriptive study was done with help of recording history of variables like smoking, alcohol, BMI, HBA1C value, cholesterol level and others. Chi square was done to assess test of significance. Results: Diastolic dysfunction was more in patients with diabetic complications than those without diabetic complications. Most patients having peripheral neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy had diastolic dysfunction. Patients had also shown high incidence of positivity to TMT. Half of the patients (50%) positive results for stress test were higher with cases who led a sedentary life style (13.64%). Most of patients (70%) had serum. cholesterol level less than 200 mg/dl but the positive results for stress test were higher in patients with Serum. cholesterol level 200 to 239 mg/dl.  Conclusions: The study could shower light on the conclusion that left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients is more relative to systolic dysfunction

    Determinants of dysphagia following stroke

Background: Swallowing is affected following stroke. Many studies focus on various aspects of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) following stroke. However, there are not many studies on the determinants of dysphagia following stroke. The aim of the present study is to establish the association between various factors with the severity of dysphagia. Methods: After screening for Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability (MASA),110 patients, post-stroke were selected using consecutive sampling to assess the common risk factors, namely the presence of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, hypertension, alcohol usage and smoking habits. Additionally, other variables such as age, gender, type of lesion, side of lesion, tobacco chewing, speech disorders, arterial dysfunction, lobe involvement and Brunnstrom’s stages, were also evaluated using a structured interview method. c2 (chi-squared) analysis was carried out to find out the association between the selected determinants and severity of dysphagia following stroke. Results: It was found that age and Brunnstrom’s stages are the determinants of dysphagia, as analysis showed a strong association with a p value < 0.001. A marginal association between post-stroke dysphagia and type of lesion with a p value of 0.056 was also observed. Conclusions: Among 15 factors evaluated, age, type of lesion and Brunnstrom’s stages showed a significant association with the severity of dysphagia following stroke. This study advocates early dysphagia management for elderly patients with high Brunnstrom’s grading, for those who are not expected to spontaneously recover following stroke, and for earlier and better community rehabilitation. Interpreting the Demand for Koshala State in Orissa: Development versus Underdevelopment

    Get PDF
This paper examines the rising demand for Koshala state in Orissa and looks for factors responsible for it. It found that the issue of underdevelopment and state apathy-cum-failures in addressing the same has been the single most important factor contributed for the demand for Koshala state. The study prescribes suitable policies for Orissa government to adopt to contain the demand for this new state
