Measurement of molecular orientation in thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers
Procedures for obtaining molecular orientational parameters from wide angle X-ray scattering patterns of samples of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers are presented. The methods described are applied to an extrusion-aligned sample of a random copolyester of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and p-acetoxybenzoic acid. Values of the orientational parameters are obtained from both the interchain and intrachain maxima in the scattering pattern. The differences in the values so derived suggest some level of local rotational correlatio

Diffraction from thermotropic copolyester molecules
Analytical expressions for the meridional scattering from highly oriented random copolyesters are presented. These procedures are utilised in developing the relationship of the features in the diffraction pattern to compositions and relative lengths of the constituent monomer units. The difference between the scattering patterns for random and block copolymers are discussed. The theory is applied to an example of a liquid crystal froming random copolyester

The determination of molecular orientation in uniaxially compressed PMMA by X-ray scattering
A procedure is presented for obtaining full molecular orientation information from wide angle X-ray scattering patterns of deformed non-crystalline polymers. The method is based on the analysis of experimental and calculated scattering patterns into their spherical harmonics. The results obtained for PMMA are compared with values predicted by the pseudo affine and affine deformation schemes

Experimental separation of the coherent component of X-ray scattering prior to RDF analysis of non-crystalline polymers
An experimental method is described which enables the inelastically scattered X-ray component to be removed from diffractometer data prior to radial density function analysis. At each scattering angle an energy spectrum is generated from a Si(Li) detector combined with a multi-channel analyser from which the coherently scattered component is separated. The data obtained from organic polymers has an improved signal/noise ratio at high values of scattering angle, and a commensurate enhancement of resolution of the RDF at low r is demonstrated for the case of PMMA (ICI `Perspex'). The method obviates the need for the complicated correction for multiple scattering

The effect of annealing on the local structure of glassy polycarbonate
Annealing of polycarbonate glasses at temperatures belowTg leads to an increase in yield stress and a drop in the impact strength. Although such behaviour may be related to the corresponding reduction in free volume upon annealing, variations in the wide-angle X-ray scattering curves indicate some modification to the local structure. The area of an intrachain peak at s ∼ 0.7 Å−1 is monitored with respect to annealing temperature and time. It is proposed that the variations may be described by an increasing level of interlocking or (nesting) between neighbouring chain segments, a process which is a natural consequence of the molecular shape of polycarbonate

Conformational analysis of oriented non-crystalline polymers using wide angle X-ray scattering
A procedure is presented for obtaining conformational parameters from oriented but non-crystalline polymers. This is achieved by comparison of the experimental wide angle X-ray scattering with that calculated from models but in such a way that foreknowledge of the orientation distribution function is not required. X-ray scattering intensity values for glassy isotactic poly(methylmethacrylate) are analysed by these techniques. The method could be usefully applied to other oriented molecular systems such as liquid crystalline materials

Biaxial optical properties of thermotropic random copolyesters
The optical microstructures of thin sections of two liquid crystalline polymers are examined in the polarizing microscope. The polymers are random copolyesters based on hydroxybenzoic and hydroxynaphthoic acids (B-N), and hydroxybenzoic acid and ethylene terephthalate (B-ET). Sections cut from oriented samples, so as to include the extrusion direction, show microstructures in which there is no apparent preferred orientation of the axes describing the local optical anisotropy. The absence of preferred orientation in the microstructure, despite marked axial alignment of molecular chain segments as demonstrated by X-Ray diffraction, is interpreted in terms of the polymer having biaxial optical properties. The implication of optical biaxiality is that, although the mesophases are nematic, the orientation of the molecules is correlated about three (orthogonal) axes over distances greater than a micron. The structure is classified as a multiaxial nematic
