XMM-Newton Detection of Hot Gas in the Eskimo Nebula: Shocked Stellar Wind or Collimated Outflows?
The Eskimo Nebula (NGC 2392) is a double-shell planetary nebula (PN) known
for the exceptionally large expansion velocity of its inner shell, ~90 km/s,
and the existence of a fast bipolar outflow with a line-of-sight expansion
velocity approaching 200 km/s. We have obtained XMM-Newton observations of the
Eskimo and detected diffuse X-ray emission within its inner shell. The X-ray
spectra suggest thin plasma emission with a temperature of ~2x10^6 K and an
X-ray luminosity of L_X = (2.6+/-1.0)x10^31 (d/1150 pc)^2 ergs/s, where d is
the distance in parsecs. The diffuse X-ray emission shows noticeably different
spatial distributions between the 0.2-0.65 keV and 0.65-2.0 keV bands.
High-resolution X-ray images of the Eskimo are needed to determine whether its
diffuse X-ray emission originates from shocked fast wind or bipolar outflows.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter
Optimal paths on the road network as directed polymers
We analyze the statistics of the shortest and fastest paths on the road
network between randomly sampled end points. To a good approximation, these
optimal paths are found to be directed in that their lengths (at large scales)
are linearly proportional to the absolute distance between them. This motivates
comparisons to universal features of directed polymers in random media. There
are similarities in scalings of fluctuations in length/time and transverse
wanderings, but also important distinctions in the scaling exponents, likely
due to long-range correlations in geographic and man-made features. At short
scales the optimal paths are not directed due to circuitous excursions governed
by a fat-tailed (power-law) probability distribution.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Coherent control of atomic spin currents in a double well
We propose an experimental feasible method for controlling the atomic
currents of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well by
applying an external field to the atoms in one of the potential wells. We study
the ground-state properties of the system and show that the directions of spin
currents and net-particle tunneling can be manipulated by adiabatically varying
the coupling strength between the atoms and the field. This system can be used
for studying spin and tunneling phenomena across a wide range of interaction
parameters. In addition, spin-squeezed states can be generated. It is useful
for quantum information processing and quantum metrology.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, minor revisio
Canonical quantization of the WZW model with defects and Chern-Simons theory
We perform canonical quantization of the WZW model with defects and
permutation branes. We establish symplectomorphism between phase space of WZW
model with defects on cylinder and phase space of Chern-Simons theory on
annulus times with Wilson lines, and between phase space of WZW model
with defects on strip and Chern-Simons theory on disc times with
Wilson lines. We obtained also symplectomorphism between phase space of the
-fold product of the WZW model with boundary conditions specified by
permutation branes, and phase space of Chern-Simons theory on sphere with
holes and two Wilson lines.Comment: 26 pages, minor corrections don
