Poverty and inequality in urban Sudan: policies, institutions and governance

    Get PDF
This book provides an overview of the conditions facing the urban poor in Khartoum, Sudan and explores the opportunities and constraints people of different genders, ages, wealth and social origins face in the pursuant of their livelihoods. Using an in-depth analysis, it argues that the livelihoods of poor people have been severely constrained by both formal and informal institutions that have not allowed them to access capitals and choose the way they utilize those they have. Muna A. Abdalla was born in August 1966 in Khartoum, the Capital of Sudan. After completing primary and secondary education in Sudan, she pursued her university education in Egypt, University of Zagazig, where she obtained her BSC in Science and Education. In 1989 she obtained an Advanced Diploma in Development and Adult Education, Post Graduate College, University of Khartoum, then a M.Ed. in Education, University of Manchester, UK, 1991. She worked as consultant/researcher on Africa's development challenges, poverty, gender and capacity building issues with ILO, OSSREA and the Ford Foundation in different countries. She coordinated and assisted in implementing and managing projects for UNECEF in Sudan, and worked for the Sudan Broadcasting Services and DPMF in Ethiopia.ASC – Publicaties niet-programma gebonde

On The Symplectic Two-Form of Gravity in Terms of Dirac Eigenvalues

    Get PDF
The Dirac eigenvalues form a subset of observables of the Euclidean gravity. The symplectic two-form in the covariant phase space could be expressed, in principle, in terms of the Dirac eigenvalues. We discuss the existence of the formal solution of the equations defining the components of the symplectic form in this framework.Comment: misprints corrected, final interpretation of results give

The use of EMTP for analyzing a cable terminated transformer undera lightning surge

    Get PDF
Protection of transformers and other system equipment against transient overvoltages resulting from lightning or other causes is an important consideration in power system design. For insulation co-ordination in transmission lines and substation equipment, it is necessary to accurately predict the lightning surge overvoltages that occur in power systems. The magnitude and waveshape of this overvoltage arriving at the terminating transformer is greatly affected by the use of a length of a cable connecting the transmission line to the terminating transformer. This paper is investigating the effect of this length of cable under lightning surge as it reaches the step-down transformer. The computer simulation-through EMTP-of a 345 kV line is presented and the results are analyzed aiming to obtain the reduced overvoltage at the terminating equipment and to find the optimum length and size of the cable used as a terminato

On the Dirac Eigenvalues as Observables of the on-shell N=2 D=4 Euclidean Supergravity

We generalize previous works on the Dirac eigenvalues as dynamical variables of the Euclidean gravity and N=1 D=4 supergravity to on-shell N=2 D=4 Euclidean supergravity. The covariant phase space of the theory is defined as as the space of the solutions of the equations of motion modulo the on-shell gauge transformations. In this space we define the Poisson brackets and compute their value for the Dirac eigenvalues.Comment: 10 pages, LATeX fil

Enhancement of nonclassical properties of two qubits via deformed operators

We explore the dynamics of two atoms interacting with a cavity field via deformed operators. Properties of the asymptotic regularization of entanglement measures proving, for example, purity cost, regularized fidelity and accuracy of information transfer are analyzed. We show that the robustness of a bipartite system having a finite number of quantum states vanishes at finite photon numbers, for arbitrary interactions between its constituents and with cavity field. Finally it is shown that the stability of the purity and the fidelity is improved in the absence of the deformation parameters

Angular momenta creation in relativistic electron-positron plasma

    Get PDF
Creation of angular momentum in a relativistic electron-positron plasma is explored. It is shown that a chain of angular momentum carrying vortices is a robust asymptotic state sustained by the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation characteristic to the system. The results may suggest a possible electromagnetic origin of angular momenta when it is applied to the MeV epoch of the early Universe.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure

    Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter IV.3: N=6 Chern-Simons and Strings on AdS4xCP3

We review the duality and integrability of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions and IIA superstring theory on the background AdS4xCP3. We introduce both of these models and describe how their degrees of freedom are mapped to excitations of a long-range integrable spin-chain. Finally, we discuss the properties of the Bethe equations, the S-matrix and the algebraic curve that are special to this correspondence and differ from the case of N=4 SYM theory and strings on AdS5xS5.Comment: 22 pages, see also overview article arXiv:1012.3982, v2: references to other chapters updated, v3: references added, v4: brief discussion of giant magnons added, further minor changes, published version, v5: union of v3 and v4 because changes made in v3 were accidentally lost in v

A geometric approach to time evolution operators of Lie quantum systems

Lie systems in Quantum Mechanics are studied from a geometric point of view. In particular, we develop methods to obtain time evolution operators of time-dependent Schrodinger equations of Lie type and we show how these methods explain certain ad hoc methods used in previous papers in order to obtain exact solutions. Finally, several instances of time-dependent quadratic Hamiltonian are solved.Comment: Accepted for publication in the International Journal of Theoretical Physic
