Vortex Dynamics within the BCS Theory
We outline a conventional path integral derivation of the transverse force
and the friction for a vortex in a superconductor based on the BCS theory. The
derivation is valid in both clean and dirty limits at both zero and finite
temperatures. The transverse force is found to be precisely as what has been
obtained by Ao and Thouless using the Berry's phase method. The friction is
essentially the same as the Bardeen and Stephen's result.
Errors in some previous representive microscopic derivations are discussed.Comment: Revtex. the Invited Talk in M2S-HTSC-V conference in Beijing, Feb.

Escape of trapped electrons from a helium surface: a dynamical theory
We present a dynamical theory which incorporates the electron-electron
correlations and the effects of external magnetic fields for an electron
escaping from a helium surface. Analytical expressions for the escape rate can
be obtained in various limits. In particular, the tunneling rate with a
parallel magnetic field is presented explicitly.Comment: latex, 3 page

Microscopic Oscillations in the Quantum Nucleation of Vortices Subject to Periodic Pinning Potential in a Thin Superconductor
We present a theory for the decay of a supercurrent through nucleation of
vortex-antivortex pairs in a two-dimensional superconductor in the presence of
dissipation and of a periodic pinning potential. Through a powerful quantum
electrodynamics formulation of the problem we show that the nucleation rate
develops oscillations in its current-density dependence which are connected to
the pinning periodicity. A remnant of the dissipation-driven localization
transition is present, and an estimate of the nucleation rate suggests that
these effects might be observable in real thin superconductors.Comment: REVTeX file, 4 pages in two-column mode, 1 Postscript figure, to

Invalidity of Classes of Approximated Hall Effect Calculations
In this comment, I point out a number of approximated derivations for the
effective equation of motion, now been applied to d-wave superconductors by
Kopnin and Volovik are invalid. The major error in those approximated
derivations is the inappropriate use of the relaxation time approximation in
force-force correlation functions, or in force balance equations, or in similar
variations. This approximation is wrong and unnecessary.Comment: final version, minor changes, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
TRANSPORT-PROPERTIES OF SOLITONS
We calculate in this article the transport coefficients which characterize the dynamics of solitons in quantum field theory using the methods of dissipative quantum systems. We show how the damping and diffusion coefficients of solitonlike excitations can be calculated using the integral functional formalism. The model obtained in this article has features which cannot be obtained in the standard models of dissipation in quantum mechanics.4854037404
ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO THE DYNAMICS OF POLARONS IN ONE DIMENSION
We developed a method based on functional integration to treat the dynamics of polarons in one-dimensional systems. We treat the acoustical and the optical case in a unified manner, showing their differences and similarities. The mobility and the diffusion coefficients are calculated in the Markovian approximation in the strong-coupling limit.46148858887
Effective quantum dynamics of two Brownian particles
Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)We use the system-plus-reservoir approach to study the quantum dynamics of a bipartite continuous variable system (two generic particles). We present an extension of the traditional model of a bath of oscillators which is capable of inducing an effective coupling between the two parts of the system depending on the choice made for the spectral density of the bath. The coupling is nonlinear in the system variables and an exponential dependence on these variables is imposed in order to guarantee the translational invariance of the model if the two particles are not subject to any external potential. The reduced density operator is obtained by the functional integral method. The dynamical susceptibility of the reservoir is modeled in order to introduce, besides a characteristic frequency, a characteristic length that determines if the effective interaction potential is strong enough to induce entanglement between the particles. Our model provides a criterion of distance for identifying in which cases a common environment can induce entanglement. Three regimes are found: the short distance regime, equivalent to a bilinear system-reservoir coupling, the long distance regime in which the particles act like coupled to independent reservoirs, and the intermediate regime suitable for the competition between decoherence and induced entanglement.803Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Millennium Institute for Quantum InformationFundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
Tunneling of a Quantized Vortex: Roles of Pinning and Dissipation
We have performed a theoretical study of the effects of pinning potential and
dissipation on vortex tunneling in superconductors. Analytical results are
obtained in various limits relevant to experiment. In general we have found
that pinning and dissipation tend to suppress the effect of the vortex velocity
dependent part of the Magnus force on vortex tunneling.Comment: Latex, 12 page
