Evolutions towards a new LSPR particle: Nano-sinusoid Progress in Electromagnetic Research (PIER)

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a novel nano-sinusoid particle to be employed in enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bio-sensing devices. Numerical investigations are carried out to demonstrate advantages o®ered by the proposed nano-particle on LSPR enhancement over other nano-particles including noble nano-triangles and nano-diamonds. Although nano-triangles exhibit high concentration of the electric ¯eld near their tips, when illuminated with a light polarized along the tip axis, they present only one hot spot at the vertex along the polarization direction. To create a structure with two hot spots, which is desired in bio-sensing applications, two nano-triangles can be put back-to-back. Therefore, a nano-diamond particle is obtained which exhibits two hot spots and presents higher enhancements than nano-triangles for the same resonant wavelength. The main drawback of the nano-diamonds is the °uctuation in their physical size-plasmon spectrum relationships, due to a high level of singularity as the result of their four sharp tip points. The proposed nano-sinusoid overcomes this disadvantage while maintaining the bene¯ts of having two hot spots and high enhancement

Wireless sensor networks for in-situ image validation for water and nutrient management

Water and Nitrogen (N) are critical inputs for crop production. Remote sensing data collected from multiple scales, including ground-based, aerial, and satellite, can be used for the formulation of an efficient and cost effective algorithm for the detection of N and water stress. Formulation and validation of such techniques require continuous acquisition of ground based spectral data over the canopy enabling field measurements to coincide exactly with aerial and satellite observations. In this context, a wireless sensor in situ network was developed and this paper describes the results of the first phase of the experiment along with the details of sensor development and instrumentation set up. The sensor network was established based on different spatial sampling strategies and each sensor collected spectral data in seven narrow wavebands (470, 550, 670, 700, 720, 750, 790 nm) critical for monitoring crop growth. Spectral measurements recorded at required intervals (up to 30 seconds) were relayed through a multi-hop wireless network to a base computer at the field site. These data were then accessed by the remote sensing centre computing system through broad band internet. Comparison of the data from the WSN and an industry standard ground based hyperspectral radiometer indicated that there were no significant differences in the spectral measurements for all the wavebands except for 790nm. Combining sensor and wireless technologies provides a robust means of aerial and satellite data calibration and an enhanced understanding of issues of variations in the scale for the effective water and nutrient management in wheat.<br /

RF techniques for lowering the actuation voltage of RF MEMS shunt capacitor switch for C-K band

Increasing the capacitance ratio in RF MEMS shunt capacitive switch will increase its RF performance but also raise its actuation voltage. To improve the RF performance of the switch without increasing its capacitance ratio, this paper explores two methods: reducing the LC resonance from the mm-wave into the X-band by using an inductive bridge, and using two short high impedance transmission lines at both ends of the CPW line. Accordingly, this paper presents the design and simulation of an electro-static low actuation voltage and a very high isolation multipurpose switch with a very large bandwidth. The simulation results are presented and discussed

A study on automatic recognition of road signs

    No full text
An automatic road sign recognition system identifies road signs from within images captured by an imaging sensor on-board of a vehicle, and assists the driver to properly operate the vehicle. Most existing systems include a detection phase and a classification phase. This paper classifies the methods applied to road sign recognition into three groups: colour-based, shape-based, and others. In this study, the issues associated with automatic road sign recognition are addressed, the popular existing methods developed to tackle the road sign recognition problem are reviewed, and a comparison of the features of these methods is given

Energy efficiency methods in electrified railways based on recovery of regenerated power

Various attempts have been made to minimise energy consumption of rail vehicles by means of regenerative power from electric braking of traction motors. This paper describes energy efficiency methods in electrified railways based on recovery of energy. Direct recovery methods that return regenerative power to electrified networks, and recovery methods based on energy storage systems are elaborated. The benefits of developing recovery methods and advantages of energy storage systems are discussed

This paper proposes a novel sinusoidal shape nano-particle employed in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) devices. Numerical modeling demonstrates advantages offered by the proposed nano-sinusoid on LSPR enhancement against other nano-particles including noble nano-triangles and nano-diamonds. Although nano-triangles exhibit high concentration of the electric field near their tips, when illuminated with a light polarized along the tip axis, they present only one hot spot at the vertex along the polarization direction. To create a structure with two hot spots, which is desired in bio-sensing applications, two nano-triangles can be put back-to-back. Therefore, a nano-diamond particle is obtained which exhibits two hot spots and presents higher enhancements than nano-triangles for the same resonant wavelength. The main drawback of the nano-diamonds is the fluctuation in their physical size-plasmon spectrum relationships, due to a high level of singularity as the result for their four sharp tip points. The proposed nano-sinusoid overcomes this disadvantage while maintaining the benefits of having two hot spots and high enhancement
