Revised Pulsar Spindown
We address the issue of electromagnetic pulsar spindown by combining our
experience from the two limiting idealized cases which have been studied in
great extent in the past: that of an aligned rotator where ideal MHD conditions
apply, and that of a misaligned rotator in vacuum. We construct a spindown
formula that takes into account the misalignment of the magnetic and rotation
axes, and the magnetospheric particle acceleration gaps. We show that near the
death line aligned rotators spin down much slower than orthogonal ones. In
order to test this approach, we use a simple Monte Carlo method to simulate the
evolution of pulsars and find a good fit to the observed pulsar distribution in
the P-Pdot diagram without invoking magnetic field decay. Our model may also
account for individual pulsars spinning down with braking index n < 3, by
allowing the corotating part of the magnetosphere to end inside the light
cylinder. We discuss the role of magnetic reconnection in determining the
pulsar braking index. We show, however, that n ~ 3 remains a good approximation
for the pulsar population as a whole. Moreover, we predict that pulsars near
the death line have braking index values n > 3, and that the older pulsar
population has preferentially smaller magnetic inclination angles. We discuss
possible signatures of such alignment in the existing pulsar data.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures; accepted to Ap
Long-term Dynamics of the Electron-nuclear Spin System of a Semiconductor Quantum Dot
A quasi-classical theoretical description of polarization and relaxation of
nuclear spins in a quantum dot with one resident electron is developed for
arbitrary mechanisms of electron spin polarization. The dependence of the
electron-nuclear spin dynamics on the correlation time of electron
spin precession, with frequency , in the nuclear hyperfine field is
analyzed. It is demonstrated that the highest nuclear polarization is achieved
for a correlation time close to the period of electron spin precession in the
nuclear field. For these and larger correlation times, the indirect hyperfine
field, which acts on nuclear spins, also reaches a maximum. This maximum is of
the order of the dipole-dipole magnetic field that nuclei create on each other.
This value is non-zero even if the average electron polarization vanishes. It
is shown that the transition from short correlation time to
does not affect the general structure of the equation for nuclear spin
temperature and nuclear polarization in the Knight field, but changes the
values of parameters, which now become functions of . For
correlation times larger than the precession time of nuclei in the electron
hyperfine field, it is found that three thermodynamic potentials (,
, ) characterize the polarized electron-nuclear spin
system. The values of these potentials are calculated assuming a sharp
transition from short to long correlation times, and the relaxation mechanisms
of these potentials are discussed. The relaxation of the nuclear spin potential
is simulated numerically showing that high nuclear polarization decreases
relaxation rate.Comment: RevTeX 4, 12 pages, 9 figure
Identification of red supergiants in nearby galaxies with mid-IR photometry
The role of episodic mass loss in massive star evolution is one of the most
important open questions of current stellar evolution theory. Episodic mass
loss produces dust and therefore causes evolved massive stars to be very
luminous in the mid-infrared and dim at optical wavelengths. We aim to increase
the number of investigated luminous mid-IR sources to shed light on the late
stages of these objects. To achieve this we employed mid-IR selection criteria
to identity dusty evolved massive stars in two nearby galaxies. The method is
based on mid-IR colors, using 3.6 {\mu}m and 4.5 {\mu}m photometry from
archival Spitzer Space Telescope images of nearby galaxies and J-band
photometry from 2MASS. We applied our criteria to two nearby star-forming dwarf
irregular galaxies, Sextans A and IC 1613, selecting eight targets, which we
followed up with spectroscopy. Our spectral classification and analysis yielded
the discovery of two M-type supergiants in IC 1613, three K-type supergiants
and one candidate F-type giant in Sextans A, and two foreground M giants. We
show that the proposed criteria provide an independent way for identifying
dusty evolved massive stars, that can be extended to all nearby galaxies with
available Spitzer/IRAC images at 3.6 {\mu}m and 4.5 {\mu}m.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, A&A in pres
Clustering in disordered ferromagnets: The Curie temperature in diluted magnetic semiconductors
We theoretically investigate impurity correlation and magnetic clustering
effects on the long-range ferromagnetic ordering in diluted magnetic
semiconductors, such as , using
analytical arguments and direct Monte Carlo simulations. We obtain an analytic
formula for the ferromagnetic transition temperature which becomes
asymptotically exact in the strongly disordered, highly dilute (i.e. small )
regime. We establish that impurity correlations have only small effects on
with the neutrally correlated random disorder producing the nominally
highest . We find that the ferromagnetic order is approached from the
high temperature paramagnetic side through a random magnetic clustering
phenomenon consistent with the percolation transition scenario.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
