Abstract

Introduction

Soft-tissue perineuriomas are rare benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors in the subcutis of the extremities and the trunks of young patients. To our knowledge, this the first presentation of the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of a soft-tissue perineurioma in the retroperitoneum with pathologic correlation.

Case presentation

A 63-year-old Japanese man was referred for assessment of high blood pressure. Abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined, gradually enhancing tumor without focal degeneration or hemorrhage adjacent to the pancreatic body. Tumor excision with distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy was performed, as a malignant tumor of pancreatic origin could not be ruled out. No recurrence has been noted in the 16 months since the operation. Pathologic examination of the tumor revealed a soft-tissue perineurioma of the retroperitoneum.

Conclusion

Although the definitive diagnosis of soft-tissue perineurioma requires biopsy and immunohistochemical reactivity evaluation, the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings described in this report suggest inclusion of this rare tumor in the differential diagnosis when such findings occur in the retroperitoneum.</p

We conducted the questionnaire survey on the mothers' interest in eating and examined a possible relationship between the mothers' interest and the results of their children's the food name familiarity test. The survey was carried out on 68 and 71 mothers of five- and four-year-olds, respectively, in November, 2008. The questionnaire contains 19 questions about their interest in eating and 20 about their training in eating at home. The subjects of the survey were the mothers of the children belonging to a private kindergarten, where the food name familiarity test was performed using 20 kinds of food (whole and cut foods) . The mean percentage scores of correct answers among the five-year-old children were 77.0% and 70.5% for the wholes and the cuts, respectively, and among the four-year-old children 68.0% and 60.5% for the whiles and the cuts, respectively. There was a significant relation between the number of mothers who buy food after checking its label for produced area and the percentage of a correct answer, both for wholes and cuts, among the four-yearold children(p=0.049,p<0.0001). And there was also a significant relation between the number of mothers who teach their children to chew well during meal and the percentage of a correct answer, both for wholes and cuts, among the five-year-old c hildren(p=0.0021,p=0.007). It was suggested that the kindergarteners can learn the names of food quickly and easily through their rich exposure to food at home when their mothers have much interest in eatin

The Fundamental Law of Shokuiku was established on June, 2005, and The Basic Plans for "Shokuiku" Promotion was issued on March, 2006, which puts much focus on "shokuiku" so that children can learn "the zest for living". It is desirable that the proper "shokuiku" is introduced to children in their early stage. Most of the pre-school children go to kindergartens or nursery schools. In 2004, 58.9% of them finished kindergartens and 37.8% finished nursery schools. The school-lunch system has been compulsory in nursery schools, while not in kindergartens. This is why we conducted the questionnaire in order to understand how much kindergarten teachers know "shokuiku" and what they think about "shoku" and food. As one of the results, a significant difference of consciousness of kindergarten teachers has been found between the kindergartens which have their own kitchens and cook lunch themselves and those which buy lunch instead of cooking themselves. It is necessary that the school-lunch system should be considered as part of education and nursing in the kindergartens

Junior high school output activities based on the "Large Grammar" method : Using English as a communication tool.

At Tottori University junior high school we practice output activities on a daily basis in our English classes with the aim of enhancing students’ ability to communicate in English. These activities, using the Large Grammar method proposed by one of the authors, Kazumi Adachi, rely on improvised output. In this paper, we introduce the theory of Large Grammar, then give examples of activities used in each grade. We are aiming for activities that encourage students to think "voluntarily", "interactively" and "deeply" about the task. We also want them to connect with others in English. We will introduce the attempts that we have made in each grade to deepen students individual learning

The Educational Guideline in Kindergarten by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science andTechnology was revised in April, 2009: the aim for the practical exercise to enjoy eating together withteachers and friends were added in the subject area of Health. To promote the food education in kindergarten,it is necessary to make an instructional plan and carry out the food education systematically. However, no guideline for the food education in kindergarten has been established by the Ministry. Here, we attemptedto make a general, year-long program of the food education in kindergarten according to the Guidebook onDietary Education in elementary school prescribed by the Ministry. The general plan includes the aim of thefood education in kindergarten, the lunchtime programs for each stage of age (3-5 years old children) and thecooperative activities with elementary school and the administrative management agency. Furthermore, weshowed the effective succession in guidelines for the subject areas of the tasks in every day life, the targets worth achieving for an ideal child, and the instructive teaching at lunchtime, with respect to the five subjectareas described in the Educational Guideline in Kindergarten; Health, Human relations, Environment, Languageand Expression. The plan we made, adaptable to all kindergartens according to their situations, may greatlycontribute to the promotion of the food education for preschoolers in future

ESAC, the EURL ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee, advises EURL ECVAM on scientific issues. Its main role is to conduct independent peer review of validation studies of alternative test methods and to assess their scientific validity for a given purpose. The committee reviews the appropriateness of study design and management, the quality of results obtained and the plausibility of the conclusions drawn. ESAC peer reviews are formally initiated with a EURL ECVAM Request for ESAC Advice, which provides the necessary background for the peer-review and establishes its objectives, timelines and the questions to be addressed. The peer review is normally prepared by specialised ESAC Working Groups. These are typically composed of ESAC members and other external experts relevant to the test method under review. These experts may be nominated by ESAC, EURL ECVAM and partner organisations within the International Cooperation on Alternative Test Methods (ICATM). ESAC ultimately decides on the composition of these Working Groups. ESAC's advice to EURL ECVAM is formally provided as 'ESAC Opinions' and 'Working Group Reports' at the end of the peer review. ESAC may also issue Opinions on other scientific issues of relevance to the work and mission of EURL ECVAM but not directly related to a specific alternative test method. The ESAC Opinion expressed in this report relates to the peer-review of the BASF-coordinated Performance Standards-based validation of the LuSens test method for skin sensitisation testing.JRC.F.3-Chemicals Safety and Alternative Method

Visceral fat accumulation is a risk factor for various cardiovascular diseases. Chronic hemodialysis patients are at higher risk for cardiovascular diseases than normal people. However, little is known about the health guidelines for decreasing visceral fat accumulation in hemodialysis patients. This study aimed to study the relationships between visceral fat content, nutrient intake, and physical activity between hemodialysis patients with and without visceral fat accumulation. Another objective was to determine the lifestyle factors that led to accumulation of visceral fat in hemodialysis patients. This study investigated 31 chronic hemodialysis patients in a hospital. Each individual's visceral fat area (VFA) was measured by performing computed tomography. Energy and various nutrient intakes and levels of physical activity were determined by using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). In the subjects, 10 had visceral fat accumulation and 21 did not. The average VFA was 168.7±67.9 cm2 in the accumulation group and 53.1±26.2 cm2 in the non-accumulation group. There was no significant difference in energy intake between the accumulation group and the non-accumulation group. The intake of vitamin D was significantly higher and that of seaweed was significantly lower in the accumulation group. The VFA of the group having high physical activity (Level 3) was significantly lower compared with that of the group having low physical activity (Level 1). Therefore, we hypothesize that, in chronic hemodialysis patients, the volume of nutritional elements and foods, not energy intakes, and the level of physical activity, may be associated with visceral fat accumulation
