This research reports on a synthesis of radiocarbon (14C) dates and the organic content from a variety of depositional sites in a relatively small region in humid eastern Australia centred on Sydney. We focused on basal dates, changes in accumulation rates and the organic content of these sediment records in the period post-dating 21 thousand years ago to make inferences about past environmental conditions, or to infer the timing of past environmental change. We found that low rates of sediment and organic accumulation at the Last Glacial Maximum continued well into the late Pleistocene. The average rate of sediment deposition and organic content increased from about 14.5 calibrated kiloanni before present (cal ka BP), perhaps coincident with Meltwater Pulse 1A, but this was then checked by dry conditions during the Antarctic Climatic Reversal chronozone. An abrupt increase in the average rate of sediment accumulation coincided with the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary (at 11.7 cal ka BP), and this continued until about 9.2 cal ka BP, largely coinciding with the Antarctic thermal maximum, and probably reflecting reduced moisture availability in the Sydney region. Indication of depressed temperature and a more positive moisture availability, from about 9 to 7.6 cal ka BP, witnessed the fastest increase in the number of sites than at any other time. An overall drier early Holocene abruptly altered at about 7.5 cal ka BP and a mid-Holocene ‘optimum’ in moisture availability extended to 6.2 cal ka BP. The compilation of organic contents of the mid-late Holocene suggests environmental variability, but El Niño frequency or strength is not implicated as a driving force. Increased organic productivity, especially after 2.8 cal ka BP, corresponded to a peak in summer insolation, and associated seasonality of insolation and this is likely to have resulted in increased, or more consistent, summer rainfall and easterly air flow into the Sydney region. In contrast to previous generalisations about changes in south-eastern Australia during the Holocene, which have often relied on palaeoenvironmental records from further south, the southward migration of the intertropical convergence zone during the Holocene had vastly different synoptic outcomes in the Sydney region, with the early Holocene drier as continental air dominated, and the late Holocene wetter, as the synoptic conditions saw more tropical and easterly airflow. This work demonstrates the danger in making generalisations across regions and highlights the utility of the compilation of data at a homoclimatic, regional scale

Background : Elevated serum level of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is associated with adverse outcomes in dialyzed patients. Objectives : The CUPID study compared the efficacy of a cinacalcet-based regimen with conventional care (vitamin D and P binders) for achieving the stringent NKF-K/DOQI targets for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Additionally, we analyzed change in FGF23 levels between two treatments to explore the cinacalcet effect in lowering FGF23. Design : Multicenter, open-labeled, randomized controlled study. Setting : Seven university-affiliated hospitals in Korea. Participants : Overall, 66 peritoneal dialysis patients were enrolled. Intervention : Sixty six patients were randomly assigned to treatment with either cinacalcet + oral vitamin D (cinacalcet group, n = 33) or oral vitamin D alone (control group, n = 33) to achieve K/DOQI targets. CUPID included a 4-week screening for vitamin D washout, a 12-week dose-titration, and a 4-week assessment phases. We calculated mean values of iPTH, Ca, P, Ca x P, during assessment phase and final FGF23 to assess the outcome. Main outcome measures : Achievement of >30% reduction of iPTH from baseline (primary) and FGF23 reduction (secondary). Results : 72.7% (n = 24) of the cinacalcet group and 93.9% (n = 31) of the control group completed the study. Cinacalcet group received 30.2 ± 18.0 mg/day of cinacalcet and 0.13 ± 0.32 μg/d oral vitamin D (P < 0.001 vs. control with 0.27 ± 0.18 μg/d vitamin D). The proportion of patients who reached the primary endpoint was not statistically different (48.5% vs. 51.5%, cinacalcet vs. control, P = 1.000). After treatment, cinacalcet group experienced a significant reduction in FGF23 levels (median value from 3,960 to 2,325 RU/ml, P = 0.002), while an insignificant change was shown for control group (from 2,085 to 2,415 RU/ml). The percent change of FGF23 after treatment was also significantly different between the two groups (− 42.54% vs. 15.83%, P = 0.008). After adjustment, cinacalcet treatment was independently associated with the serum FGF23 reduction. Conclusion : Cinacalcet treatment was independently associated with the reduction of FGF23 in our PD patients. The CUPID study was funded by Kyowa Kirin, Korea. Entrepreneurship, export orientation and economic growth

