    Beyond the Kannisto-Thatcher Database on Old Age Mortality: an assessment of data quality at advanced ages

    The old age population in developed countries has been increasing remarkably, yet internationally comparable high quality data on oldest-old mortality remain relatively scarce. The Kannisto-Thatcher Old Age Mortality Database (KTD) is a unique source providing uniformly recalculated old-age mortality data for 35 countries. Our study addresses a number of data quality issues relevant to population and death statistics at the most advanced ages. Following previous studies by Väinö Kannisto, we apply the same set of measures. This allows us to identify dubious or irregular mortality patterns. Deviations such as this often suggest that the data quality has serious problems. We update previously published findings by extending the analyses made so far to thirty five countries and by adding data on longer historical periods. In addition, we propose a systematic classification of country- and period-specific data, thus simultaneously accounting for each indicator of data quality. We apply conventional procedures of hierarchical cluster analysis to distinguish four data quality clusters (best data quality, acceptable data quality, conditionally acceptable quality, and weak quality). We show that the reliability of old-age mortality estimates has been improving in time. However, the mortality indicators for the most advanced ages of a number of countries, such as Chile, Canada, and the USA should be treated with caution even for the most recent decade. Canada, Ireland, Finland, Lithuania, New Zealand (Non-Maori), Norway, Portugal, Spain, and the USA have particular problems in their historical data series. After having compared the KTD with official data, we conclude that the methods used for extinct and almost extinct generations produce more accurate population estimates than those published by national statistical offices.     Weak radiative corrections to the Drell-Yan process for large invariant mass of a dilepton pair

    The weak radiative corrections to the Drell-Yan process above the Z-peak have been studied. The compact asymptotic expression for the two heavy boson exchange - one of the significant contributions to the investigated process - has been obtained, the results expand in the powers of the Sudakov electroweak logarithms. At the quark level we compare the weak radiative corrections to the total cross section and forward-backward asymmetry with the existing results and achieve a rather good coincidence at \sqrt{s}>= 0.5 TeV. The numerical analysis has been performed in the high energy region corresponding to the future experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). To simulate the detector acceptance we used the standard CMS detector cuts. It was shown that double Sudakov logarithms of the WW boxes are the dominant contributions in hadronic cross section. The considered radiative corrections are significant at high dilepton mass M and change the dilepton mass distribution up to ~+3(-12)% at the LHC energies and M=1(5) TeV.Comment: Changed content; 13 pp, 4 fig, 1 tabl

    Collision Thermalization of Nucleons in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

    We consider a possible mechanism of thermalization of nucleons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our model belongs, to a certain degree, to the transport ones; we investigate the evolution of the system created in nucleus-nucleus collision, but we parametrize this development by the number of collisions of every particle during evolution rather than by the time variable. We based on the assumption that the nucleon momentum transfer after several nucleon-nucleon (-hadron) elastic and inelastic collisions becomes a random quantity driven by a proper distribution. This randomization results in a smearing of the nucleon momenta about their initial values and, as a consequence, in their partial isotropization and thermalization. The trial evaluation is made in the framework of a toy model. We show that the proposed scheme can be used for extraction of the physical information from experimental data on nucleon rapidity distribution.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

    Atom-optics hologram in the time domain

    The temporal evolution of an atomic wave packet interacting with object and reference electromagnetic waves is investigated beyond the weak perturbation of the initial state. It is shown that the diffraction of an ultracold atomic beam by the inhomogeneous laser field can be interpreted as if the beam passes through a three-dimensional hologram, whose thickness is proportional to the interaction time. It is found that the diffraction efficiency of such a hologram may reach 100% and is determined by the duration of laser pulses. On this basis a method for reconstruction of the object image with matter waves is offered.Comment: RevTeX, 13 pages, 8 figures; minor grammatical change

    Inverse bremsstrahlung contributions to Drell-Yan like processes

    The contribution of the sub-process γqql1lˉ2\gamma q \to q' l_1\bar{l}_2 in hadron-hadron interactions is considered. It is a part of one-loop electroweak radiative corrections for the Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs at hadron colliders. It is shown that this contribution should be taken into account aiming at the 1% accuracy of the Drell-Yan process theoretical description. Both the neutral and charged current cases are evaluated.     One-loop corrections to the Drell-Yan process in SANC (I). The charged current case

    Radiative corrections to the charged current Drell-Yan processes are revisited. Complete one-loop electroweak corrections are calculated within the automatic SANC system.
