Handbook On Improved Agronomic Practices Of Groundnut Production In North East Nigeria

    Get PDF
This handbook is intended to guide farmers, extension personnel, students of agriculture and researchers in Nigeria to use improved varieties and associated production practices to increase productivity. The guide draws its lessons from the work and experiences of ICRISAT and its partners in Research for Development on crop-based systems in Nigeria. The publication of this handbook is a demonstration of effective collaboration between ICRISAT, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, National Agricultural Extension Research and Liaison Services (NAERLS), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), numerous farmersā€™ groups and Innovation Platform (IPs). The authors are grateful to the Management of these Institutes and organizations and gratefully acknowledge the work of other researchers that have helped immensely in compiling this manual

The Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program Phase 1 (AT ASP-1) of the Federal Government of Nigeria was launched m 2015 as a follow up to the previous. Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA). It is expected to create in 120.000jobs along the value chain of priority commodities and add additional 20 million metric tons of food. Project activities included thematic training, on-farm technology demonstrations, community seed production and formation of Innovation Platforms for market linkages. The project has made remarkable progress in enhancing access to quality seeds and other inputs to over 34.300 farmers while expanding knowledge of best-bet productron technologies in over 100 communities across three staple crop processing zones (SCPZ). Duiing the 2016 cropping season, farmers produced over 70,268 Mt of grains valued at Ā£i9.135billion (US$29M). The use of improved varieties increased yields by 32%. 42% and 64% in Bida-Badeggi. Kano-Jigawa and Sokoto-Kebbi SCPZ. respectively. Seed dressing increased yields by 38%. 27%. and 30% m the three SCPZs respectively, while tillage practices increased yields by 20% and 55% m Kano - Jigawa and Sokoto - Kebbi SCPZs. Through Innovation Platforms set up with other stakeholders and market linkages to large scale processors, 109.76 tons of seeds were procured and planted. Average yield obtained on the improved technologies was 1.5 tha compared to 1 1 t/ha by other farmers giving a 40% increase. A total of 1,093 women farmers comprising of about 34.2% of the total number of participating farmers benefited directly from the project. Seed fairs, rural radios and audio-visual broadcasts on improved sorghum production technologies were used to reach non-participating farmers within the zones

In vivo Trypanostatic Activity of Tephrosia linearis Extract on Trypanosoma evansi

In vivo antitrypanosomal activity of 70% methanol extract of Tephrosia linearis was evaluated. Mice infected with Trypanosoma evansi in different groups were administered 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg body weight/day of the seventy percent (v/v) (methanol/water) crude extract of T. linearis intraperitoneally. The positive control group was treated with standard drug, berenil, while the negative control was infected and treated with normal saline. Doses of 300 and 400 mg/kg bw i.p. per day were found to significantly reduce the parasite loads and sustained the animals in the respective groups up to 3 and 4 weeks beyond the experimental period. There is drop in the percentage PCV during the first six days of the treatment but this was reversed in the subsequent days, except in the negative control group. The animals administered the highest effective (trypanostatic) dose of 400 mg/kg body weight for five consecutive days prior to infection were observed to develop infection 72 h post inoculation. The LD50 determined was found to be 2800 mg/kg bw. It is obvious that, higher doses of 300 and 400 mg/kg bw has trypanostatic effect. Though, the extract could not show any prophylactic activity, further purification may possibly yield a fraction with trypanocidal effect. Network layer for cognitive radio sensor networks

    No full text
Based on recent trends, Cognitive Radio paradigm has become an integral part of future communication networks of which Wireless Sensor Network is an integral part. However, Cognitive Radio (CR) introduces critical issues that have to be addressed for communication in networks to be achieved. Routing, being the core of communication, has to be critically examined within the context of Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks. In this chapter, the authors discuss relevant issues on the topic of routing in Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks (CRSN). As a basis, a general overview of routing in the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is made. The applicability of these protocols in CRSN is discussed and the need for integrating Opportunistic Spectrum Access components into existing Wireless Sensor Network protocols is exposed. Factors affecting routing in CRSN are outlined with an emphasis on a cross layering design approach based on a generalized framework. Recent works in this respect are categorized, and finally, open issues in need for research attention are pinpointed
