Phases of two coupled Luttinger liquids
A model of two interacting one--dimensional fermion systems (``Luttinger
liquids'') coupled by single--particle hopping is investigated. Bosonization
allows a number of exact statements to be made. In particular, for forward
scattering only, the model contains two massless boson sectors and an Ising
type critical sector. For general interactions, there is a spin excitation gap
and either s-- or d--type pairing fluctuations dominate. It is shown that the
same behavior is also found for strong interactions. A possible scenario for
the crossover to a Fermi liquid in a many chain system is discussed.Comment: revised version, some changes, 11 pages, no figures, RexTeX3.
Charge gap in the one--dimensional dimerized Hubbard model at quarter-filling
We propose a quantitative estimate of the charge gap that opens in the
one-dimensional dimerized Hubbard model at quarter-filling due to dimerization,
which makes the system effectively half--filled, and to repulsion, which
induces umklapp scattering processes. Our estimate is expected to be valid for
any value of the repulsion and of the parameter describing the dimerization. It
is based on analytical results obtained in various limits (weak coupling,
strong coupling, large dimerization) and on numerical results obtained by exact
diagonalization of small clusters. We consider two models of dimerization:
alternating hopping integrals and alternating on--site energies. The former
should be appropriate for the Bechgaard salts, the latter for compounds where
the stacks are made of alternating and molecules. % and ( denotes , , ...).Comment: 33 pages, RevTeX 3.0, figures on reques
Energy cost associated with vortex crossing in superconductors
Starting from the Ginzburg-Landau free energy of a type II superconductor in
a magnetic field we estimate the energy associated with two vortices crossing.
The calculations are performed by assuming that we are in a part of the phase
diagram where the lowest Landau level approximation is valid. We consider only
two vortices but with two markedly different sets of boundary conditions: on a
sphere and on a plane with quasi-periodic boundary conditions. We find that the
answers are very similar suggesting that the energy is localised to the
crossing point. The crossing energy is found to be field and temperature
dependent -- with a value at the experimentally measured melting line of
, where is the Lindemann
melting criterion parameter. The crossing energy is then used with an extension
of the Marchetti, Nelson and Cates hydrodynamic theory to suggest an
explanation of the recent transport experiments of Safar {{\em et al.}\ }.Comment: 15 pages, RevTex v3.0, followed by 5 postscript figure
Fermi Liquid Damping and NMR Relaxation in Superconductors
Electron collisions for a two dimensional Fermi liquid (FL) are shown to give
a quasiparticle damping with interesting frequency and temperature variations
in the BCS superconducting state. The spin susceptibility which determines the
structure of the damping is analyzed in the normal state for a Hubbard model
with a constant on--site Coulomb repulsion. This is then generalized to the
superconducting state by including coherence factors and self energy and vertex
corrections. Calculations of the NMR relaxation rate reveal that the FL damping
structure can reduce the Hebel--Slichter peak, in agreement with data on the
organic superconductor (MDT-TTF)AuI. However, the strongly suppressed
FL damping in the superconducting state does not eliminate the Hebel-Slichter
peak, and thus suggests that other mechanisms are needed to explain the NMR
data on (TMTSF)ClO, the BEDT organic compounds, and cuprate
superconductors. Predictions of the temperature variation of the damping and
the spin response are given over a wide frequency range as a guide to
experimental probes of the symmetry of the superconducting pairs.Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX 3.0, 9 figures in uuencoded postscrip
Vortex Line Fluctuations in Model High Temperature Superconductors
We carry out Monte Carlo simulations of the uniformly frustrated 3d XY model
as a model for vortex line fluctuations in a high Tc superconductor. A density
of vortex lines of f=1/25 is considered. We find two sharp phase transitions.
The low T phase is an ordered vortex line lattice. The high T normal phase is a
vortex line liquid with much entangling, cutting, and loop excitations. An
intermediate phase is found which is characterized as a vortex line liquid of
disentangled lines. In this phase, the system displays superconducting
properties in the direction parallel to the magnetic field, but normal behavior
in planes perpendicular to the magnetic field.Comment: 38 pages, LaTeX 15 figures (upon request to
