Latina/o Conversion and Miracle-Seeking at a Buddhist Temple

The growing diversification of the US Latino religious’ experiences calls for scholarly attention beyond Protestant or Catholic categories. This study begins to answer this call. Using interview data with 26 Latinos collected over 2 years of observation at the True Lama Meditation Center (TLMC) in Houston, Texas, we describe how Latinos who convert to Buddhism or actively attend the temple while also continuing to attend Christian services (both Catholic and Protestant) see themselves and understand their religious identities and practices. We then explore the reasons for their conversion or changes in religious identities and practices through various theoretical lens. Although the majority of respondents now claim to be Buddhist, many did not switch religions but augmented or extended their religious identities and practices. Reasons for conversion to Buddhism or concurrent involvement at the temple and Buddhist faith practices include seeking material support and miracles and those seeking spiritual fulfillment they felt they were not getting in Christian faith practices

Informational dysfunctions in the scientific disclosure of environmental crisis occurrences in Spain

The object is to gather all of the informative deficiencies disclosed and alerted by previous scientific studies that are centered on the sources, the edition and the thematic focus of these doings. An inquest whose data is considered to be of interest to obtain a Status Quo of this malpractice broadens the knowledge of this material and can act as a methodological base for future comparative studies. The methodology consisted of an exploratory approach to Spanish academic production in the communication sector through a bibliographical search of national and international databases. The results indicate that among the principle deficiencies is an elevated representation of official sources, principally political sources, compared to a scarcity of independent expert sources and the absence of informative pluralism, strong credibility given to government run investigative centers, human sources dominate the documented ones, grammatical errors and errors in the precision of environmental concepts, thematic focus centered on the crossfire of accusations among the implicated sources, superficially elaborated without paying attention to the risk to human health or the environment but highlighting the most attractive and sensationalist features

Training Elementary School Students to Intervene as Peer-Advocates to Stop Bullying at School: A Pilot Study

    Get PDF
The prevalence of bullying among children has prompted the development of school- based programs to address this problem. This pilot study evaluated the effectiveness of a brief, standalone bystander bullying program for elementary school students. The purpose to the program was to train students to take action as peer-advocates. After completing the 75-minute program, students reported an increase in their ability to identify what different types of bullying look like, knowledge of bystander intervention strategies, and general confidence intervening as peer-advocates. Furthermore, fifth grade students showed the greatest response to the program. Implications for school counselors as leaders in program implementation and future directions for research are discussed

On the rough Gronwall lemma and its applications

We present a rough path analog of the classical Gronwall Lemma introduced recently by A. Deya, M. Gubinelli, M. Hofmanov\'a, S. Tindel in [arXiv:1604.00437] and discuss two of its applications. First, it is applied in the framework of rough path driven PDEs in order to establish energy estimates for weak solutions. Second, it is used in order to prove uniqueness for reflected rough differential equations

A Study on the Impact of Climate Variability/Change on Water Resources in the Philippines

    Get PDF
This paper presents an effort toward a better understanding of the potential impact of climate variability and change on the hydrology and water resources in the Philippines. Impacts of extreme events such as droughts are discussed. A preliminary study on the variability of inflow in relation to rainfall at the major dams in Luzon and the natural water reservoir of Lake Lanao is presented. Areas for future study are also mentioned.watershed

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) on clinical and diagnostic methods and radiological features of pulmonary TB, in comparison to non diabetic pulmonary TB patients, in Golestan province, Northeast of Iran. Methodology: In this retrospective cross-sectional study during 2004-2008, medical records of patients with definite diagnosis of pulmonary TB were reviewed. Demographic data, clinical & diagnostic method and radiological findings were studied. Radiological data and lung High Resolution computed tomographic scan (lung HRCT) were done by two different radiologists. After data entry into SPSS-16, Fischer's exact test and chi-square test were used to compare the two groups (TB with DM & without it). P-value 0.05). Multilobar cavities were significantly more reported in diabetics (p-value = 0.014). No statistical differences were seen between two groups radiologically. Conclusion: Tuberculosis could be more invasive in diabetic patients especially females hence they should be given more attention
