OBJECTIVE: To model the reduction in premature deaths attributed to noncommunicable diseases if targets for reformulation of processed food agreed between the Portuguese health ministry and the food industry were met. METHODS: The 2015 co-regulation agreement sets voluntary targets for reducing sugar, salt and trans-fatty acids in a range of products by 2021. We obtained government data on dietary intake in 2015-2016 and on population structure and deaths from four major noncommunicable diseases over 1990-2016. We used the Preventable Risk Integrated ModEl tool to estimate the deaths averted if reformulation targets were met in full. We projected future trends in noncommunicable disease deaths using regression modelling and assessed whether Portugal was on track to reduce baseline premature deaths from noncommunicable diseases in the year 2010 by 25% by 2025, and by 30% before 2030. FINDINGS: If reformulation targets were met, we projected reductions in intake in 2015-2016 for salt from 7.6 g/day to 7.1 g/day; in total energy from 1911 kcal/day to 1897 kcal/day due to reduced sugar intake; and in total fat (% total energy) from 30.4% to 30.3% due to reduced trans-fat intake. This consumption profile would result in 248 fewer premature noncommunicable disease deaths (95% CI: 178 to 318) in 2016. We projected that full implementation of the industry agreement would reduce the risk of premature death from 11.0% in 2016 to 10.7% by 2021. CONCLUSION: The co-regulation agreement could save lives and reduce the risk of premature death in Portugal. Nevertheless, the projected impact on mortality was insufficient to meet international targets

Baccharis trimera (Carqueja) Improves metabolic and redox status in an experimental model of type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that causes severe complications due to the increased oxidative stress induced by disease. Many plants are popularly used in the treatment of diabetes, e.g., Baccharis trimera (carqueja). The aim of this study was to explore the potential application of the B. trimera hydroethanolic extract in preventing redox stress induced by diabetes and its hypoglycemic properties. Experiments were conducted with 48 female rats, divided into 6 groups, named C (control), C600 (control + extract 600 mg/kg), C1200 (control + extract 1200 mg/kg), D (diabetic), D600 (diabetic + 600 mg/kg), and D1200 (diabetic + 1200 mg/kg). Type 1 diabetes was induced with alloxan, and the animals presented hyperglycemia and reduction in insulin and body weight. After seven days of experimentation, the nontreated diabetic group showed changes in biochemical parameters (urea, triacylglycerol, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase) and increased carbonyl protein levels. Regarding the antioxidant enzymes, an increase in superoxide dismutase activity was observed but in comparison a decrease in catalase and glutathione peroxidase activity was noted which suggests that diabetic rats suffered redox stress. In addition, the mRNA of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase enzymes were altered. Treatment of diabetic rats with B. trimera extract resulted in an improved glycemic profile and liver function, decreased oxidative damage, and altered the expression of mRNA of the antioxidants enzymes. These results together suggest that B. trimera hydroethanolic extract has a protective effect against diabetes

New heterogeneous catalyst for the esterification of fatty acid produced by surface aromatization/sulfonation of oilseed cake.

In this work, an efficient heterogeneous acid catalyst for the esterification of oleic acid was prepared directly from oilseed cake by a simple sulfonation with concentrated H2SO4. Characterization by SEM/EDS, IR, Raman, TG, TG/MS, potentiometric titration showed that treatment with H2SO4 for 1, 2 and 4 h at 120 _C partially dehydrates the cake to form a carbon/cellulose composite which is sulfonated to produce strong ASO3H acidic sites. These surface sites were active for the esterification of oleic acid with yields ca. 84%, 88% and 94% in the presence of 5, 10 and 20 wt% catalyst, respectively. These results are comparable to 98% yield obtained with 1 wt% H2SO4 and higher than 75% observed for a high surface area (880 m2 g_1) sulfonated activated carbon with similar number of ASO3H active groups. These results are discussed in terms of two effects: (i) the number of sulfonic surface acidic groups and (ii) the presence of a hydrophilic cellulosic fraction in the catalyst that adsorbs/traps water formed in the reaction shifting the esterification equilibrium and improving the yield

Trypanosoma cruzi strains from distinct geographic areas show differences in drug resistance and association between parasites genetic and treatment response has been observed. Considering that benznidazole (BZ) can reduce the parasite burden and tissues damage, even in not cured animals and individuals, the goal is to assess the drug response to BZ of T. cruzi II strains isolated from children of the Jequitinhonha Valley, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, before treatment. Mice infected and treated with BZ in both phases of infection were compared with the untreated and evaluated by fresh blood examination, haemoculture, polymerase chain reaction, conventional (ELISA) and non-conventional (FC-ALTA) serologies. In mice treated in the acute phase, a significant decrease in parasitaemia was observed for all strains. Positive parasitological and/or serological tests in animals treated during the acute and chronic (95.1-100%) phases showed that most of the strains were BZ resistant. However, beneficial effect was demonstrated because significant reduction (p < 0.05%) and/or suppression of parasitaemia was observed in mice infected with all strains (acute phase), associated to reduction/elimination of inflammation and fibrosis for two/eight strains. BZ offered some benefit, even in not cured animals, what suggest that BZ use may be recommended at least for recent chronic infection of the studied region

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of autolyzed yeast on performance, cecal microbiota, and leukogram of weaned piglets. A total of 96 piglets of commercial line weaned at 21-day-old were used. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four treatments (diets containing 0.0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, and 0.9% autolyzed yeast), eight replicates, and three animals per pen in order to evaluate daily weight gain, daily feed intake, and feed conversion in periods of 0 to 15, 0 to 26, and 0 to 36 days. Quadratic effects of autolyzed yeast inclusion were observed on the feed conversion from 0 to 15 days, on daily weight gain from 0 to 15 days, 0 to 26 days and, 0 to 36 days, indicating an autolyzed yeast optimal inclusion level between 0.4% and 0.5%. No effect from autolyzed yeast addition was observed on piglet daily feed intake, cecal microbiota, and leukogram; however, i.m. application of E. coli lipopolysaccharide reduced the values of total leukocytes and their fractions (neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and rods). Therefore, autolyzed yeast when provided at levels between 0.4% and 0.5% improved weaned piglets’ performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In the present work, thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (TS-FF-AAS) was employed for Cu and Zn determination in bovine milk and fruit juice samples without any pretreatment. TS-FF-AAS system was optimized and a sample volume of 300 mul was injected into the carrier stream (0.014 mol I-1 HNO3 at a flow rate of 0.4 ml min(-1)), and it was introduced into a hot Ni tube. The detection limits obtained for Cu and Zn in aqueous solution were 2.2 and 0.91 mug l(-1), respectively, and 3.2 mug l(-1) for Cu in a medium containing water-soluble tertiary amines. The relative standard deviations varied from 2.7 to 4.2% (n = 12). Sample preparation was carried out by simple dilution in water or in water-soluble tertiary amines medium. Accuracy was checked by performing addition-recovery experiments as well as by using reference materials (whole milk powder, non-fat milk powder, and infant formula). Recoveries varied from 97.7 to 105.3% for Cu and Zn. All results obtained for reference materials were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
