    An approach to reducing parameter uncertainty for robotic surface assembly tasks

    In contrast to hard automation, which relies on the precise knowledge of all parameters and special-purpose machinery, the goal of flexible assembly is to overcome the inherent uncertainty in the location of the parts. The main result of this dissertation is that, for rigid, non-deformable objects, more accurate estimates of parameters, which describe their position and orientation in Cartesian space, can be obtained through active part interaction and estimation using numerical methods. If the objects have large polyhedral or convex features, the parameter estimation problem can be recasting terms of fitting the collected empirical data to a suitable geometrical model. The planning and execution steps are treated as conceptually separate from the estimation.Additionally, an algorithm for automatic conversion of a compliant path from the Cartesian to the joint space of a general-purpose, 7 degrees of freedom robotic arm is described. This allows for the assembly strategies to be planned in terms of objects'topological features in the task frame. A `back-drivable' Barrett WAM robotic arm without a force sensor was used in all experiments, and approximate compliant motion was achieved by relying on torque limits and impedance. Consequently, the primary focus is on planning, control, and assembly without force sensing. The underlying concepts, however, are much more general and could be extended to incorporate force feedback. Grasping is outside of the scope of this work, and it is assumed throughout that one of the parts is rigidly attached to the end-effector of the robot

    The Impact of Worry on Attention to Threat

    Prior research has often linked anxiety to attentional vigilance for threat using the dot probe task, which presents probes in spatial locations that were or were not preceded by a putative threat stimulus. The present study investigated the impact of worry on threat vigilance by administering this task during a worry condition and during a mental arithmetic control condition to 56 undergraduate students scoring in the low normal range on a measure of chronic worry. The worry induction was associated with faster responses than arithmetic to probes in the attended location following threat words, indicating the combined influence of worry and threat in facilitating attention. Within the worry condition, responses to probes in the attended location were faster for trials containing threat words than for trials with only neutral words, whereas the converse pattern was observed for responses to probes in the unattended location. This connection between worry states and attentional capture by threat may be central to understanding the impact of hypervigilance on information processing in anxiety and its disorders

    Pre-surgical depression and anxiety and recovery following coronary artery bypass graft surgery

    We aimed to explore the combined contribution of pre-surgical depression and anxiety symptoms for recovery following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) using data from 251 participants. Participants were assessed prior to surgery for depression and anxiety symptoms and followed up at 12 months to assess pain and physical symptoms, while hospital emergency admissions and death/major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were monitored on average 2.68 years after CABG. After controlling for covariates, baseline anxiety symptoms, but not depression, were associated with greater pain (β = 0.231, p = 0.014) and greater physical symptoms (β = 0.194, p = 0.034) 12 months after surgery. On the other hand, after controlling for covariates, baseline depression symptoms, but not anxiety, were associated with greater odds of having an emergency admission (OR 1.088, CI 1.010–1.171, p = 0.027) and greater hazard of death/MACE (HR 1.137, CI 1.042–1.240, p = 0.004). These findings point to different pathways linking mood symptoms with recovery after CABG surgery

    A Novel Family of Toxoplasma IMC Proteins Displays a Hierarchical Organization and Functions in Coordinating Parasite Division

    Apicomplexans employ a peripheral membrane system called the inner membrane complex (IMC) for critical processes such as host cell invasion and daughter cell formation. We have identified a family of proteins that define novel sub-compartments of the Toxoplasma gondii IMC. These IMC Sub-compartment Proteins, ISP1, 2 and 3, are conserved throughout the Apicomplexa, but do not appear to be present outside the phylum. ISP1 localizes to the apical cap portion of the IMC, while ISP2 localizes to a central IMC region and ISP3 localizes to a central plus basal region of the complex. Targeting of all three ISPs is dependent upon N-terminal residues predicted for coordinated myristoylation and palmitoylation. Surprisingly, we show that disruption of ISP1 results in a dramatic relocalization of ISP2 and ISP3 to the apical cap. Although the N-terminal region of ISP1 is necessary and sufficient for apical cap targeting, exclusion of other family members requires the remaining C-terminal region of the protein. This gate-keeping function of ISP1 reveals an unprecedented mechanism of interactive and hierarchical targeting of proteins to establish these unique sub-compartments in the Toxoplasma IMC. Finally, we show that loss of ISP2 results in severe defects in daughter cell formation during endodyogeny, indicating a role for the ISP proteins in coordinating this unique process of Toxoplasma replication

    Interoception in anxiety and depression

    We review the literature on interoception as it relates to depression and anxiety, with a focus on belief, and alliesthesia. The connection between increased but noisy afferent interoceptive input, self-referential and belief-based states, and top-down modulation of poorly predictive signals is integrated into a neuroanatomical and processing model for depression and anxiety. The advantage of this conceptualization is the ability to specifically examine the interface between basic interoception, self-referential belief-based states, and enhanced top-down modulation to attenuate poor predictability. We conclude that depression and anxiety are not simply interoceptive disorders but are altered interoceptive states as a consequence of noisily amplified self-referential interoceptive predictive belief states

Data preparation and filtering steps can take considerable amount of processing time. Data pre-processing includes cleaning, normalization, transformation, feature extraction and selection. In this paper, Iliou and PCA data preprocessing methods evaluated in a data set of 103 students, aged 18–25, who were experiencing anxiety problems. The performance of Iliou and PCA data preprocessing methods was evaluated using the 10-fold cross validation method assessing seven classification algorithms, IB1, J48, Random Forest, MLP, SMO, JRip and FURIA, respectively. The classification results indicate that Iliou data preprocessing algorithm consistently and substantially outperforms PCA data preprocessing method, achieving 98.6% against 92.2% classification performance, respectively
