An Observed Instance of Cooper’s Hawk (\u3ci\u3eAccipiter cooperii\u3c/i\u3e) Predation on a Chicken in an Urban Environment
On February 21, 2015, I had the opportunity to observe a Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) attack, kill, and feed on a chicken in an urban environment.
The attack occurred around 1:10 p.m. on February 21, 2015, in Lincoln, Nebraska, in a residential area that is often referred to as the Bethany neighborhood. With large mature trees and landscape hedges, it provided excellent cover for the hawk’s attack. Weather data for that day show a low temperature of 18 degrees Fahrenheit and a high temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit. There was residual snow cover in some areas, as Lincoln had experienced snowfall on February 1 (4.9 inches) and February 4 (6.6 inches)
Lopsided Galaxies, Weak Interactions and Boosting the Star Formation Rate
To investigate the link between weak tidal interactions in disk galaxies and
the boosting of their recent star formation, we obtain images and spatially
integrated spectra (3615A < lambda < 5315A) for 40 late-type spiral galaxies
(Sab-Sbc) with varying degrees of lopsidedness (a dynamical indicator of weak
interactions). We quantify lopsidedness as the amplitude of the m=1
Fourier component of the azimuthal surface brightness distribution, averaged
over a range of radii. We compare the young stellar content, quantified by
EW(H\delta_abs) and the strength of the 4000 Angstrom break (D_4000), with
lopsidedness and find a 3-4 sigma correlation between the two. We also find a
3.2 sigma correlation between EW(H\beta_emission) and lopsidedness. Using the
evolutionary population synthesis code of Bruzual & Charlot we model the
spectra as an ``underlying population'' and a superimposed ``boost population''
with the aim of constraining the fractional boost in the SFR averaged over the
past 0.5 Gyr (the characteristic lifetime of lopsidedness). From the difference
in both EW(H\delta_abs) and D_4000 between the most and least symmetric thirds
of our sample, we infer that ~ 1x10^9 M_solar of stars are formed over the
duration of a lopsided event in addition to the ``underlying'' SFH (assuming a
final galactic stellar mass of 10^10 M_solar). This corresponds to a factor of
8 increase in the SFR over the past 5x10^8 years. For the nuclear spectra, all
of the above correlations except D_4000 vs. are weaker than for the disk,
indicating that in lopsided galaxies, the SF boost is not dominated by the

Hydrologic control of nitrogenremoval, storage and export in a mountain stream
Nutrient cycling and export in streams and rivers should vary with flow regime, yet most studies of stream nutrient transformation do not include hydrologic variability. We used a stable isotope tracer of nitrogen (15N) to measure nitrate (NO3-) uptake, storage, and export in a mountain stream, Spring Creek, Idaho, U.S.A. We conducted two tracer tests of 2-week duration during snowmelt and baseflow. Dissolved and particulate forms of 15N were monitored over three seasons to test the hypothesis that stream N cycling would be dominated by export during floods, and storage during low flow. Floods exported more N than during baseflow conditions; however, snowmelt floods had higher than expected demand for NO3- because of hyporheic exchange. residence times of benthic N during both tracer tests were longer than 100 d for ephemeral pools such as benthic algae and wood biofilms. Residence times were much longer in fine detritus, insects, and the particulate N from the hyporheic zone, showing that assimilation and hydrologic storage can be important mechanisms for retaining particulate N. Of the tracer N stored in the stream, the primary form of export was via seston during periods of high flows, produced by summer rainstorms or spring snowmelt the following year. Spring Creek is not necessarily a conduit for nutrients during high flow; hydrologic exchange between the stream and its valley represents an important storage mechanism
Interest in healthy living outweighs presumed cultural norms for obesity for Ghanaian women
BACKGROUND: Cultural norms indicate that obesity reflects increased wealth and prosperity. Yet obesity is linked to serious medical illnesses. The purpose of this study was to determine if Ghanaian women would change their body image if it meant a healthier life. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to 305 Ghanaian women waiting for clinic appointments at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra Ghana. This survey included questions on current health, selection of figural stimuli, decision making on health and social determinants and 5 questions on self-perception of health from SF-36. Anthropometric measures were taken and body mass index calculated. Women were also provided with health related information at the conclusion of the interview. RESULTS: The majority of all women surveyed would reduce their current body image if it meant that they would have an overall healthier life and reduce the risks of obesity-linked illnesses and complications. Currently obese women were significantly more likely than non-obese women to reduce their body image to reduce the risk of hypertension (OR 2.03 [1.64 – 2.51],<0.001); cardiovascular accident (OR 1.96 [1.61 – 2.38],<0.001); diabetes (OR 2.00 [1.63 – 2.44],<0.001); myocardial infarction (OR 2.27 [1.80 – 2.86],<0.001); if requested by a spouse(OR 2.64 [1.98 – 3.52],<0.001); and to improve overall health (OR 1.95 [1.60 – 2.37], <0.001). There was no association with current body image and responses to SF-36. The decision to select a new body image was not influenced by education, income, marital status or parity. Age 50 years old and less was significantly associated with the body image size reduction to reduce the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and a cardiovascular accident. CONCLUSION: The Ghanaian women interviewed in this study are interested in living a healthy life and are willing to reduce their body size to reduce the risk of obesity-linked illnesses. The target group for any interventional studies and measures to reduce obesity appears to be women age 50 and younger
Capacidade para o trabalho e saúde: o que pensam as trabalhadoras da indústria de vestuário
Este estudo objetivou conhecer como as mulheres que atuam na indústria do vestuário em Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, entendem e relacionam os constructos capacidade para o trabalho e saúde. Utilizou-se metodologia qualitativa com análise dos depoimentos ancorada na teoria das representações sociais. Os resultados apontaram que a capacidade para o trabalho depende de fatores como capacitação, suporte social, exercício da profissão a domicilio, satisfação com o trabalho, saúde e envelhecimento. Além disso, ela sofre muitas influências externas ao trabalhador, que, por sua vez, precisa constantemente se adaptar às mudanças ocorridas. Os resultados evidenciaram a necessidade de reflexão sobre o papel das condições de trabalho e emprego, da rigidez organizacional e da perda de controle sobre o trabalho, na saúde e na capacidade para o trabalho das mulheres atuantes na indústria do vestuário
Galaxy Collisions - Dawn of a New Era
The study of colliding galaxies has progressed rapidly in the last few years,
driven by observations with powerful new ground and space-based instruments.
These instruments have used for detailed studies of specific nearby systems,
statistical studies of large samples of relatively nearby systems, and
increasingly large samples of high redshift systems. Following a brief summary
of the historical context, this review attempts to integrate these studies to
address the following key issues. What role do collisions play in galaxy
evolution, and how can recently discovered processes like downsizing resolve
some apparently contradictory results of high redshift studies? What is the
role of environment in galaxy collisions? How is star formation and nuclear
activity orchestrated by the large scale dynamics, before and during merger?
Are novel modes of star formation involved? What are we to make of the
association of ultraluminous X-ray sources with colliding galaxies? To what do
degree do mergers and feedback trigger long-term secular effects? How far can
we push the archaeology of individual systems to determine the nature of
precursor systems and the precise effect of the interaction? Tentative answers
to many of these questions have been suggested, and the prospects for answering

