A gauge appreciation of developments in particle physics - 1979

    Get PDF
The author discusses the question: Can we now indeed chart the course of the subject nearly up to Planck energies, of the order of 2*10/sup -5/ grams (1.2*10/sup 19/ GeV)? If so, is there likely to be a long stretching Grand Plateau, unbroken by any high peaks of new physics, which is predictable on the basis of the gauge revolution of this decade?

Characterization of Ti-6Al-4V Cellular Structures for Bone Scaffolds Application

    Get PDF
Additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V cellular structures are the most popular metallic choices for bonetissue engineering (BTE) applications. In this work, laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF) technologywas employed to fabricate Ti-6Al-4V cellular structures with geometries mimicking human cancellousbone properties. This study introduces novel laser scanning strategies with their associated laserbased PBF processing parameters for the fabrication of fine resolution Ti-6Al-4V cellular structureswith tailored mechanical properties to improve their mechanical performance. Two distinct designedgeometries, diamond and dodecahedron, in four different pore sizes were manufactured byemploying three different laser-based PBF scanning strategies in combination with various laserpower and scanning speeds while the laser spot size (~80μm), average powder size (34μm), andlayer thickness (30μm) remained unchanged throughout the study. The observed finest resolution ofstruts for the manufactured cellular structures was 120μm. Later, correlations between laser-basedPBF processing parameters/scanning strategies and physical/mechanical properties wereinvestigated in this study. The properties of several fabricated dodecahedron structuresdemonstrated the ability to mimic human cancellous bone properties by exhibiting compressivestrength, modulus of elasticity, and porosity in the range of 0.1-30MPa, 0.01-3GPa, and 72.6-87.4%,respectively. The concluding remarks on conceivable propriety for BTE applications incorporated thesets of scanning strategies and particular unit cell sizes of dodecahedron cellular structure

Assessment of Heavy Metals Pollution in Dumpsites in Ilorin Metropolis

    Get PDF
Speciation and distribution of heavy metals in soil controls the degree to which metals and their compounds are mobile, extractable, and plant available. Eight strategically located dumpsites in Ilorin metropolis (an averagely growing city and a state capital) were chosen for dumpsites-soil characteristics study. Both the estimated total and potentially available metals were studied using EPA 1311 and Tessier’s et al methods respectively. It wasobserved that the groundwater is vulnerable to contamination as no treated basement to adsorb toxic metals was provided for in the sites. About 70% of Mn, Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb were found in the exchangeable bound to carbonate and bound to iron/manganese oxide fractions. These fractions represent the mobile and lethal portion of the total metals to the ecosystem. The metal enrichment factor revealed that Zn, Cd and Pb were of anthropogenic source while Fe is of natural and anthropogenic sources. The dumpsites in Ilorin, therefore pose negative consequences on the soil and groundwater environmen

Pengaruh Politik Dalam Pembentukan Hukum Di Indonesia

This article examines how the politics influence legal development in Indonesia. Politics and law are two things that influence each other. In the process of establishing the rule of law by political institutions, the role of political forces who sit in the political institutions are very decisive. When the position of law is more determinant than politics, then political activities are regulated by and must comply to legal rules. On the other hand, when politics is more determinant than law, then law is a product of political wills that interacts each other and even competes each other. However, an ideal system is a system when both law and politics are in balance in terms of determination. In such condition, an order may be achieved

Kraft lignin valorization by hydrotreatment over Mo-based sulfided catalysts

    Get PDF
The production of green fuels and chemicals from bio-based feedstock can suppress the dependency on fossil resources and help mitigate global climate challenges. Kraft lignin is a thermochemically modified natural lignin obtained from the pulping process as a byproduct. It is an underutilized fraction, often used to recover heat and energy in the current industrial practice. Chemically, it is highly rich in aromatics and thus has a huge potential to provide platform chemicals/fuels. However, the major challenge in the valorization of Kraft lignin is its recalcitrance to depolymerization due to the presence of strong interunit carbon-carbon linkages. Also, upon depolymerization, active monomeric fragments undergo repolymerization reactions forming undesired solid residue/char, thus making the transformation highly challenging. In this context, Mo-based sulfide catalysts being sulfur tolerant and active for removing heteroatom-such as S, N, O, metals have been modified and studied with the aim to elucidate the selective cleavage of common lignin linkages, the hydrotreating potential of Kraft lignin, and upgrading of lignin derived bio-oil. The reactivity of lignin dimers, representing common lignin linkages, shows that NiMo sulfides over ultra-stable Y-zeolite support, with a higher amount of Br\uf8nsted acidity, can efficiently cleave both etheric and carbon-carbon linkages and yield deoxygenated aromatics and cycloalkanes by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Such hydrogenolysis, hydrocracking, and deoxygenation activity were also found to vary with the silica/alumina ratio of the Y-zeolites. The optimum activity was obtained with catalysts having a suitable balance of acidic and deoxygenation sites (metal sulfides). Additionally, one-pot hydrotreatment of Kraft lignin with a suitably functional catalyst shows a significant reduction in the repolymerization reactions, leading to a high yield of bio-oil rich in alkylbenzene and cycloalkane, a fraction suitable for example for jet fuel applications. Characterization reveals that the key function of a suitable catalyst is hydrogen activation at a lower temperature which facilitates stabilization of the lignin fragments, the moderate acidity of the catalysts, and high HDO activity of the catalyst. Furthermore, unsupported Ni/Mo-sulfides have been synthesized and found highly active for deoxygenation reaction and Kraft lignin hydrotreatment, resulting mainly from their defect-rich morphology.Conventional Mo-based sulfide catalysts thus can be tailored to enable their effective application in the upgrading of complex biorefinery feedstocks to value added components

The potential of geographical information system-based modelling for aquaculture development and management in South Western Bangladesh

    Get PDF
This study describes the delineation of appropriate sites for aquaculture using remote sensing, GPS and GIS. A 1996 composite Landsat TM image covering the south-western part of Bangladesh was used to identify water bodies, the extent of brackish water and associated land use features in the image. The Remote Sensing image was complemented by digitised secondary data from a range of sources, including hard copy maps to produce a GIS database which included environmental layers such as water bodies, rivers, soils, land use, temperature, rainfall, salinity and pH. The database also included infrastructural issues, such as roads, railways, processing plants, towns and cities. A series of GIS models were developed in order to identify and prioritise the most suitable areas for freshwater prawn, tilapia and carp and brackish water shrimp and crab farming. A range of scenarios for land allocations were used to develop a series of resource use models linked to likely production outcomes. Global warming and accelerated sea level rise is considered in the study area with different sea level rise scenarios of 50, 100, 150 and 200cm. The consequence of land losses and displacement of the population from the area in different situations is discussed. The economic characteristics of shrimp farming and alternative land uses in the Khulna region were also considered. Five land use options were studied based on economic output and job potential. Among these, brackish water shrimp and crab culture, moderately saline tolerant tilapia and prawn culture, fresh water carp culture and traditional rice production systems, and fresh water prawn culture performed best followed by brackish water shrimp and crab culture. This study showed the extent of potential for aquaculture in the Khulna region and further demonstrates the usefulness of GIS as an aquaculture-planning tool. Model programming was also found to be very useful tool to enabling regenerating of multiple scenarios very quickly. Overall, GIS modelling associated with remote sensing has great potential for informed decision-making in aquatic production systems and optimising management of natural resources in a region where they are already under considerable pressure. The implications for use of these systems in reducing land use conflict and sector planning for the region are discussed
