Quantifying Cross-scatter Contamination in Biplane Fluoroscopy Motion Analysis Systems
Biplane fluoroscopy is used for dynamic in vivo three-dimensional motion analysis of various joints of the body. Cross-scatter between the two fluoroscopy systems may limit tracking accuracy. This study measured the magnitude and effects of cross-scatter in biplane fluoroscopic images. Four cylindrical phantoms of 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-in. diameter were imaged at varying kVp levels to determine the cross-scatter fraction and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Monte Carlo simulations quantified the effect of the gantry angle on the cross-scatter fraction. A cadaver foot with implanted beads was also imaged. The effect of cross-scatter on marker-based tracking accuracy was investigated. Results demonstrated that the cross-scatter fraction varied from 0.15 for the 4-in. cylinder to 0.89 for the 10-in. cylinder when averaged across kVp. The average change in CNR due to cross-scatter ranged from 5% to 36% CNR decreases for the 4- and 10-in. cylinders, respectively. In simulations, the cross-scatter fraction increased with the gantry angle for the 8- and 10-in. cylinders. Cross-scatter significantly increased static-tracking error by 15%, 25%, and 38% for the 6-, 8-, and 10-in. phantoms, respectively, with no significant effect for the foot specimen. The results demonstrated submillimeter marker-based tracking for a range of phantom sizes, despite cross-scatter degradation
Characterizations of safety in hybrid inclusions via barrier functions
This paper investigates characterizations of safety in terms of barrier functions for hybrid systems modeled by hybrid inclusions. After introducing an adequate definition of safety for hybrid inclusions, sufficient conditions using continuously differentiable as well as lower semicontinuous barrier functions are proposed. Furthermore, the lack of existence of autonomous and continuous barrier functions certifying safety, guides us to propose, inspired by converse Lyapunov theorems for only stability, nonautonomous barrier functions and conditions that are shown to be both necessary as well as sufficient, provided that mild regularity conditions on the system's dynamics holds
Biplane Fluoroscopy for Hindfoot Motion Analysis during Gait: A Model-based Evaluation
The purpose of this study was to quantify the accuracy and precision of a biplane fluoroscopy system for model-based tracking of in vivo hindfoot motion during over-ground gait. Gait was simulated by manually manipulating a cadaver foot specimen through a biplane fluoroscopy system attached to a walkway. Three 1.6-mm diameter steel beads were implanted into the specimen to provide marker-based tracking measurements for comparison to model-based tracking. A CT scan was acquired to define a gold standard of implanted bead positions and to create 3D models for model-based tracking. Static and dynamic trials manipulating the specimen through the capture volume were performed. Marker-based tracking error was calculated relative to the gold standard implanted bead positions. The bias, precision, and root-mean-squared (RMS) error of model-based tracking was calculated relative to the marker-based measurements. The overall RMS error of the model-based tracking method averaged 0.43 ± 0.22 mm and 0.66 ± 0.43° for static and 0.59 ± 0.10 mm and 0.71 ± 0.12° for dynamic trials. The model-based tracking approach represents a non-invasive technique for accurately measuring dynamic hindfoot joint motion during in vivo, weight bearing conditions. The model-based tracking method is recommended for application on the basis of the study results
A Multistakeholder Approach Towards Evaluating AI Transparency Mechanisms
Given that there are a variety of stakeholders involved in, and affected by,
decisions from machine learning (ML) models, it is important to consider that
different stakeholders have different transparency needs. Previous work found
that the majority of deployed transparency mechanisms primarily serve technical
stakeholders. In our work, we want to investigate how well transparency
mechanisms might work in practice for a more diverse set of stakeholders by
conducting a large-scale, mixed-methods user study across a range of
organizations, within a particular industry such as health care, criminal
justice, or content moderation. In this paper, we outline the setup for our

Inevitability of Phase-locking in a Charge Pump Phase Lock Loop using Deductive Verification
Phase-locking in a charge pump (CP) phase lock loop (PLL) is said to be inevitable if all possible states of the CP PLL eventually converge to the equilibrium, where the input and output phases are in lock and the node voltages vanish. We verify this property for a CP PLL using deductive verification. We split this complex property into two sub-properties defined in two disjoint subsets of the state space. We deductively verify the first property using multiple Lyapunov certificates for hybrid systems, and use the Escape certificate for the verification of the second property. Construction of deductive certificates involves positivity check of polynomial inequalities (which is an NP-Hard problem), so we use the sound but incomplete Sum of Squares (SOS) relaxation algorithm to provide a numerical solution
An Axiomatic Approach to Liveness for Differential Equations
This paper presents an approach for deductive liveness verification for
ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with differential dynamic logic.
Numerous subtleties complicate the generalization of well-known discrete
liveness verification techniques, such as loop variants, to the continuous
setting. For example, ODE solutions may blow up in finite time or their
progress towards the goal may converge to zero. Our approach handles these
subtleties by successively refining ODE liveness properties using ODE
invariance properties which have a well-understood deductive proof theory. This
approach is widely applicable: we survey several liveness arguments in the
literature and derive them all as special instances of our axiomatic refinement
approach. We also correct several soundness errors in the surveyed arguments,
which further highlights the subtlety of ODE liveness reasoning and the utility
of our deductive approach. The library of common refinement steps identified
through our approach enables both the sound development and justification of
