Properties of a New Group of Cosmic Nuclei: Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on Sodium, Aluminum, and Nitrogen
We report the properties of sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.46 million sodium and 0.51 million aluminum nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We found that Na and Al, together with nitrogen (N), belong to a distinct cosmic ray group. In this group, we observe that, similar to the N flux, both the Na flux and Al flux are well described by the sums of a primary cosmic ray component (proportional to the silicon flux) and a secondary cosmic ray component (proportional to the fluorine flux). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity for the N, Na, and Al fluxes and becomes dominant at the highest rigidities. The Na /Si and Al /Si abundance ratios at the source, 0.036 ±0.003 for Na /Si and 0.103 ±0.004 for Al /Si , are determined independent of cosmic ray propagation
Fano resonances in plasmonic core-shell particles and the Purcell effect
Despite a long history, light scattering by particles with size comparable
with the light wavelength still unveils surprising optical phenomena, and many
of them are related to the Fano effect. Originally described in the context of
atomic physics, the Fano resonance in light scattering arises from the
interference between a narrow subradiant mode and a spectrally broad radiation
line. Here, we present an overview of Fano resonances in coated spherical
scatterers within the framework of the Lorenz-Mie theory. We briefly introduce
the concept of conventional and unconventional Fano resonances in light
scattering. These resonances are associated with the interference between
electromagnetic modes excited in the particle with different or the same
multipole moment, respectively. In addition, we investigate the modification of
the spontaneous-emission rate of an optical emitter at the presence of a
plasmonic nanoshell. This modification of decay rate due to electromagnetic
environment is referred to as the Purcell effect. We analytically show that the
Purcell factor related to a dipole emitter oriented orthogonal or tangential to
the spherical surface can exhibit Fano or Lorentzian line shapes in the near
field, respectively.Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures; invited book chapter to appear in "Fano

Phenolic compounds and organic acids evaluation on red grapes used for winemaking in the Northeast of Brazil.
Monitoring maturation to determine harvest time is very important to determine the enological potential and the quality characteristics and typicality of the wines (Borghezan et al., 2011). Considering that there is no cold weather in the SĂŁo Francisco Valley, it is possible to scale and production of two harvests per year. This study aimed to determine the chemical composition of the ?Syrah? and ?Tempranillo? grapes, during maturation. Sixty plants were used for each cultivar, divided into three blocks

The studypresents the study for the construction of the Density, Verticality and Urban Sustainability Indicator (IDVS) for vertical condominiums in the municipality of Campo Grande, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Developed with the purpose of finding an ideal indicator of housing with quality in the public space and private condominiums. Researches were developed within the density, verticality and sustainability aspects, establishing parameters indicated by area professionals (urban planners, teachers, researchers and builders) who established different weights among the items surveyed. The variables chosen are divided into 10 items for "outside the condominium" and 10 for "inside the condominium
Incidental Diagnosis of Bladder Cancer in a 17-year-old Patient
AbstractBladder cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer among males and the ninth most common cause of cancer death. Bladder cancer can occur at any age. This paper reports the incidental diagnosis of bladder cancer in a 17-year-old female patient. Data on bladder cancer at this age are uncommon in the literature
Audiological findings in patients treated with radio- and concomitant chemotherapy for head and neck tumors

Abstract

Objective

To evaluate the functionality of the auditory system in patients who underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment with cisplatin to treat head and neck tumors.

Study Design

Case series with planned data collection.

Setting

From May 2007 to May 2008 by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and the Department of Oncology/Radiotherapy at <it>Faculdade de Medicina de MarĂlia</it>.

Subjects and Methods

Audiological evaluation (Pure Tone Audiometry (air and bone conduction), Speech Audiometry, Tympanometry, Acoustic Reflex testing and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions) was performed in 17 patients diagnosed with head and neck neoplasia and treated with chemotherapy, using cisplatin, and radiotherapy.

Results

12 left ears (70.5%) and 11 right ears (64.7%) presented bilateral decreased hearing soon after the treatment for the frequency 1 kHz (mild auditory damage) and for the frequency 8 kHz (more significant auditory damage).

Conclusion

Patients with head and neck cancer submitted to the conventional radiotherapy treatment, combined with the chemotherapy with cisplatin, presented a high incidence of decreased hearing by the end of treatment. Strong evidence was observed linking auditory alteration to the amount of radiotherapy treatment.</p
