Processing and marketing of fish with special reference to export of pelagic fish and fish products
The paper describes the world tuna fishery, industry and markets and the trends for its future development. The prospects for developing a tuna export industry in Sri Lanka are discussed. Suggestions are given as to products composition, international co-operation and utilization of available processing facilities. The need for industry and export support is stressed, and it is concluded that preparations for the development should start well in time
Main-streaming participatory and cross-disciplinary approaches in animal science research in developing countries
Conventional research approaches have lost considerable momentum after their astonishing achieve-ments during the green revolution. The negative side of focusing rigorously on production improve-ment was eminent around 1980 and led to considerations of environmental, gender and equity aspects - making agricultural development much more complex than previously. In the search for new ways of addressing the persisting problems of food insecurity and malnutrition, new ways should be explored. Based on the experiences from three international, African research projects, the article argues the case of participatory action research and cross-disciplinarity as some of the key elements in future animal science research in developing countries. The benefits are outlined as well as the challenges for the researchers and the donor agencies
Classification of Minimal Separating Sets of Low Genus Surfaces
A minimal separating set in a connected topological space is a subset with the property that is disconnected, but if
is a proper subset of , then is
connected. Such sets show up in a variety of contexts. For example, in a wide
class of metric spaces, if we choose distinct points p and q, then the set of
points x satisfying d(x, p) = d(x, q) is a minimal separating set. In this
paper we classify which topological graphs can be realized as minimal
separating sets in surfaces of low genus. In general the question of whether a
graph can be embedded at all in a surface is a difficult one, so our work is
partly computational. We classify graphs embeddings which are minimal
separating in a given genus and write a computer program to find all such
embeddings and their underlying graphs.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Studies on the preparation of fish silage. 4. Economics of production
Economic aspects of producing liquid and dried silage from silver belly (Leiognathus splendens) in Sri Lanka are considered. A discounted cash flow analysis for the production of a dried fish silage/rice bran product suitable for use in compounded poultry feeds shows that the internal rate of return for a 10-year project would be between 34-77% and for a 5-year project between 26-73%. Thus it is concluded that the project would be extremely profitable
