Macroscopic thermodynamics of equilibrium characterized by power-law canonical distributions
Macroscopic thermodynamics of equilibrium is constructed for systems obeying
power-law canonical distributions. With this, the connection between
macroscopic thermodynamics and microscopic statistical thermodynamics is
generalized. This is complementary to the Gibbs theorem for the celebrated
exponential canonical distributions of systems in contact with a heat bath.
Thereby, a thermodynamic basis is provided for power-law phenomena ubiquitous
in nature.Comment: 12 page
About the modern "experimental value" of W boson width.
It is shown that the methods which have been used up to now to determine the
width from the data confirm the SM predictions for some
combinations of various phenomenological parameters, however, they do not give
an independent value for the width. Moreover, the accuracy that could be
achieved in future experimental checks of SM predictions for such quantities is
limited by effects which require detailed theoretical study.Comment: Latex, 8 pages
Sex Role Orientation among Selected Student Counsellors in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria
The study focused on the sex-role status of selected student counsellors in Lagos metropolis. A total of 60 participants, drawn from the University of Lagos and Lagos State University were involved in the study. Bem's Sex-Role Inventory BSRI (1994) was used to collect relevant data. Three assumptions were tested using simple percentage and the Chi-square test at the 0.05 alpha level. The findings, the subjects appeared sex-stereotypic, neither did their gender nor parental education influence their sex-role status. Based on the findings, certain recommendations were made. Gauge theory of self-similar system
On the basis of a dilatation invariant Lagrangian, governed equations are
determined for probability density and gauge potential of the non-stationary
self-similar stochastic system. It is shown that an automodel regime is
observed at small time interval determined by the Tsallis' parameter . An
exponential falling down happens at large time where the dilatation parameter
and the partial scale tend to constant values.Comment: 8 pages, LaTe
On Observing Top Quark Production at the Tevatron
A technique for separating top quark production from Standard Model
background events is introduced. It is applicable to the channel in which one
top quark decays semi-leptonically and its anti-quark decays hadronically into
three jets, or vice versa. The method is shown to discriminate dramatically
between Monte Carlo generated events with and without simulated top quarks of
mass around 120 GeV and above. The simulations were performed with CDF detector
characteristics incorporated, showing that the method is applicable to existing
data.Comment: 8 pages, TUFTS-TH-92-G01 (Two minor TeX mistakes corrected
On a Renormalization Group Approach to Dimensional Crossover
A recently proposed renormalization group approach to dimensional crossover
in quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets is improved and then shown to
give identical results, in some cases, to those obtained earlier.Comment: 8 pages, Rev Tex, no figure
Z-graded weak modules and regularity
It is proved that if any Z-graded weak module for vertex operator algebra V
is completely reducible, then V is rational and C_2-cofinite. That is, V is
regular. This gives a natural characterization of regular vertex operator
algebras.Comment: 9 page
Negative s and Light New Physics
Motivated by the difference between SLD's recent measurement of ALR and the
corresponding LEP results, we explore which kinds of new particles can (1)
contribute dominantly to new physics through oblique corrections, (2) produce
negative values for S and T, and (3) not be in conflict with any other
experiments, on or off the Z resonance. We are typically led to models which
involve new particles which are not much heavier than MZ/2, and so which may
also have implications for other experiments in the near future. For such light
particles, we show how the oblique-parameter analysis of purely Z-pole data
requires the interpretation of the data in terms of modified parameters, S' and
T', whose difference from S and T improves the available parameter space of the
models.Comment: plain TeX, 16 pages, 6 figures attached as a uuencoded file,

Detection of spin polarization with a side coupled quantum dot
We propose realistic methods to detect local spin polarization, which utilize
a quantum dot side coupled to the target system. By choosing appropriate states
in the dot, we can put spin selectivity to the dot and detect spins in the
target with small disturbance. We also present an experiment which realizes one
of the proposed spin detection schemes in magnetic fields.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