In this paper the relationship between a country’s prevalence of new ventures and its rate of economic growth is investigated, while taking into account new ventures’ export orientation. It is generally acknowledged that new venture creation as well as export activity may both be important strategies for achieving national economic growth. However, to our knowledge no attempt has been made to investigate empirically the role of export-driven new ventures in economic growth. We focus on the national level and use data for a sample of 34 countries over the period 2002–2008. Our results suggest that, on top of a positive relation between entrepreneurial activity in general and subsequent macroeconomic growth, there is an additional positive effect of export-oriented early-stage entrepreneurship in higher-income countries. However, there is no such additional effect in lower-income countries

Privaros: A Framework for Privacy-Compliant Delivery Drones

We present Privaros, a framework to enforce privacy policies on drones. Privaros is designed for commercial delivery drones, such as the ones that will likely be used by Amazon Prime Air. Such drones visit a number of host airspaces, each of which may have different privacy requirements. Privaros provides an information flow control framework to enforce the policies of these hosts on the guest delivery drones. The mechanisms in Privaros are built on top of ROS, a middleware popular in many drone platforms. This paper presents the design and implementation of these mechanisms, describes how policies are specified, and shows that Privaros's policy specification can be integrated with India's Digital Sky portal. Our evaluation shows that a drone running Privaros can robustly enforce various privacy policies specified by hosts, and that its core mechanisms only marginally increase communication latency and power consumption

The role of the carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, in protecting against age-related macular degeneration: A review based on controversial evidence

PURPOSE: A review of the role of the carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, and their function in altering the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: Medline and Embase search. RESULTS: Recent evidence introduces the possibility that lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids found in a variety of fruits and vegetables may protect against the common eye disease of macular degeneration. This potential and the lack to slow the progression of macular degeneration, has fueled high public interest in the health benefits of these carotenoids and prompted their inclusion in various supplements. The body of evidence supporting a role in this disease ranges from basic studies in experimental animals to various other clinical and epidemiological studies. Whilst some epidemiological studies suggest a beneficial role for carotenoids in the prevention of AMD, others are found to be unrelated to it. Results of some clinical studies indicate that the risk for AMD is reduced when levels of the carotenoids are elevated in the serum or diet, but this correlation is not observed in other studies. Published data concerning the toxicity of the carotenoids or the optimum dosage of these supplements is lacking. CONCLUSION: An intake of dietary supplied nutrients rich in the carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, appears to be beneficial in protecting retinal tissues, but this is not proven. Until scientifically sound knowledge is available we recommend for patients judged to be at risk for AMD to: alter their diet to more dark green leafy vegetables, wear UV protective lenses and a hat when outdoors. Future investigations on the role of nutrition, light exposure, genetics, and combinations of photodynamic therapy with intravitreal steroid (triamcinolone-acetonide) injections hold potential for future treatment possibilities

The Wollongong lead study: An investigation of the blood lead levels of pre-school children and their relationship to soil lead levels

The Wollongong Lead Study was undertaken in 1989–90 by the Pollution Task Force of Healthy Cities Illawarra and the Health Promotion Unit of the Illawarra Area Health Service. It was done in response to community concern in the Port Kembla area about the health effects of known high atmospheric lead levels, which result from the emissions from the Electrolytic Refining & Smelting Pty Ltd (now Southern Copper) smelter. It followed procedures similar to those used in the extensive and long-term studies of the consequences of emissions from the lead smelter at Port Pirie in South Australia and concentrated on the highest risk group identified by the Port Pirie work, namely very young children (mainly 1–3 years). This paper reports the aspects of the study related to soil-blood level relationships. Two areas were compared: a southern area near the smelter; and a northern area near Bellambi which was used as a control because it is not usually affected by air pollution from the industrial zone at Port Kembla. A total of 164 soil samples and 83 blood samples were collected from the southern area, together with 79 soil samples and 30 blood samples from the northern area. Soil lead levels were not high by world standards in either region. The southern area had greater levels than the northern area. While there was no apparent pattern in the northern area, soil lead levels rose significantly towards the smelter at Port Kembla. Blood lead levels were also higher in the southern area. Here they rose from the south towards the industrial area generally, rather than peaking near the smelter. In the northern area there was no pattern apparent. Soil levels were significantly correlated with blood levels (significance level >0.05) and explained 29 per cent of the variation in the blood data. Soil lead levels can be used, therefore, as a general indicator of likely high blood lead levels in young children. Seven children (8%) in the southern area and two children (7%) in the northern area had blood lead levels above the NH&MRC recommended level of concern (25 μg/dL). © 1992, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
