    Kaon mixing and the charm mass

    We study contributions to the Delta S=2 weak Chiral Lagrangian producing K0-K0bar mixing which are not enhanced by the charm mass. For the real part, these contributions turn out to be related to the box diagram with up quarks but, unlike in perturbation theory, they do not vanish in the limit m_u->0. They increase the leading contribution to the K_L-K_S mass difference by ~10%. This means that short distances amount to (90+-15)% of this mass difference. For the imaginary part, we find a correction to the lambda_c^2 m_c^2 term of -5% from the integration of charm, which is a small contribution to epsilon_K.     We calculate a number of observables related to particle-antiparticle mixing in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT). The resulting effective Hamiltonian for Delta F=2 transitions agrees with the one of Hubisz et al., but our phenomenological analysis goes far beyond the one of these authors. In particular, we point out that the presence of mirror fermions with new flavour and CP-violating interactions allows to remove the possible Standard Model (SM) discrepancy between the CP asymmetry S_{psi K_S} and large values of |V_ub| and to obtain for the mass difference Delta M_s < (Delta M_s)_SM as suggested by the recent result by the CDF collaboration. We also identify a scenario in which simultaneously significant enhancements of the CP asymmetries S_{phi psi} and A_SL^q relative to the SM are possible, while satisfying all existing constraints, in particular from the B -> X_s gamma decay and A_CP(B -> X_s gamma) that are presented in the LHT model here for the first time. In another scenario the second, non-SM, value for the angle gamma=-(109+-6) from tree level decays, although unlikely, can be made consistent with all existing data with the help of mirror fermions. We present a number of correlations between the observables in question and study the implications of our results for the mass spectrum and the weak mixing matrix of mirror fermions. In the most interesting scenarios, the latter one turns out to have a hierarchical structure that differs significantly from the CKM one.Comment: 51 pages, 20 figures, 1 table.     The BKB_K Kaon Parameter in the Chiral Limit

    We introduce four-point functions in the hadronic ladder resummation approach to large NcN_c QCD Green functions. We determine the relevant one to calculate the BKB_K kaon parameter in the chiral limit. This four-point function contains both the large momenta QCD OPE and the small momenta ChPT at NLO limits, analytically. We get B^Kχ=0.38±0.15\hat B_K^\chi = 0.38 \pm 0.15. We also give the ChPT result at NLO for the relevant four-point function to calculate BKB_K outside the chiral limit, while the leading QCD OPE is the same as the chiral limit one.Comment: 17 page

    The UTfit Collaboration Report on the Status of the Unitarity Triangle beyond the Standard Model I. Model-independent Analysis and Minimal Flavour Violation

    Starting from a (new physics independent) tree level determination of rhobar and etabar, we perform the Unitarity Triangle analysis in general extensions of the Standard Model with arbitrary new physics contributions to loop-mediated processes. Using a simple parameterization, we determine the allowed ranges of non-standard contributions to |Delta F|=2 processes. Remarkably, the recent measurements from B factories allow us to determine with good precision the shape of the Unitarity Triangle even in the presence of new physics, and to derive stringent constraints on non-standard contributions to |Delta F|=2 processes. Since the present experimental constraints favour models with Minimal Flavour Violation, we present the determination of the Universal Unitarity Triangle that can be defined in this class of extensions of the Standard Model. Finally, we perform a combined fit of the Unitarity Triangle and of new physics contributions in Minimal Flavour Violation, reaching a sensitivity to a new physics scale of about 5 TeV. We also extrapolate all these analyses into a "year 2010" scenario for experimental and theoretical inputs in the flavour sector.     SU(5) Unified Theories from Intersecting Branes

    We discuss the first string theory examples of three generation non-supersymmetric SU(5) and {\em flipped} SU(5) GUTS, which break to the Standard model at low energy, without extra matter and/or gauge group factors. Our GUT examples are based on IIA Z3Z_3 orientifolds with D6-branes intersecting at non-trivial angles. These theories necessarily satisfy RR tadpoles and are free of NSNS tadpoles as the complex structure moduli are frozen (even though a dilaton tadpole remains) to discrete values. We identify appropriately the bifundamental Higgses responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. In this way, the neutrino see-saw mechanism get nicely realized in these constructions. Moreover, as baryon number is not a gauged symmetry gauge mediated dimension six operators do contribute to proton decay; however proton lifetime may be safely enhanced by appropriately choosing a high GUT scale. An accompanying natural doublet-triplet splitting guarantees the suppression of scalar mediated proton decay modes and the stability of triplet scalar masses against higher dimensional non-renormalizable operators.Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures; no changes, one comment added in the introductio
