Goldius angusticalix Sp. Nov. (Trilobita, Scutelluidae) from the Couvin Formation (Middle Devonian) in Belgium, with a preliminary list of Scutelluid Species from the Ardennes

Get PDF
Scutelluids are rare trilobites in the Devonian of the Ardennes (Belgium, France). Goldius angusticalix sp. nov. and Scabriscutellum sp. A are recorded from the Couvin Formation (lower Eifelian) in Nismes, Belgium. An overview is given of the regional distribution in the Eifelian of Goldius de Koninck (= Brontes Goldfuss; Bronteus Goldfuss; Goldfussia Bronn; Calycoscutellum Archinal), Scabriscutellum Richter & Richter, Septimopeltis Pribyl & Vanek and Scutellum Pusch. Additionally, analogies between the early Eifelian trilobite faunas of Nismes and Üxheim (Germany) are briefly discussed

Late Devonian (Frasnian) Asteropygine trilobites from the Frasnes area, southern border of Dinant synclinorium, Belgium

Get PDF
The Frasnian representatives of Asteropyginae in the Frasnes area (south Belgium) have long been relatively well-documented when compared to other trilobites in the Devonian of the Ardennes (Belgium, northern France). However, examination of the type material and new collecting by the authors indicate that a taxonomic review has become necessary. Two new species of Bradocryphaeus are recorded, B. vanherlei sp. nov. and B. neptuni sp. nov.; one additional species, B. sp. 20, is known from the pygidium alone. New material is recorded of Bradocryphaeus maillieuxi (Richter & Richter), which has hitherto been scantily illustrated in the literature. The cephalon of Heliopyge helios (Richter & Richter) is redescribed on the basis of new specimens and its holotype pygidium refigured

A revision of Devonian trilobites from Belgium - Part 1 The Genera Cornuproetus and Radiaspis

Get PDF
Belgian Devonian trilobites have long been known, although they remain comparatively poorly documented. A revision of the obsolete nomenclature seems long overdue, and added to that, critical evaluations of listings of trilobite taxa by MAILLIEUX over sixty years ago are called for. The present note is the first part in a revision of Devonian trilobites from Belgium, and comprises data on a section near Jemelle (Luxembourg, Belgium) that yielded the new material. It briefly discusses correlations of Middle Devonian (Eifelian) successions of the Ardennes and Eifel (Germany), and describes two taxa (Cornuproetus (Cornuproetus) cornutus cornutus and Radiaspis comes) from Jemelle

The rise and fall of Late Devonian (Frasnian) trilobites from Belgium: taxonomy, biostratigraphy and events

Trilobites are recorded from Frasnian strata in Belgium on the basis of old museum collections and contemporary fieldwork. Of the four third-order Transgressive-Regressive (T-R) cycles recognised here in the latest Givetian to late Frasnian, the last three are each associated with a version of a largely coherent, acastid–scutelluid dominated trilobite fauna. Accents of this “base” fauna encompassed probably primarily allochthonous elements. The timing and effects of the late Frasnian Kellwasser Event in Belgium differ according to fossil group and their position along the ramp. The new data from this study are suggestive of distinct extinction patterns for the trilobite associations of the reefal environments and lateral facies. No evidence was identified for a direct impact of the Kellwasser levels on the Belgian trilobite fauna, although not a single trilobite is known with certainty from strata above the base of the Lower Kellwasser level. Comparisons to trilobite faunas from other countries are suggestive of open, shallow-water migration routes between southern Laurussia and peri-Gondwana during most of the Frasnian. New taxa are Bradocryphaeus echinatus sp. nov., Magreanops renateae gen. & sp. nov. (both Moulin Liénaux Formation), Bradocryphaeus laomedeia sp. nov., Bradocryphaeus neptuni hottonensis ssp. nov., Cyphaspis koimeterionensis sp. nov. (all Grands Breux Formation), Magreanops monachus gen. & sp. nov., Quadratispina excelsa sp. nov. (both Bovesse Formation) and Pterocoryphe platymarginata sp. nov. (Champ Broquet Formation). Magreanops gen. nov. represents the first and only known big-eyed phacopid from Frasnian strata worldwide, breaching the established latest Givetian to late Famennian gap of this group

Kettneraspis, Radiaspis and Ceratarges (Trilobita) from the Middle Devonian of the Rochefort area (Ardennes, Belgium)

The Middle Eifelian trilobite fauna of the Belgian Ardennes shows close affinities with that of the German Eifel. Two trilobite taxa are recorded from Middle Eifelian strata near the town of Jemelle, on the southern border of the Dinant Synclinorium, Belgium. Kettneraspis bayarti sp. nov. is closely related to Kettneraspis elliptica (Burmeister) from the Middle Eifelian of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Ceratarges cf. armatus (Goldfuss) is also described on the basis of a single pygidium. The odontopleurid Charybdaspis Basse is considered a junior subjective synonym of Radiaspis Richter & Richter. The lichid Rhenarges Basse is briefly discussed and regarded as a junior subjective synonym of Akantharges Phleger