Horizontal Branch Stars: The Interplay between Observations and Theory, and Insights into the Formation of the Galaxy
We review HB stars in a broad astrophysical context, including both variable
and non-variable stars. A reassessment of the Oosterhoff dichotomy is
presented, which provides unprecedented detail regarding its origin and
systematics. We show that the Oosterhoff dichotomy and the distribution of
globular clusters (GCs) in the HB morphology-metallicity plane both exclude,
with high statistical significance, the possibility that the Galactic halo may
have formed from the accretion of dwarf galaxies resembling present-day Milky
Way satellites such as Fornax, Sagittarius, and the LMC. A rediscussion of the
second-parameter problem is presented. A technique is proposed to estimate the
HB types of extragalactic GCs on the basis of integrated far-UV photometry. The
relationship between the absolute V magnitude of the HB at the RR Lyrae level
and metallicity, as obtained on the basis of trigonometric parallax
measurements for the star RR Lyrae, is also revisited, giving a distance
modulus to the LMC of (m-M)_0 = 18.44+/-0.11. RR Lyrae period change rates are
studied. Finally, the conductive opacities used in evolutionary calculations of

Prospects for Constraining Cosmology with the Extragalactic Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature
Observers have demonstrated that it is now feasible to measure the cosmic
microwave background (CMB) temperature at high redshifts. We explore the
possible constraints on cosmology which might ultimately be derived from such
measurements. Besides providing a consistency check on standard and alternative
cosmologies, possibilities include: constraints on the inhomogeneity and
anisotropy of the universe at intermediate redshift ; an
independent probe of peculiar motions with respect to the Hubble flow; and
constraining the epoch of reionization. We argue that the best possibility is
as a probe of peculiar motions. We show, however, that the current measurement
uncertainty (K) in the local present absolute CMB
temperature imposes intrinsic limits on the use of such CMB temperature
measurements as a cosmological probe. At best, anisotropies at intermediate
redshift could only be constrained at a level of and peculiar
motions could only be determined to an uncertainty of km
s. If the high CMB temperature can only be measured with a precision
comparable to the uncertainty of the local interstellar CMB temperature, then

Enrichment and characterization of ammonia-oxidizing archaea from the open ocean : phylogeny, physiology and stable isotope fractionation

direct physiological evidence for ammonia oxidation by marine archaea is limited. We
report the enrichment and characterization of three strains of pelagic ammonia-oxidizing
archaea (AOA) from the north Pacific Ocean that have been maintained in laboratory
culture for over three years. Phylogenetic analyses indicate the three strains belong to a
previously identified clade of water column-associated AOA and possess 16S rRNA
genes and ammonia monooxygenase subunit a (amoA) genes highly similar (98-99%
identity) to those recovered in DNA and cDNA clone libraries from the open ocean. The
strains grow in natural seawater-based liquid medium while stoichiometrically converting
ammonium (NH4
+) to nitrite (NO2
-). Ammonia oxidation by the enrichments is only
partially inhibited by allylthiourea at concentrations known to inhibit cultivated
ammonia-oxidizing bacteria. The three strains were used to determine the nitrogen stable
isotope effect (15εNH3) during archaeal ammonia oxidation, an important parameter for
interpreting stable isotope ratios in the environment. Archaeal 15εNH3 ranged from 13-
41‰, within the range of that previously reported for ammonia-oxidizing bacteria.
Despite low amino acid identity between the archaeal and bacterial Amo proteins, their

Phylogenetic and functional marker genes to study ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) in the environment
The oxidation of ammonia plays a significant role in the transformation of fixed nitrogen in the global nitrogen cycle. Autotrophic ammonia oxidation is known in three groups of microorganisms. Aerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea convert ammonia into nitrite during nitrification. Anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (anammox) oxidize ammonia using nitrite as electron acceptor and producing atmospheric dinitrogen. The isolation and cultivation of all three groups in the laboratory are quite problematic due to their slow growth rates, poor growth yields, unpredictable lag phases, and sensitivity to certain organic compounds. Culture-independent approaches have contributed importantly to our understanding of the diversity and distribution of these microorganisms in the environment. In this review, we present an overview of approaches that have been used for the molecular study of ammonia oxidizers and discuss their application in different environments
